  • In this study, the climatological spatio-temporal variation of strong wind and gust wind in Korea during the period from 1993 to 2018 was analyzed using daily maximum wind speed and daily maximum instantaneous wind speed data recorded at 61 observations. Strong wind and gust wind were defined as 14 m s-1 and 20 m s-1, which are the same as the KMA's criteria of special weather report. The frequency of strong wind and gust wind occurrence was divided into regions with the higher 25 percent (Group A) and the lower 75 percent (Group B). The annual frequency of strong wind and gust wind occurrence tended to be decreased in most parts of the Korean peninsula. In Group A with stations located at coastal region, strong wind and gust wind occurred most frequently in winter with higher frequency at 1200~1600 LST and 2300~2400 LST due to influence of East Asian winter monsoon. In addition, a marked decreasing trend throughout the four seasons was shown at Daegwallyeong, Gunsan and Wando observations. In contrast, it can be found in Group B that the monthly frequency of strong wind and wind gust occurrence was higher in August and September by effect of typhoon and hourly frequency was higher from 1200 LST to 1800 LST.

  • This paper uses a probability-based approach to study the spatial relationships between landslides and their causative factors in the Mingchukur area, Bostanlik districts of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The approach is based on digital databases and incorporates methods including probability analysis, spatial pattern analysis, and interactive mapping. First, an object-oriented conceptual model for describing landslide events is proposed, and a combined database of landslides and environmental factors is constructed by integrating various databases within a unifying conceptual framework. The frequency ratio probability model and landslide occurrence data are linked for interactive, spatial evaluation of the relationships between landslides and their causative factors. In total, 15 factors were analyzed, divided into topography, hydrology, and geology categories. All analyzed factors were also divided into numerical and categorical types. Numerical factors are continuous and were evaluated according to their $R^2$ values. A landslide susceptibility map was constructed based on conditioning factors and landslide occurrence data using the frequency ratio model. Finally, the map was validated and the accuracy showed the satisfactory value of 83.3%.

  • Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is performed to investigate suppressed wake transition and occurrence of lock-on in the wake of a circular cylinder disturbed by sinusoidal perturbation at the Reynolds number of 220 (A-mode instability regime). The sinusoidal perturbation, of which the frequency is near twice the natural shedding frequency, is superimposed on the free stream velocity. It is shown that the wake transition behind the circular cylinder can be suppressed due to the perturbation of the free stream velocity. This change causes a jump in the Strouhal number from the value corresponding to A-mode instability regime to the value corresponding to retarded wake transition regime (extrapolated from laminar shedding regime) in the Strouhal-Reynolds number relationship. As a result, vortex shedding frequency is locked on the perturbation frequency depending not on the natural shedding frequency but on the modified shedding frequency.

  • Increasing incidences of landslides in Korea are endangering life and damaging property. To ascertain the cause of the rapid increase in landslides in 2020, this study analyzed the correlation between frequency of their occurrence and persistence of rainfall. The study area comprised seven areas in Gangwon-do, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Chungcheongnam-do. The used rainfall factors were monthly rainfall in June, July, and August, rainfall during the summer (June-August), rainfall during the monsoon season, and number of precipitation days during the summer and during the monsoon season. The effect of these factors on landslides was identified by comparing them with the occurrence of landslides in the year of increased landslide occurrence in each area. The results confirmed that not only rainfall but also the number of precipitation days during the monsoon season affect the occurrence of landslides. The rapid increase in landslide occurrence in 2020 was attributed to increases in both the number of precipitation days during the monsoon season and rainfall during the monsoon season in 2020. These results are expected to be used as basic data for future landslide warning standards that consider the effect of the persistence of rainfall.

  • In this study, meteorological characteristics concerning the occurrence of fog are analyzed using 4-years $(2000\~2003)$ data at Chuncheon and the probability of prediction is investigated. From the analysis of meteorological characteristics, the fog at Chuncheon occurred before sunrise time and disappeared after that time and lasted for $2\~4$ hours. When fog occurred, on the whole, wind direction was blew the northerly and wind speed was below 2.1m/s. Especially, about $42\%$ of foggy day fell on the calm $(0\~0.2\;ms^{-1})$ conditions. The difference between air temperature and dew point temperature near the surface were mainly less than $2^{\circ}C$. For the lack of water surface temperature, the water surface temperature was calculated by using Water Quality River Reservoir System (WQRRS) and then it was used as the surface boundary condition of MM5. The numerical experiment was carried out for 2 days from 1300 LST on 14 October 2003 to 1300 LST on 16 October 2003 and fog was simulated at dawn on 15 and 16 October 2003. Simulated air temperature and dew point temperature indicate the similar tendency to observation and the simulated difference between air temperature and dew point temperature has also the similar tendency within $2^{\circ}C$. Thus, the occurrence of fog is well simulated in the terms of the difference between air temperature and dew point temperature. Horizontal distribution of the difference between air temperature and dew point temperature from the numerical experiment indicates occurrence, dissipation and lasting time of fog at Chuncheon. In Chuncheon, there is close correlation between the frequency of fog day and outflow from Soyang reservoir and high frequency of occurrence due to the difference between air and cold outlet water temperature.

  • The purpose of this research is to verify the hypothesis that the serious ness of barriers may have significant relevance to barrier components expressing the extent of barrier, e. g. their frequency of occurrence, effect of the barrier on the acquisition of information and on the research project and trend of the barrier. Major conclusions made in this research are summarized as follows: 1. Barriers that their frequency of occurrence are high, show high seriousness of barriers. This indicates that frequency of barriers affects the seriousness of barriers. 2. Barriers that their effects on the acquisition of information and on the research project are large, show high seriousness of barriers. This indicates that the effect of the barrier on the acquisition of information and on the research project affects the seriousness of barriers. 3. Barriers that their trends are increasing, show high seriousness of barriers. This indicates that the trend of the barrier affects the seriousness of barriers.

  • Recently, occurrence frequency of extreme events like flood and drought is increasing due to climate change by global warming. Especially, a drought is more severer than other hydrologic disasters because it causes continuous damage through long period. But, ironically, it is difficult to recognize the importance and seriousness of droughts because droughts occur for a long stretch of time unlike flood. So as to analyze occurrence of droughts and prepare a countermeasure, this study analyzed a meteorologic drought among many kinds of drought that it is closely related with precipitation. Palmer Drought Severity Index, Standard Precipitation and Effective Drought Index are computed using precipitation and temperature material observed by Korean Meteorological Administration. With the result of comparative analysis of computed drought indices, Effective Drought Index is selected to execute frequency analysis because it is accordant to past droughts and has advantage to compute daily indices. A Frequency analysis of Effective Drought Index was executed using boundary kernel density function. In the result of analysis, occurrence periods of spring showed about between 10 year and 20 year, it implies that droughts of spring are more frequent than other seasons. And severity and occurrence period of droughts varied in different regions as occurrence periods of the Youngnam region and the southern coast of Korea are relatively shorter than other regions.

  • This article identifies and addresses current limitations on the use of numerical models for validation and/or calibration of damage detection methodologies that are based on the analysis of the high frequency response of the structure to identify the occurrence of abrupt anomalies. Distributed-plasticity non-linear fiber-based models in combination with experimental data from a full-scale reinforced concrete column test are used to point out current modeling techniques limitations. It was found that the numerical model was capable of reproducing the global and local response of the structure at a wide range of inelastic demands, including the occurrences of rebar ruptures. However, when abrupt sudden damage occurs, like rebar fracture, a high frequency pulse is detected in the accelerations recorded in the structure that the numerical model is incapable of reproducing. Since the occurrence of such pulse is fundamental on the detection of damage, it is proposed to add this effect to the simulated response before it is used for validation purposes.

  • To estimate the probability of short term concentration of air pollution using long term arithmetic average concentration, the procedure was developed and added to Texas Climatological Model version 2. In the procedure, such statistical characteristics that frequency distribution of short term concentration may be approximated by a lognormal distribution, were applied. This procedure is capable of estimating not only highest concentration for a variety of averaging times but also concentrations for arbitrary occurrence frequency. Evaluation of the procedure with the results of short term concentrations calculated by Texas Episodic Model version 8 using the meteorological data and emission data in Seoul shows that the procedure estimates concentrations fairly well for wide range of percentiles.
