  • Spatial control of sound is essential to deliver better sound to the listener's position in space. As it can be experienced in many listening environments, the quality of sound can not be manifested over every position in a hall. This motivates us to control sound in a region we select. The primary focus of the developed method has to do with the brightness and contrast of acoustic image in space. In particular, the acoustic brightness control seeks a way to increase loudness of sound over a chosen area, and the contrast control aims to enhance loudness difference between two neighboring regions. This enables us to make two different kinds of zone - the zone of quiet and the zone of loud sound - at the same time. The other perspective of this study is on the direction of sound. It is shown that we can control the direction of perceived sound source by focusing acoustic energy in wavenumber domain. To begin with, the proposed approaches are formulated for pure-tone case. Then the control methods are extended to a more general case, where the excitation signal has broadband spectrum. In order to control the broadband signal in time domain, an inverse filter design problem is defined and solved in frequency domain. Numerical and experimental results obtained in various conditions certainly validate that the acoustic brightness, acoustic contrast, direction of wave front can be manipulated for some finite region in space and time.

  • This study analyzed users' emotional responses to VI character design through YouTube comments. The researchers applied text-mining to analyze 116,375 comments, focusing on terms related to character design and characteristics of VI. Using the BERT model in sentiment analysis, we classified comments into extremely negative, negative, neutral, positive, or extremely positive sentiments. Next, we conducted a co-occurrence frequency analysis on comments with extremely negative and extremely positive responses to examine the semantic relationships between character design and emotional characteristic terms. We also performed a content analysis of comments about Miquela and Shudu to analyze the perception differences regarding the two character designs. The results indicate that form elements (e.g., voice, face, and skin) and behavioral elements (e.g., speaking, interviewing, and reacting) are vital in eliciting users' emotional responses. Notably, in the negative responses, users focused on the humanization aspect of voice and the authenticity aspect of behavior in speaking, interviewing, and reacting. Furthermore, we found differences in the character design elements and characteristics that users expect based on the VI's field of activity. As a result, this study suggests applications to character design to accommodate these variations.

  • The profound impact of earthquakes on human lives and the built environment emphasizes the substantial human and economic losses result-ing from structural collapses. Many researchers in this field highlight the longstanding societal challenge posed by earthquakes and under-score the imperative to minimize such losses. Over the decades, researchers have dedicated efforts to seismic design, focusing on improv-ing structural performance to mitigate earthquake-induced damages. This has led to the development of various structural analysis methods. In this research, a specific RC frame structure (401 Bldg.) at Kyungpook National University that is designed for educational purposes, serves as a representative case. This research employs SAP 2000 for simulation, aiming to assess the structural performance under seismic condi-tions, focusing on evaluating the structural behavior under different column orientations. This research utilizes RSA (Response Spectrum Analysis) to comprehensively examine parameters of displacement, base shear force, base moment, joint radians, and story drift. Referring to the results from RSA, this research also assesses the structural performance using LTHA (Linear Time History Analysis) by conducting synthetic frequency domain and synthetic time domain analyses based on the seismic wave from the Kobe 1995 earthquake (Abeno). Based on the findings from the discussions, this research is expected to be a valuable reference for structural design within seismic resistance and the seismic reinforcement of existing RC frame structures.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the current use of university foodservice among Chinese international students in Korea, focusing on the relationship between the frequency of university foodservice use and their dietary life. Methods: An online survey was conducted on 452 Chinese international students from February 6 to 12, 2020. The respondents were classified into "the Low-frequency group" (< one time/week; n=144), "the Mid-frequency group" (one-two times/week; n=133), and "the High-frequency group" (≥ three times/week; n=175) according to their frequency of using university foodservice. The dietary life was compared among the three groups. Binominal logistic regression models were constructed to determine the associations between the frequency of university foodservice use and the changes in dietary life. Results: More than 2/3 (68.1%) of the respondents used the university foodservice at least once per week. Chinese international students who were males and Han Chinese people, lived on campus, had stayed longer in Korea, and had no cooking facilities tended to use the university foodservice more often. The level of satisfaction with the university foodservice was not high (3.52 out of 5-points). Only 20% ate meals three times per day, and only 22% ate breakfast almost every day. The frequencies of overeating and skipping meals increased after studying in Korea. The frequency of university foodservice use, along with the length of residence in Korea, was associated with these negative changes in dietary life. Overeating (OR=2.11) and skipping meals (OR=1.79) were more likely to increase after studying in Korea in the Mid-frequency group than in the High-frequency group. Conclusions: The frequency of university foodservice use was associated with the dietary life of Chinese international students in Korea. A high frequency (i.e. ≥ three times/week) of using university foodservice may positively affect the dietary life of Chinese international students in Korea.

  • In the life management safety evaluation of constructs base on a fracture mechanics, the size of defect is the very important parameter. ICFPD (Induced Current Focusing Potential Drop)technique has been developed for detecting and sizing of defects that exist not only on surface but also inside and interior of structural components. The principle of this technique is to induce a focusing current at an exploration region by a straight induction wire through which an alternating current (AC)flows that has constant amplitude and frequency. The potential distributed on the surface of metallic material is measured by potential pick-up pins that are settled on the probe. In this paper, this NDI technique was applied to the evaluation of surface cracks and blind cracks in plate specimens. The results of this study show that in the case of surface crack, the distribution of potential drop is varied with the inched angle of surface crack, and the potential drops in the crack region and the crack edge region are varied with the inclined angle and depth of crack. The distribution of potential drop for the blind crack is distingulished from that for the surface crack, and the potential drop in the crack region is varied with the depth of crack.

  • The objective of this study is to image the harmonic wave generated by contact acoustic nonlinearity in obliquely incident ultrasonic wave for early detection of closed cracks. A closed crack has been simulated by contacting two aluminum block specimens producing solid-solid contact interfaces and then acoustic nonlinearity has been imaged with contact pressure. Sampling phased array(SPA) and synthetic aperture focusing technique(SAFT) are used for imaging techniques. The amplitude of the fundamental frequency decreased with appling pressure. But, the amplitude of second harmonic increased with pressure and was a maximum amplitude at the simulation point of closed crack. Then, the amplitude of second harmonic decreased. As a result, harmonic imaging of contact acoustic nonlinearity is possible and it is expected to be apply for early detection of initial cracks.

  • A new smart antenna receiver which incorporates the spatial fourier Transform and the maximal ratio combining(MRC) is proposed. By adapting the spatial fourier transform, the proposed method could separate the received signal into several spatial frequency components which correspond to the arrival angles of signal components, which means the beam focusing. By using the MRC, the proposed method could achieve the maximum signal to noise ratio for the signal of interest. The proposed algorithm is integrated to the CDMA reverse link receiver and simulations are performed to confirm the performance. As a result, the beam focusing effect is confirmed and the performance gain with the proposed algorithm is comparable to ordinary smart antenna receivers. The simulations are performed over the additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) environments and the results are obtained for the beam focusing capability according to the angle of arrival of a signal and the bit error performance improvement according to the number of combining branches in the MRC.
