  • This paper presents a new method of designing room equalization filters using a warped common acoustical pole and zero (WCAPZ) modeling. The proposed method is capable of significantly reducing the order of the equalization filters without sacrificing the filter performance, especially, at low frequencies. Thus, the associated input-output delay is much smaller than the conventional block transform method while its computational complexity is comparable to it. The computational complexity also is still comparable to the conventional room equalization method, since the filter is implemented in the linear frequency domain after the pole-zero dewarping. Simulation results confirm that the use of the proposed algorithm significantly improves the room equalization over a range of low frequencies.

  • This paper proposes a distributed space-frequency block code (SFBC) for relay-assisted single carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). The proposed technique achieves spatial diversity gain over fast fading channels without the complexity of multiple antennas. The mobile equipment of the proposed system has a very simple transmitter structure with constant amplitude transmit sequences, which is desirable especially for uplink communications. In order to obtain spatial diversity, the transmit sequence of relay is efficiently generated in the time domain, which is equivalent to the SFBC. Further, efficient implementation of relay and destination structures is also presented. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed system significantly outperforms the distributed space-time block code (D-STBC) SC-FDE over fast fading channels.

  • Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) is widely used as a multiple access technique for next generation mobile communication systems, however, its main drawback is the high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). Thus for the uplink case where the transmit power is strictly limited due to the battery life of mobile units, single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) with low PAPR is preferred to OFDMA method. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the performance of SC-FDMA using frequency domain MMSE equalization. The proposed improved log-likelihood ratio (LLR) generation method exploits both the diversity characteristic of channels and the reciprocity that is obtained from the received signals. The complexity of the proposed method is analyzed and its performance gain is demonstrated via a set of computer simulations.

  • Unlike geostationary satellite communication systems, low-earth orbit(LEO) satellite communication systems move at relatively high speeds, and the angle with the ground device is not fixed and varies over a wide range. The propagation channel condition between satellites and ground nodes cannot be assumed line of sight(LOS) anymore. This paper analyzes the low-orbit multi-path fading satellite channel model that can occur in LEO satellite communication systems and Doppler frequency transition caused by high-speed maneuvering of LEO satellites and presents effective equalization techniques for OFDM and SC-FDE transmission methods suitable for multi-path frequency selective fading satellite channel models. In addition, this paper compares and analyzes the performance of OFDM and SC-FDE transmission methods in multipath fading LEO satellite channel environment using the proposed equalization techniques through simulations. Simulation results showed that SC-FDE outpeformed OFDM.

  • In [1], it has been shown that the energy spreading transform (EST) based iterative equalizer (IE) could enhance its performance by improving the reliability of the decision feedback symbols without the help of the complicated channel decoder. In the matched filter (MF) based IE proposed in [1], however, its feedforward filter (FFF) has been designed in the frequency domain while its feedback filter (FBF) in the time domain. So its complexity increases proportional to the channel memory length. To solve this problem, in this paper, both FFF and FBF are designed in the frequency domain. This enables the proposed frequency domain IE (FD-IE) to achieve the lower complexity over the conventional method in the highly dispersive channel. In addition, simulation results demonstrate that the BER performance of the proposed method is the same as the conventional.

  • By using an adaptive threshold and weight based on the wavelet transform and Haar transform, a novel image enhancement algorithm is proposed. First, a medical image was decomposed with wavelet transform and all high-frequency sub-images were decomposed with Haar transform. Secondly, noise in the frequency domain was reduced by the proposed soft-threshold method. Thirdly, high-frequency coefficients were enhanced by the proposed weight values in different sub-images. Then, the enhanced image was obtained through the inverse Haar transform and wavelet transform. But the pixel range of the enhanced image is narrower than a normal image. Lastly, the image's histogram was stretched by nonlinear histogram equalization. Experiments showed that the proposed method can be not only enhance an image's details but can also preserve its edge features effectively.

  • In this paper, we propose a new single carrier - frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) structure to cope with narrow band interference. In the conventional SC-FDE structure, when a high-power narrow band interference exists, channel estimation and data recovery is difficult. To relieve from this problem, this paper proposes a new SC-FDE frame structure to enable frequency-domain channel estimation in the environments that exist narrow band interference. Specifically, in the conventional method, the channel estimation is performed in time-domain first and from that, the frequency-domain channel is obtained by Fourier transform. In contrast, we proposed a new SC-FDE structure to enable frequency-domain channel estimation directly from received signals without time-domain channel estimation. The receiver performance improvement is verified through computer simulation. According to the results, the proposed technique can detect the signal with less than 2 dB loss compared with jammer-free environments, while the conventional method does not communicate with each other.
