  • The Kepler space mission provides quantitative and qualitative photometric time series of oscillating stars. It is possible to examine statistical study with seismic properties of solar-like stars. Global seismic properties - large frequency separation (${\Delta}{\nu}$), frequency of maximum power (${\nu}_{max}$) and amplitude of Gaussian envelope (A) widely have been used to determine empirical scaling relations for inferring the stellar physical quantities - mass, age and temperature. We aim to confirm whether width of Gaussian envelope on power excess (${\delta}{\nu}_{env}$) can be used with parameter of scaling relation before redgiant phase using Kepler data. Therefore we analyze the characteristics of ${\delta}{\nu}_{env}$ of 129 solar-like stars from main-sequence to subgiant. We have demonstrated that ${\delta}{\nu}_{env}$ has highly correlations with global parameters - ${\Delta}{\nu}$ and ${\nu}max$. We have also found the break of ${\delta}{\nu}_{env}-{\Delta}{\nu}$ and ${\nu}_{max}$ relations.

  • In this paper, we have described and simulated the effect analysis and correction of phase errors in the SAR rawdata induced by satellite attitude errors such as drift, jitter. This simulation is based on the FSA(Frequency Scaling Algorithm) for high resolution image formation of the Spotlight SAR. Phase errors produce the degradation of SAR image quality such as loss of resolution, geometric distortion, loss of contrast, spurious targets, and decrease in SNR. To resolve this problem, this paper presents method for correction of phase errors using the PGA(Phase Gradient Algorithm) in connection with the FSA. Several results of the phase errors correction are presented for Spotlight SAR rawdata.

  • This paper proposes an automatic tuning fuzzy controller for frequency control of a hydro power plant (HPP). The proposed automatic tuning fuzzy controller consists of fuzzy control part and scaling factor calculation part. Scaling factor tuning is based on the concept of conventional tuning rules for the PI controller. The proposed controller was evaluated by simulation. Good results have been obtained for the 5kW model HHP.

  • This paper proposes a new means of performance optimization for multimedia algorithm utilizing the Microscopic DVS (Dynamic Voltage Scaling). The Microscopic DVS technique controls the operating frequency and the supply voltage levels dynamically according to the processing requirement for each frame of multimedia data. The huffman decoding algorithm of MPEG-2 AAC audio decoder is optimized to maximize the power saving efficiency of Microscopic DVS technique. The experimental results show the reduction of computational complexity by more than 30% and the reduction of power consumption by more than 17% compared with those of the conventionally fast method.

  • Based on their shift and scale orthogonality properties, scaling and wavelet functions may be used as signaling functions having good frequency localization as determined by the fractional-out-of-band power (FOOBP). In this paper, application of Daubechies' wavelet and scaling functions as baseband signaling functions is described, with a focus on finding discretely realizable pulse-shaping transfer function circuits whose outputs approximate scaling and wavelet functions when driven by more conventional digital signaling waveforms. It is also shown that the inter-symbol interference (ISI) introduced by the approximation has negligible effect on the performance in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Moreover, the approximations are often more bandwidth efficient than the original wavelet functions. These waveforms thus illustrate an example solution of a tradeoff between residual ISI and bandwidth efficiency as a signal design problem.

  • In the real system environments, the performance of the application is not linearly proportional to the clock frequency of the microprocessor, in contrast to the general assumption of conventional dynamic voltage scaling. In this paper, we analytically model the relation between the performance of the application and the clock frequency of the microprocessor, and introduce the energy-optimal scheduling algorithm for a task set with distinct application characteristics. In addition, we present a theorem for the energy-optimal scheduling, which the derivative of the energy consumption with respect to the execution time should be the same for all the tasks. The proposed scheduling algorithm always generates the energy-optimal scaling factor thanks to the theorem for energy-optimal scheduling. We achieved about 7% additional energy reduction in the experiments using synthetic task sets.

  • An adaptive maximum power point tracking (MPPT) scheme employing a variable scaling factor is presented. A MPPT control loop was constructed analytically and the magnitude variation in the MPPT loop gain according to the operating point of the PV array was identified due to the nonlinear characteristics of the PV array output. To make the crossover frequency of the MPPT loop gain consistent, the variable scaling factor was determined using an approximate curve-fitted polynomial equation about linear expression of the error. Therefore, a desirable dynamic response and the stability of the MPPT scheme were maintained across the entire MPPT voltage range. The simulation and experimental results obtained from a 3 KW rated prototype demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed MPPT scheme.

  • Sudden enhancements of daytime NmF2 appeared in Anyang ionosonde data during summer seasons in 2006-2007. In order to investigate the causes of this unusual enhancement, we compared Anyang NmF2's with the total electron contents (GPS TECs) observed at Daejeon, and also with ionosonde data at at mid-latitude stations. First, we found no similar increase in Daejeon GPS TEC when the sudden enhancements of Anyang NmF2 occurred. Second, we investigated NmF2's observed at other ionosonde stations that use the same ionosonde model and auto-scaling program as the Anyang ionosonde. We found similar enhancements of NmF2 at these ionosonde stations. Moreover, the analysis of ionograms from Athens and Rome showed that there were sporadic-E layers with high electron density during the enhancements in NmF2. The auto-scaling program (ARTIST 4.5) used seems to recognize sporadic-E layer echoes as a F2 layer trace, resulting in the erroneous critical frequency of F2 layer (foF2). Other versions of the ARTIST scaling program also seem to produce similar erroneous results. Therefore we conclude that the sudden enhancements of NmF2 in Anyang data were due to the misrecognition of sporadic-E echoes as a F-layer by the auto-scaling program. We also noticed that although the scaling program flagged confidence level (C-level) of an ionogram as uncertain when a sporadic-E layer occurs, it still automatically computed erroneous foF2's. Therefore one should check the confidence level before using long term ionosonde data that were produced by an auto-scaling program.

  • In this paper, a modified FSA(Frequency Scaling Algorithm) is proposed for KOMPSAT-5 high-resolution SAR image generation. In order to enhance performance of azimuth compression, degraded in sub-aperture processing due to the imperfect geometric parameter of data acquisition, the full-aperture signal processing algorithm is designed based on the exact time-frequency analysis. In addition, an azimuth scaling function is newly devised to make the full-aperture processing algorithm suitable for KOMPSAT-5 sliding-spotlight mode. Different from the previous sub-aperture FSA schemes, the suggested technique could accommodate the merit of unified signal processing structure regardless of operational modes of KOMPSAT-5. Through the point target simulation, it is verified that the suggested algorithm provides superior performance of azimuth compression over the existing full-aperture processing methods. The experimental results using real data acquired by KOMPSAT-5 are also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme as well.
