  • When fresh concrete is exposed to the cold weather, the concrete may happen frost damage because of freezing at early ages and the strength development may be go down. Therefore, this paper is intend to investigate the properties and availabilities of cold weather concrete using anti-freeze based formate-acetate for ensure of excellent concrete quality on cold temperature. According to test result for concrete in anti-freeze agent, strength properties in sub-zero temperature increases in comparison with concrete of non anti-freeze agent without decline of strength until later age. When anti-freezing agent is added by 3.0% to binder, it gives good effects on the performance of the fresh and harden concrete.

  • This paper presents a three-dimensional, transient cold-start polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) model to numerically evaluate the effects of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) design and cell location in a PEFC stack on PEFC cold start behaviors. The cold-start simulations show that the end cell experiences significant heat loss to the sub-freezing ambient and thus finally cold-start failure due to considerable ice filling in the cathode catalyst layer. On the other hand, the middle cells in the stack successfully start from $-30^{\circ}C$ sub-freezing temperature due to rapid cell temperature rise owing to the efficient use of waste heat generated during the cold-start. In addition, the simulation results clearly indicate that the cathode catalyst layer (CL) composition and thickness have an substantial influence on PEFC cold-start behaviors while membrane thickness has limited effect mainly due to inefficient water absorption and transport capability at subzero temperatures.

  • For vessels operating in the cold climate regions, the ballast water inside or hopper tanks above the waterline may be frozen, starting at the top of the tank and at the side walls. Therefore, countermeasures against freeze-up of the ballast tank such as air-bubbling system, hot steam injecting system, heating coil system and water circulating system are taken to prevent freeze-up phenomenon; however, there are no rigorous investigations of anti-freezing to examine the effectiveness and validity of systems against freeze-up of the ballast tank, in which the temperatures are about $-25^{\circ}C$ (ambient air temperature) and $0^{\circ}C$ (sea water), respectively. In this paper, to ensure reasonable specifications for cold regions if the measures from the above-mentioned systems against freeze-up are effective, the phenomenon of ballast tank freeze-up is simulated and discussed in low temperature conditions. With the results using the commercial CFD code, CFX 14, the most cost-effective solution is conducted to prevent being frozen along the outer surface.

  • Scallop, Patinopecten yessonensis(Jay), cultivated in the cold east coast of Kwangwon region, Korea, is expected to be producted to about 50,000 tones in 2000 year. Freezing is one of the most effective methods applied for soraging seafoods. But, the domestic refrigerator with an automatic defrost system shows the temperature fluctuation during defrosting, thus might result in the deterioration of the frozen foods. In this study, the domestic refrigerator with an automatic defrost system, temperature fluctuation from -18 to -5$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ and fluctuation intervals from 16 to 20 hr, was used for storing scallop. pH was decreased rapidly after 3 month storage, while the content of amino nitrogen was increased continuously. The TMA content of open state was increased very rapidly on 3 month storage and then increased slowly, whereas that of vinyl package increased slowly. The VBN content was increased almost constantly with no significant differences between storage methods. The TBA content was increased up to 3 month storage with the higher value in open state than vinyl package in the beginning periods of storage, and then decreased very rapidly. The number of total viable cell was increased continuously during storage with higher number in open state than vinyl package. The estimated shelf-lives of frozen scallop with open state and vinyl package stored at -18$^{\circ}C$ in the domestic refrigerator with an automatic defrost system were 3.55 and 3.78 months, respectively.

  • Immobilization technique by PVA encapsulation is an effective alternative for wastewater treatment. However little information is available about the effect of PVA characteristics on physical properties as an encapsulation media. This study aims at investigating the effect of the preparation methods of PVA and filler addition to media on the solubility of PVA. The solubility decreased as the freezing temperature decreased and the vacuum-drying was applied. Addition of the PAC (Powered Activated Carbon) and organoclay decreased the solubility of the PVA gels. Organoclay was more effective for lowering the solubility about 25% than the PAC. Nitrification with the PVA-coating media was less sufficient than with the polyurethane media due to the mass transfer restriction for oxygen and nutrients.

  • We investigated changes of immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations by heating and drying condition. Also it is performed to group for commercial product by promoting of IgG preservation and reducing of protein denaturation. The result was that content of IgG in colostrum was higher than normal milk. Especially, IgG content of colostrum within 12 hrs after parturition was over 44.67mg/ml and it is 60 times of normal milk. IgG contents was reduced rapidly according as passage of the time. IgG content of the sample heating at 30min at 65$^{\circ}C$ was still a little higher that heating for 10sec at 72$^{\circ}C$. IgG denaturation of heat treatment at 100$^{\circ}C$ for 10sec was lower than at 85$^{\circ}C$ for 30min. We investigated the changes of IgG concentrations of kinds of market milk different with heating processing. This result showed that IgG denaturation ratio by ultra high temperature pasteurization (UHT) was higher than long time low temperature pasteurization (LTLT). On the other hands, IgG content by spray drying was 14.5mg/g and freezing drying was 10.8mg/g. It showed that denaturation of protein content by freezing drying was more than spray drying.

  • The study adopted a freezing prevention method of the upper deck which used heating coil, and carried out numerical analysis by using ANSYS 13.0 CFD for design guide of the vessel operating in cold region. It is based on the experimental results of the anti-icing performance tests which were carried at cold room chamber in MOERI. Numerical analysis for the design guide was performed by considering S.S.T. (Shear Stress Transport) turbulent model for flow separation effects and the turbulence which occurred in interfaces of the numerical model in order to express appropriate heat transmission phenomenon. The numerical result shows average temperature of the upper deck surface appeared similarly compared with the indoor chamber test. The design guide for optimum freezing prevention presented through heat transmission capability and interval of the heat coil in various outdoor temperature($10^{\circ}C{\sim}-30^{\circ}C$) and wind speed(1m/s~7m/s).

  • Supercooling storage refers to lowering the product temperature below its freezing point without phase transition and has the potential to extend shelf life. Nevertheless, supercooled objects are in a thermodynamically unstable state, and nucleation can occur spontaneously. To achieve supercooling storage, slow cooling and insulation are essential. Hence, a stepwise algorithm for the supercooling storage of pork loins was designed and validated in this study. Pork loins were stored at 3℃, -18℃, and -3℃ (freezing), and supercooled for 16 days. All samples remained in a supercooled state and were unfrozen at the end of storage. Supercooled pork loins were superior in terms of drip loss, cooking loss, and water-holding capacity compared to frozen samples. Additionally, supercooling treatment prevented discoloration, increase of volatile basic nitrogen, and microbial growth. Thus, supercooling of pork loin was achieved using a stepwise program and was effective to maintain meat quality.
