Low-temperature adaptation and protection for environmental stresses were studied in the gram-negative soil bacterium Bradyrhizobium japonicum 61A101c. B. japonicum was more resistant to alcohol, $H_2O_2$, heat and freezing following a pretreatment at $4^{\circ}C$, resulting in approximately 10 to 1,000 folds increased survival compared to mid-exponential-phase cells grown at an optimal temperature at $28^{\circ}C$. This phenomena relate to the cold shock protein expressed when cells are exposed to a downshift in temperature. To confirm the presence of cold shock protein genes in B. japonicum, a PCR strategy was employed using a degenerate primer set, which successfully amplified a putative csp gene fragment. Sequence analysis of the PCR product(200bp) revealed csp-like sequences that were up to 96% identical to csp gene of S. typhimurium.
An experimental study on the stratified fluids was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics, heat transfer through the interface of fluids, and the applications of thermal behaviors in the square cavity. The same volume of water and silicon oil was filled in it. The experiments were performed with the variations of initial temperatures and cooling surface temperatures. And the effect of vertical or horizontal cooling surface positions in the square cavity was investigated. When the cooling surface temperatures were $-4^{\circ}C$ , the supercooling phenomena were observed for both cases of cooling surface positions in the full region regardless of the initial temperature of fluid. In the square cavity with horizontal cooling surfaces, the lower the initial temperatures were, the longer the supercooling durations were, and with vertical cooling surface the lower the initial temperatures were, the shorter the supercooling durations were.
Water in concrete has an effect on properties of concrete very much, such as shrinkage, creep, fire resistance, durability, freezing and thawing resistance. Therefore predicting the moisture distribution in concrete is very important. And since the diffusion process of water in concrete is strongly dependent on the temperature and pore humidity, the process is highly nonlinear phenomena. In this study, a finite element program which was capable of simulating the moisture distribution in concrete was developed, and differential drying shrinkage due to the water diffusion process was measured at the different positions of concrete. This F.E.M. program is shown that the analytical results of this study are in good agreement with experimental data. Shrinkage strain caused by moisture distribution was increased with the decrease of pore relative humidity.
The lack of persistent excitation (PE) can be the reason of freezing in the recursive least square estimators and the covariance windup in the exponential weighted least square estimators. We present a theoretical analysis of these phenomena and a simple method to check the exciting condition in real time. Using these results and under some conditions such as slowly time varying Plant and a tracking problem for set point, a robust self-tuning regulators without PE is proposed. In this algorithm, when PE is not satisfied, only plant gain is estimated, and then the system parameters are corrected by it. It is shown that the gain adaptive scheme makes the robustness to be improved against modeling error, off-set, and correlated noise etc, by the results of analysis and simulations.
This paper deals with the numerical analysis of natural convection flow induced by the density inversion effect of water inside horizontal pipe. The numerical method is based on SIMPLE/PWIM in general coordinate for its wide applicabilities. The numerical tool was validated through the comparison with the previous results concerning the density inversion effect of water It is shown that the developed numerical tool could predict the flow pattern and the heat transfer phenomena qualitatively And it is also found that the density inversion effect of water has significant effects on the flow pattern.
It is well-known that concretes under sea water environment show remarkably degrading phenomena physically by repeatable freeze-thawing action and chemically by penetration of soluted ions in sea water. In this study the influences of type of blending materials, their dosage and W/C ratio on freeze-thawing resistances of hardened cement concrete using foy ash, ground blast furnace slag, silica fume, EVA and SBR under sea-water environment were investigated.
