  • The case of failure of Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) on the cement concrete pavement was reported in Korea. In the United States America, the fly ash has less than 10 percent Cao reported that prevent expansion by ASR. Most of all fly ash in Korea have less than 10 percent CaO, therefore it is similar ASTM F fly ash in the USA. Crushed aggregates of the test section had expansion behavior by potential ASR that the ASTM C 1260 test method tested expansion 0.17 percent during 14 days. The test section of concrete pavement used crushed aggregate was constructed that fly ash have 20 percent weight of cementitious materials to prevent expansion by ASR. This study was performed flexural strength test for elapsed days and durability by freeze-thaw test. It was shown that flexural strength was increased elapsed days and good performed freeze-thaw test. This study shown that fly ash concrete pavement was good performance in the test section.

  • Domestic area of most be happened chloride deicer damage. Because daily mean temperature is below 0$^{\circ}C$ from the area of domestic most. Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, not only the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and ability to deterioration roadway surface materials but also the source of environmental damages. Particularly, it has been recognized that chlorides present in deicing agents can significantly increase concrete surface scaling. In severe cases, scaling can result in dislodgement of coarse aggregate. This research estimates that pH and test of specific pollutants, dynamic modulus of elasticity for freeze-thaw test of concrete were higher than those NaCl, $CaCl_2$, and NaCl+$CaCl_2$(7:3, w/w), also weight losses for scaling test of concrete were much lower than those of NaCl, $CaCl_2$, and NaCl+$CaCl_2$(7:3, w/w).

  • A fine oil -in-water (O/W) emulsion using non-aqueous emulsification technique was developed. And the behaviors of POE(25)octyldodecyl ether in non-aqueous polyol/oil systems were studied by observing the surface tension, interfacial tension, turbidity and transition temperature. It was found that POE(25)octyldodecy1 ether hardly existed as the micelle in the non-aqueous polyol system while, in water, it formed micelles very easily. So, when a polyol, like glycerine in which POE(25)octyldodecyl ether has a poor solubility, was added, POE(25)octyldodecyl ether moved to the surface. After saturated at surface, POE(25)octyldodecyl ether began to precitate. The mean particle size of the final emulsion was 230nm. Also, the emulsion system was stable at 0$^{\circ}C$, 25$^{\circ}C$, 40$^{\circ}C$, 50 $^{\circ}C$ and freeze-thaw cycle chamber for a month, while a conventional emulsion system was unstable. It is concluded that, by pertinent combination of polyols, we can improve the adsorption efficiency of surfactant.

  • Polystyrene (PS) particles containing the phase change material (PCM) were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. The polymer particles prepared with different parameters were investigated in terms of average particle size, particle distribution, and latent heat storage of encapsulated paraffin wax (PW) as PCM. The morphology and particle features of PS particles were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and particle size analyzer, respectively. As a result, the diameters of PS particles were adjusted with manufacturing conditions. The stable and spherical PS particles of nanosize were obtained by miniemulsion polymerization, which could be attributed to the prevention of Ostwald ripening by cosurfactant. Thermal properties of PS particle containing PCM were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. From DSC freeze-thaw cycle, PCM coated with PS exhibited the thermal energy storage and release behaviors, and the latent heat was found to be a maximum 145 J/g. It was noted that PS particles containing PCM showed a good potential as a thermal energy storage medium.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ground granulated blast-furnace slag on strength development and durability of ordinary portland cement concrete (OPC) with steam curing types. Main experimental variables were slag contents(0%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%) and curing types (standard, accelerated curing). It were performed to check the basic properties of concretes that compressive strength, rapid chloride ion permeability and chemical resistance. From the result, we have found that increasing the amount of blast-furnace slag produced concrete with increased compressive strength and permeability resistance. Rapid freezing-thawing test showed that they were good enough to protect the concrete structures and to carry out cyclic freezing and thawing. The freeze-thaw resistance of blast-furnace slag produced concretes maintained above 90% of relative dynamic modulus after 300 freezing-thawing cycles. Increasing the amount of blast-furnace slag produced concretes with increased chemical resistance.

  • Experimental study on the durability characteristics to examine the feasibility of concrete with high water-tightness and self-healing performance to minimize maintenance of concrete for artificial ground is as follows. 1) When blending agent, swelling agents, and curing accelerator were added on the ternary system cement with blast-furnace slag fine particles and fly ash to give a self-healing property, higher blending strengths by 82% at design standard strength of 24MPa and by 74% at design strength of 30MPa, respectively could be obtained. 2) The permeability test for the specimens having high water-tightness and no shrinkage showed that the permeability was reduced at maximum of 98%. However, the permeability was decreased as the design strength was increased, showing the reduction rate of 87% at the design strength of 50MPa. 3) The depth of carbonation of blast-furnace slag and fly ash was increased in all the specimens compared with those of OPC only. However, as the material age was increased, carbonation penetration depth was decreased compared with the reference blend. 4) Compared with the reference blending using only OPC, the freeze-thaw resistance was higher in the case of blending with 40% of blast-furnace slag and 10% of fly ash at the design standard strength of 50MPa. In addition, the freeze-thaw resistance in general was superior in the design standard strength of 50MPa with the lower water-binder ratio (W/B) as compared with the design standard strength of 24MPa and 30MPa with the high water-binder ratios.

  • In this study, synthetic fibers were applied to reduce shrinkage cracks that may occur in mortar produced by 3D printer. We used a biopolymer in powder form made from cactus stem (CS) as an admixture. The material properties of 3D printed mortar were experimentally evaluated. Replacing methylcellulose(MC) with 10% CS increases compressive strength by 9.84-23.92% regardless of the casting method. In addition, regardless of the casting method, shrinkage change, freeze-thaw resistance, and crack resistance are more effective than Plain. Incorporation of CS increases the polysaccharide macromolecular structure and improves durability. Mortars reinforced with synthetic fibers do not affect compressive strength and freeze-thaw. It is also effective for shrink deformation and crack resistance. Incorporating CS and fibers from 3D-printed mortar was found to be effective for durability and crack resistance.

  • The effect of cycled temperature change on the mechanical properties of wood flour(50 wt.% and 70 wt.%) polypropylene WPC(Wood Plastic Composites) was investigated in this study. Flexural modulus and flexural strength of the WPC showed a decrease due to the degradation of interfacial adhesion between polymer matrix and wood flour by the freeze-thaw test regardless of the cycled number. At the higher loading level of wood flour, the reduction of the flexural modulus was remarkable. After the cycled heat-freeze test, it was found that the flexural modulus and flexural strength of the WPC were lower at the high temperature ($60^{\circ}C$) and higher at the low temperature ($-20^{\circ}C$). At the low temperature ($-20^{\circ}C$) which is below glass transition temperature of polypropylene ($-10^{\circ}C$), WPC is in a glassy state which brings about the high stiffness and strength. At the high temperature ($60^{\circ}C$), the flexural modulus and flexural strength of the WPC with 50 wt.% wood flour were lower because of the increase of polymer ductility.

  • This study examined the effects of freezing and thawing conditions on quality of Hanwoo bottom round. The beef samples were frozen by air blast freezing at $-20^{\circ}C$ or ethanol immersion freezing at $-70^{\circ}C$ and then stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. After 10 days of storage, the frozen samples were thawed with air blast thawing at $4^{\circ}C$ or water immersion thawing at $4^{\circ}C$ and subjected to subsequent analyses of drip loss, water holding capacity, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), total aerobic bacteria, and microstructure. Drip loss significantly increased in samples treated with air blast freezing compared to ethanol immersion freezing, whereas freezing and thawing processes had no significant impact on water holding capacity of the samples. Thawing conditions had a much stronger influence on the TBARS and VBN of the samples than freezing conditions. There was no significant difference in the population of total aerobic bacteria among the four samples subjected to one freeze-thaw cycle. In addition, to analyze the effects of freeze-thaw cycle on the quality of beef, three freeze-thaw cycles were performed during storage. Multiple freeze-thaw cycles increased drip loss, TBARS, and VBN and decreased water holding capacity, accelerating microstructural damage. These data indicate that Hanwoo bottom round can be rapidly frozen and thawed by using ethanol immersion freezing and water immersion thawing methods with minimal impact on meat quality.
