  • Roll moment usually is ignored when analyzing the maneuverability of surface ships. However, it is well known that the influence of roll moment on maneuverability is significant for ships with small metacentric height such as container ships, passenger ships, etc. In this study, a pure roll test is performed to determine the hydrodynamic derivatives with respect to roll motion as added mass and damping. The target ship is an autonomous surface ship designed to carry containers with a small drift and large freeboard. The commercial code of STAR CCM+ software is applied as a specialized tool in naval hydrodynamic based on RANS equation for simulating the pure roll of the ship. The numerical uncertainty analysis is conducted to verify the numerical accuracy. By distinguishing the in-phase and out-of-phase from hydrodynamic forces and moments due to roll motion, added mass derivatives and damping derivatives relative to roll angular velocity are obtained.

  • We estimated the expected flood damage considering uncertainty which is involved in hydrologic processes and data. Actually, this uncertainty represents a freeboard or safety factor in the design of hydraulic structures. The uncertainty was analyzed using Bootstrap method, and SIR algorithm then the frequency based rainfalls were estimated for each method of uncertainty analysis. Also the benefits for each uncertainty analysis were estimated using 'multi-dimensional flood damage analysis(MD-FDA). As a result, the expected flood damage with SIR algorithm was 1.22 times of present status and Boostrap 0.92 times. However when we used SIR algorithm, the likelihood function should be selected with caution for the estimation of the expected flood damage.

  • In this study, we propose a new method for evaluating the vulnerability to flooding river levee. The purpose of this study is to examine how to apply the factors necessary to calculate the proposed levee flood index. To do this, the safety flood level was analyzed by applying the planned flood level. The levee flood vulnerabilities index was calculated based on seven factors such as freeboard, levee crown section, levee section ratio, safety factor, raised spot length, Seepage line change degree, and critical velocity. The Levee Flood Vulnerability Index(LFVI) of the levee developed in this study was used to levee vulnerability analysis. The results of the analysis were divided into 1 to 7 grades using Levee Flood Vulnerability Index(LFVI).

  • A system of risk assessment is developed by using the reliability analysis which evaluate quantitatively both stability and performance of sloped-coastal structures according to several scenarios of sea-level rise. By using reliability functions on armor unit and run-up, the probabilities of failure can be straightforwardly calculated with respect to several design parameters such as nominal diameter of armor unit, slope of coastal structure, and freeboard height. By comparing the results before and after sea-level rise, it may be possible to exactly assess some ranges of decrease of stability and performance of sloped-coastal structure with respect to sea-level rise. Therefore, it can also be possible to make a decision which parameters should be repaired or strengthened in order to maintain the original stability and performance of sloped-coastal structures. Finally, The present results may be useful for designing some kinds of new sloped-coastal structures including the effect of sea-level rise.

  • SUPER concrete poontoon is developed to overcome shortcomings about corrosion problem of steel pontoon and the insufficient freeboard line of concrete pontoon. Top slab of Pontoon resists truck load or sidewalk live load. The soffit slab and outer wall of Pontoon resist the horizontal and vertical components of wave pressure, and those were loaded along X and Y-axis of Pontoon. Global analysis for the Pontoon is carried out to design its cross-sections economically using a geometric non-linear time history analysis method by Strand7 and buoyance-stability calculated automatically on non-vertical boundary conditions. And the load-capacity of Pontoon is confirmed through mock-up tests.

  • Multi-functional weirs has been installed in four rivers are hydraulic structures across the river. The structures were divided into movable and fixed weirs. Hence, riverbed-level variation and sediment transport can be varied due to water gate operation. In this study, the long-term riverbed-level variation of Geum river basin due to water gate operation of multi-functional weirs was studied. Result of this study shows that the variation of thalweg elevation was greater than the variation of annual average riverbed elevation due to multi-functional weirs construction and water gate operation. Maximum riverbed degradation of thalweg elevation that occurred was 2.79m and riverbed aggradation was 1.90m. Maximum riverbed degradation of the annual average riverbed elevation that occurred was 2.16m and riverbed aggradation was 1.24m. Analysis result of flood stage by the variation of riverbed-level shows that flood stages were increased in majorities area. The maximum increase in the value of flood stage was 2.23m. For this reason, flood stages can be greater than the freeboard of the levees. Therefore, we should consider the water gate operation of multi-functional weirs when planning and managing sediment in the river. We are expecting to use the result of this study in river planning for river management and selecting the river regime.

  • In this study, an analytical studies were carried out for the buoyancy preflexion method to improve structural performance of concrete floating structures. The buoyancy preflexion means that the preflexion effects were induced to the floating structure due to the difference in buoyancy between the pontoon modules composing the floating structures. In order to verify the buoyancy preflexion effects, an analytical studies were carried out for the floating structures. The size and dimensions of FE model were determined through the structural design process. The parameter of this analytical study was length ratios of central module part, which induces buoyancy preflexion effects, to the total length. The analysis results were pre-compression on the bottom concrete slab and displacement of freeboard due to buoyancy preflexion effects. These results were processed according to the loading step, buoyancy preflexion loads on the bottom and live loads on the topside. Then, the buoyancy preflexion effects on structural performance was analyzed. As the results of this study, it was found that the buoyancy preflexion significantly influence on structural performance of floating structures. According to the length ratio, the buoyancy preflexion effects have a tendency of parabolic form and maximized at the length ratio of 40~60%. The buoyancy preflexion method is simple in principle and easy in application. Also, it can effectively induce pre-compression on the bottom concrete slab. Therefore, it can be concluded that the buoyancy preflexion method contribute to the improvement of structural performance and decreasing of the cross-sectional depth of floating structures.

  • A reservoir is defined as an artificial facility that stores and controls water during floods and droughts. Korea has constructed and managed reservoirs all over the country to benefit farming communities. The importance of reservoirs has decreased gradually due to urbanization and the spread of tap water, but the importance of water is increasing because of the recent shortage of water and the resulting rise in the price of water resources. Therefore, this study suggests countermeasures through an analysis of the used threshold for agricultural reservoirs. To this end, the forecast of rainfall up to 2100 was first analyzed using flood estimates and RCP scenarios through rainwater data collection. The increase in the RCP 8.5 scenario, the largest increase in the probability rainfall, was calculated by adding it to the current probability rainfall, and it was predicted that the marginal height of Odong Dam would reach its limit in 2028. Therefore, as a countermeasure against this, the measures to secure effective water storage were suggested through measures, such as lowering the height of Yeosu and installing movable beams. Overall, it is expected that effective management of the reservoirs used for agriculture will be possible in the future.
