  • This paper classifies the structure of the intersection curve between a surface of extrusion and a free-form surface. Our algorithm computes the silhouette curve of the free-form surface with respect to the unique ruling direction of the surface of extrusion. By intersecting the silhouette curve and the base curve of the surface of extrusion, we can classify the topological structure of the intersection curve, and compute all singularities in the intersection curve. Moreover, we can determine which ruling lines of the surface of extrusion intersect the other free-form surface and how many times. This classification provides a robust and efficient method for computing the intersection curve.

  • Tool interference is one of the most critical problems in sculptured surface machining. When machining cavities and concaves, the tool frequently overcuts the portions of the surface, which cause inaccuracy in machining. So tool interference-free paths must be generated for rough cutting more efficiently. In this paper a software using SSI(Surface/Surface intersection) algorithm is developed for eliminating tool interference which occurs in an offset surface in 3-dimensional free form surface modeling. this work consists of two stages : using the offset data, the intersection curves are rapidly checked by this algorithm at the first stage. CL(cutter location) data are obtained by deleting the loop section of intersected offset patches at the second stage. This algorithm can reduce the amount of memory required to store machining data and also easily check region which have the possibility of intersection. Also, This software is verified to be useful in machining a curved object on a DNC milling machine.

  • It is difficult to make shape library for featrue-based modeling because free-form surface is various shaped complicated To make modeling using similar shape feature-based model is easy and fast. Recently RE(Reverse Engineering) technolo-gy is very convenient method to get free-form surface. This study develops surface editor which makes surface modeling to manipulate control points and this study We study on the effective model data management using database system.

  • The Accuracy of a free-form artifact is affected by machine tool errors, machining process errors, environmental causes and other uncertainty. This paper deals with methodological approach about machine tool errors that are defined the relationship between CMM and OMM inspections of the free-form artifact. In order to analyze the measurement data, Reverse engineering was used. In other words, Surface of Free-Form Artifact is generated by NURBS surface approximation method. Finally, Volumetric error map is made to compare surface of CMM data with that of OMM data.

  • This paper proposes the scattered data interpolation as an efficient method that is designed for free-form surface. Data interpolation is an essential method of designing for various objects. For the generating free-form surface of complexity construction, the existing method had problems to represent flat area and sharp corner edge, in presenting objects with computing the weight of control points. For solving this problem, we proposes the generating method of new approximation surfaces, using scattered data interpolation. This method obtains B-Spline basis function which calculates main curvature, having optimized value in variable area, on given control points and changed objects, and then computes the changing rate the approximating data, using it's value. We also present this method that generates smoother free-form surface, using the scattered data interpolation with minimum weight.

  • We present an algorithm for surface reconstruction from the second-derivative data for free-form aspherics, which uses a subaperture scanning system that measures the local surface profile and determines the three second-derivative values at those local sampling points across the free-form surface. The three second-derivative data were integrated to get a map of x- and y-slopes, which went through a second Southwell integration step to reconstruct the surface profile. A synthetic free-form surface 200 mm in diameter was simulated. The simulation results show that the reconstruction error is 19 nm RMS residual difference. Finally, the sensitivity to noise is diagnosed for second-derivative Gaussian random noise with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 16, the simulation results proving that the suggested method is robust to noise.

  • Automated magnetic abrasive polishing which can be applied after machining of the mold on a machine tool without unloading is very effective for finishing a complicated injection mold surface. This study aims to realize one step polishing of free form surface with the same machine tool. For this purpose, magnetic flux density according to the change of curvature radii was simulated for selecting polishing conditions and experimental verification was performed with a complicated mold of aluminum alloy. As a result, it was seen by the simulation that the magnetic flux density at a gradual curvature of the mold was higher than at a steep curvature and the higher magnetic flux density produced the better surface roughness in the experimentation. The deviation for the surface roughness of the mold decreased on the whole and the uniform mold surface was obtained after the automated magnetic abrasive polishing.

  • Using form parameters representing geometric characteristics of the form, this paper attempts the generation of 3-D free surface given in terms of B-spline surface equation. This is achieved by coupling the form parameter decision, Coons surface of the form parameters, and B-spline. To check the validing of the present method, a analogous surface to the bulbous bow was generated.

  • In recent years, there is increasing demand of esthetic design and complex function in aerospace, automobile and die/mold industry, which brings into limelight high-precision, high-efficient machining of sculptured surface. This paper deals with the establishment of the optimal tool path on free form surface in high speed ball end milling. Ball end milling is widely used for free form surface die and mold. In this machining, the cutting direction was changed with tool path. The cutting characteristics, such as cutting force and surface form are varied according to the variation of cutting directions. In this paper, the optimal tool path with down cutting in free form surface cutting is suggested.
