A prototype surface flow constructed wetland was built in the upstream area of reclaimed tidal lands to improve the water quality of Lake Sihwa by treating severely polluted stream water. In this study, a tracer test using rhodamine-WT was performed to investigate the flow characteristics and to quantify the observed hydraulic residence time (HRT) for a high-lying cell in the Banwol wetland of the Sihwa constructed wetland. The tracer test indicated that even if flow was mainly observed in the open water area of the Banwol wetland, water flowed continuously in the vegetative area and there was no dead zone. The calculated HRT (51.3 hrs), calculated by dividing the wetland volume by the wetland inflow, exceeded the observed HRT (38.7 hrs), since the short-circuiting of flux resulting from irregular topography and vegetation was not reflected in the calculated HRT. The exit tracer concentration curves were reproduced well by both the plug flow with dispersion and tanks-in-series models, indicating that the performance of the Banwol wetland can be estimated accurately using these models.
An experimental study Is conducted in a four-vane linear cascade in order to examine the influence of the wake behind rectangular bars on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress are measured using a hot-wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique is used. Each of experimental cases is characterized by the unsteadiness measured at the entrance of the cascade. The wake behind the rectangular bars enhances the turbulent motion of the flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface increase with increasing unsteadiness.

This study investigated the transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a free-water surface flow constructed wetland. Pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) coupled with preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (prep-HPLC) was used to analyze the compositions of biopolymers (polysaccharides, amino sugars, proteins, polyhydroxy aromatics, lipids and lignin) in DOM according to the molecular size at three sampling points of the water flow: inflow, midflow, and outflow. The prep-HPLC results verified the decomposition of DOM through the decrease in the number of peaks from three to one in the chromatograms of the sampling points. The Py-GC/MS results for the degradable peaks indicated that biopolymers relating to polysaccharides and proteins gradually biodegraded with the water flow. On the other hand, the recalcitrant organic fraction (the remaining peak) in the outflow showed a relatively high concentration of aromatic compounds. Therefore, the ecological processes in the constructed wetland caused DOM to become more aromatic and homogeneous. This indicated that the constructed wetland can be an effective buffer area for releasing biochemically stable DOM, which has less influence on biological water quality indicators, e.g., biochemical oxygen demand, into an aquatic ecosystem.
This paper presents the analytical method for predicting turbulence- induced noise in the multilayered cylinder composed of an outer hose, an inner fluid and an internal core. It is assumed that an infinite axisymmetric cylinder is located horizontally in water with free stream velocity and the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) surrounding the outer hose is fully developed and homogeneous. The transfer function at the core surface due to the propagation of the pressure fluctuation within the TBL is formulated using the linearized Navier-Stockes equation for solid and fluid. In the estimation of the energy spectrum of wall pressure fluctuation, the empirical formula proposed by Strawderman based on the Corcos model is used. A general algorithm for the calculation of the pressure level at the surface of a core, that is, turbulence- induced noise, is presented. Through the detailed numerical simulation, it is found that the major noise mechanism is the propagation of the bulge wave along hose.
Polycrystalline Al-Cu ribbons were produced by planar flow casting(PFC). Solidification behavior and microstructual changes of the ribbons have been investigated as a function of ribbon thickness and processing parameters. The solidification front velocity, V varies within the ribbon, decreasing with increasing the distance, S from the wheel-contact surface, as $V=17.6S^{-1}$. In Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy, rapid decrease in solidification velocity toward the free surface causes a change in solidification morphology from planar to cellular, and finally, to dendritic. The length and inclination of columnar grains solidified with planar front were related to the wheel velocity. The transition from particulate degenerate eutectic structure to regular lamellar eutectic structure was observed to be caused by a difference of the relative growth velocites of ${\alpha}-Al$ and ${\theta}$ during solidification in the Al-Cu eutectic alloy.
It is commonly known that, in GMAW, the characteristics of metal transfer and the size of molten drop are highly dependent on the welding current. These changes in the characteristics of metal transfer has a considerable effect on the weld quality, and a lot of studies have been made on metal transfer modes for that reason. In this study, two cases were investigated; the one in which the metal transfer proceeds with gravitational force, surface tension, and no electromagnetic force, and the other in which the process has electromagnetic term in addition, where the current density in the fluid has been assumed to have Gaussian distribution on any given cross-section and it acts vertically. Using fluid flow analysis, this study has observed the whole process of the development and break-up of the molten drop, and it also showed that transitional processes, drop rate, and the drop size in each metal transfer mode can be estimated.
In this paper, the spin-up from rest to a state of solid-body rotation in a circular container with a slender rectangular obstacle on the bottom wall is analysed experimentally. We use a PIV method for the evolution of the free-surface flow. Laboratory experiments have been carried out for a variety of the obstacle height h(0, 5, 10 [mm]) and the liquid depth H(25, 50, 75, 100 [mm]). It was found that the spin-up time is crucially dependent on the obstacle height T. In the case of T=10[mm] the spin-up time is considerably shorter then the other cases.
Surface and interfacial waves in two superposed horizontal inviscid fluids of finite depths are studied. The flow is induced by translating a vertical rigid plate with a prescribed velocity. Analytical solutions that accurately predict the motion of the free surface and the interface are obtained by using a small-Froude-number approximation. Three different velocities of the plate are considered, while flows induced by any arbitrary motion of the plate can be easily analyzed by a linear superposition of the solutions obtained. It is shown that pinching of the upper layer can occur for a sufficiently thin upper layer, which leads to its rupture into small segments. Other interesting phenomena, such as primary and secondary wiggles generated on the interface near the wavemaker, are discussed.
