  • Cavitating flow is usually formed on the surface of a high speed underwater object. When a object moves near a free surface at very high speed, the cavity signature becomes one of the major factors to be overcome by sensors of military satellite. The present work was to study the free surface effect on the ventilated cavitation. The governing equations were Navier-Stokes equations based on a homogeneous mixture model. The multiphase flow solver used an implicit preconditioning method in the curvilinear coordinate system. The cavitation model used here was the one first presented by Merkle et al.(2006) and redeveloped by Park & Ha(2009). Computations considered the free surface effects were carried out with a NACA0012 hydrofoil and the corresponding results were compared with the experimental data to have a good agreement. Calculations were then performed considering the ventilated cavitation, including the effect of non-condensable gas under the free surface effects.

  • Analysis of two-dimensional unsteady flows with a free surface in a rectangular container subject to a linear reciprocating force is performed by numerical and experimental methods. FVM is used for the numerical computation of the two-dimensional flows. We consider the surface tension as well as the viscous/elastic properties of the free surface. One-dimensional analysis as well as experiment is used in establishing the free surface properties. The steady recirculatory flow is visualized by a laser sheet. It is shown that the one-dimensional analysis provides useful informations associated with the free surface properties.

  • Under the assumption of potential flow, free-surface flows around a 2-dimensional hydrofoil are calculated by high-order spoctral/boundary-integral method. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear interactions between hydrofoil and free-surface can be simulated in time-domain. Comparisons of the calculated free-surface profiles with other experimental results show relatively good agreements. As another example, free-surface flow generated by the heaving and translating hydrofoil is calculated and discussed.

  • Accurate simulation of free-surface wave flows around a ship is very important for better hull-form design. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, termed SNUFOAM, which is based on the open source libraries, OpenFOAM, was developed to predict the wave patterns around a ship. Additional anti-diffusion source term for minimizing a numerical diffusion, which was caused by convection differencing scheme, was considered in the volume-fraction transport equation. The influence of the anti-diffusion source term was tested by applying it to free-surface wave flow around the Wigley model ship. In results, the band width of the volume fraction contours between 0.1 to 0.9 at the hull surface was narrowed by considering the anti-diffusion term.

  • A flow visualization study using the oil film method and the smoke-laser light sheet arrangement is carried out to investigate the three-dimensional flow pattern around the free end surface region of a finite circular cylinder (aspect ratios of 1.25 and 4.25) mounted on a flat plate. The experiment is performed for the cases of two Reynolds numbers: 5.92${\times}$10$^3$and 1.48${\times}$10(sup)5. Various kinds of singular points on the free-end surface are disclosed from the oil surface flow visualization. The smoke-laser light sheet visualization, to aid in understanding the oil streak-line patterns, clearly demonstrates that a pair of tornado-like vortices marched along the downstream together with a pair of side tip vortices. A topological sketch to characterize the surface flow and the four vortices emanating from the top surface is included.

  • In this paper, two new techniques, the pattern filling and the refined flow field regeneration, based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach have been developed to analyze incompressible viscous flow with free surfaces. The gorerning equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The penalty and Newton-Raphson methods are used effectively for finite element formulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the pattern filling technique to select an adequate pattern among five filling patterns at each quadrilateral control volume. By the refined flow field regeneration technique, the new flow field which renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. Using the new thchniques to be developed, the dam-breaking problem has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions versus time have been compared with the reported experimental result.

  • Analysis of two-dimensional secondary flows given by an oscillatory motion of a liquid with a free surface in a rectangular container subject to a linear reciprocating force is performed by numerical and experimental methods. FVM is used for the numerical computation of the two-dimensional flows. We considered the effects of the free-surface properties such as the surface tension and the dilatational viscosity. The boundary-layer analysis as well as an experiment is used in establishing the free surface properties. The secondary flow patterns are visualized by a laser sheet. It is shown that the secondary flow patterns predicted by the numerical methods are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Additional anti-diffusion source term for minimizing a numerical diffusion, which was caused by convection differencing scheme, was considered in the volume-fraction transport equation. In results, the wave patterns and hull wave profiles of the Wigley and KCS model ships for various anti-diffusion coefficients showed quite close patterns. While, the band width of the water volume-fraction values between 0.1 to 0.9 at the Wigley and KCS model hull surfaces was narrowed by considering the anti-diffusion term. From the results, anti-diffusion source term decreased free-surface smearing.

  • The characteristics of flow past a square cylinder submerged under the free surface have been numerically studied. An immersed boundary method was adopted for implementation of the cylinder cross-section in a Cartesian grid system. Also, a level-set method was used to capture the interface of the two fluids. The case for Reynolds number 150 was examined. At the specific Reynolds number, by varying the gap ratio(0.25, 0.40, 0.55, 0.70, 1.00, 1.50, 2.50, 5.00) the effects of the free surface on the force coefficients and Strouhal number of vortex shedding were identified. The presence of the free surface very close to the cylinder significantly affects the shedding pattern, resulting in considerable deviation of the force coefficients and Strouhal number from those of the single-phase flow. In addition, the influence of Froude number was considered in this study. By increasing Froude number(0.2-0.4), flow topology change was identified at the specific gap ratios(0.40, 0.70, 1.50, 5.00).

  • In this study the change of free surface vortex is expressed through the time volume fraction using multiphase unsteady condition in sump, because in previous studies of the pump sump did not represent the behavior of the free surface vortex exactly due to the reason it was calculated using single phase and steady condition. The reliability of the computational analysis is verified through comparing experimental results with that of present numerical analysis. Homogeneous free surface model is used to apply interactions of air and water. The results show that the free surface vortex can be identified on the isotropic surface at air volume fraction 1%~5%. The vortices make an air column from the free surface to the sump intake and are created and destroyed repeatedly. The behavior of free surface vortex at numerical analysis is quite similar to experimental test. The result of vortex motion according to time, works on a cycle.
