Currently, the construction trend of high-rise structures is changing from a cube-shaped box to a free-form. In the case of free-form structures, it is difficult to predict the behavior of the structure because it induces torsional deformation due to inclined columns and the eccentricity of the structure by the horizontal load. For this reason, it is essential to review the stability by considering the design variables at the design stage. In this paper, the position of the weak vertical member was analyzed by analyzing the behavior of the structure according to the change in the core position of the twisted high-rise structures. In the case of the shear wall, the shear force was found to be high in the order of proximity to the center of gravity of each floor of the structure. In the case of the column, the component force was generated by the axial force of the outermost beam, so the bending moment was concentrated on the inner column with no inclination.
Truss-Z (TZ) is an Extremely Modular System (EMS). Such systems allow for creation of structurally sound free-form structures, are comprised of as few types of modules as possible, and are not constrained by a regular tessellation of space. Their objective is to create spatial structures in given environments connecting given terminals without self-intersections and obstacle-intersections. TZ is a skeletal modular system for creating free-form pedestrian ramps and ramp networks. The previous research on TZ focused on global discrete geometric optimization of the spatial configuration of modules. This paper reports on the first attempts at structural optimization of the module for a single-branch TZ. The internal topology and the sizing of module beams are subject to optimization. An important challenge is that the module is to be universal: it must be designed for the worst case scenario, as defined by the module position within a TZ branch and the geometric configuration of the branch itself. There are four variations of each module, and the number of unique TZ configurations grows exponentially with the branch length. The aim is to obtain minimum-mass modules with the von Mises equivalent stress constrained under certain design load. The resulting modules are further evaluated also in terms of the typical structural criterion of compliance.
The governing equation for a dome-type shallow spatial truss subjected to a transverse load is expressed in the form of the Duffing equation, and it can be derived by considering geometrical non-linearity. When this model under constant load exceeds the critical level, unstable behavior is appeared. This phenomenon changes sensitively as the number of free-nodes increases or depends on the imperfection of the system. When the load is a periodic function, more complex behavior and low critical levels can be expected. Thus, the dynamic unstable behavior and the change in the critical point of the 3-free-nodes space truss system were analyzed in this work. The 4-th order Runge-Kutta method was used in the system analysis, while the change in the frequency domain was analyzed through FFT. The sinusoidal wave and the beating wave were utilized as the periodic load function. This unstable situation was observed by the case when all nodes had same load vector as well as by the case that the load vector had slight difference. The results showed the critical buckling level of the periodic load was lower than that of the constant load. The value is greatly influenced by the period of the load, while a lower critical point was observed when it was closer to the natural frequency in the case of a linear system. The beating wave, which is attributed to the interference of the two frequencies, exhibits slightly more behavior than the sinusoidal wave. And the changing of critical level could be observed even with slight changes in the load vector.
In this paper, the dynamic response was analyzed by performing linear dynamic analysis using historic earthquake loads on twisted-shaped structures and fixed structure among free-form high-rise structures with atypical elevation shape following prior studies. In addition, the dynamic characteristics of the analysis models according to the plane rotation angle of the twisted structure were compared and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, as the plane rotation angle of the twisted structure increased, the interlayer deformation rate increased in the high-rise part of 50th floors or more. The story shear force and the story absolute acceleration were similar in the entire structure. In the case of the story shear force, the response of the twisted shape model was rather reduced in the middle part. As a result of analyzing the dynamic response, the vulnerable layer where the response amplification of the twisted structure occurs was found to be 31st story.
This paper deals with the experimental validation of the use of PVDF Patches for the assessment of spatial derivatives of displacement field. It focuses more exactly on the shear Force Identification by using Specific forms of PVDF patcHes (FISH) on beams. An overview of the theoretical approach is exposed. The principle is based on the use of the weak form of the equation of motion of the beam which allows the shear forces to be extracted at one edge of the sensor when this last has a specific form. The experimental validation is carried out with a cantilever steel beam, excited by a shaker at its free boundary. The validation consists in comparing the shear force measured by the designed sensor glued at the free edge and the directly measured force applied by the shaker. The sensor is made of two patches, called the "stiffness" patch and the "mass" patch. The use of both patches allows one to identify correctly the shear force on a large frequency domain. The use of only the stiffness patch is valid in the low frequency domain and has the advantage to have a frequency-independent gain that allows its use in real time.
The central regions of barred-spiral galaxies contain interesting gaseous structures such as dust lanes located at the leading side of the bar and nuclear rings that are sites of intense star formation. Our previous studies showed how gas structures form under the influence of a non-axisymmetric bar potential and temporal/spatial behavior of the star formation in nuclear rings. However, previous works were limited to 2-dimensional infinitesimally-thin, unmagnetized and isothermal disks. To study effects of cooling/heating, vertical motions of gas structures and magnetic field, we use Mesh-Free magneto-hydrodynamic simulation code GIZMO. We find that temporal variations of the star formation rates in the nuclear ring in the three-dimensional model are overall similar those in the previous two-dimensional results, although the former shows more violent small-scale fluctuations near the early primary peak. We will present our recent results about evolution of gaseous structures and star formation rate compare with results of previous studies.
While spatial plastic mechanism analysis has been widely and successfully applied to thinwalled steel structures to analyse the post-failure behaviour of sections and connections, there remains some contention in the literature as to the basic capacity of an inclined yield line. The simple inclined hinge commonly forms as part of the more complex spatial mechanism, which may involve a number of hinges perpendicular or inclined to the direction of thrust. In this paper some of the existing theories are compared with single inclined yield lines that form in flange outstands, by comparing the theories with plate tests of plates simply supported on three sides with the remaining (longitudinal) edge free. The existing mechanism theories do not account for different in-plane displacement gradients of the loaded edge, nor the slenderness of the plates, and produce conservative results. A modified theory is presented whereby uniform and non-uniform in-plane displacements of the loaded edge of the flange, and the slenderness of the flange, are accounted for. The modified theory is shown to compare well with the plate test data, and its application to flanges that are components of sections in compression and/or bending is presented.
The F3D(Free-Form Formwork 3D Printer) technology that manufactures EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) formworks for irregular-shaped concrete structures by 3D printers was developed to reduce the cost and time. Because of weak strength and low elastic modulus of the EPS, structural performance including lateral pressure by fresh concrete of the formwork that consisted of EPS should be investigated. In order to calculate lateral pressures acting on formwork, several variables including sizes, shapes of formwork, tangential force(fricition) between fresh concrete and formwork, and material properties of fresh concrete should be considered. However, current regulations have not considered the properties of concrete, only focused on vertical formwork. Galleo introduced 3-dimensional finite element analysis models to calculate lateral pressure on formwork. Thus, proposed finite element analysis model based on previous studies were verified for vertical formwork and irregular-shaped formwork. The test results were compared with those by FEM analysis. As a result, the test agrees well with the analysis.
Recently, Free-Form and Irregular Shape high-rise buildings are constructed by IT technology development. Tilted shaped high-rise building which is one of Irregular shape high-rise buildings can cause lateral displacement by gravity load and lateral load due to tilted elevation shape. Therefore, it is necessary to review the behavior and structural aspects of the Tilted shape high-rise building by gravity load. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a tilted structure with a dual-core were analyzed with the core location as a design variable, and response behavior, vulnerable members, and vulnerable layers to earthquake loads were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, as the location of the core moved in an tilted direction, the eccentric distance and eccentric load decreased, reducing the axial force of the vertical members. However, the location of the core had little effect on the response.
A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of solid paraboloidal and complete (that is, without a top opening) paraboloidal shells of revolution with variable wall thickness. Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D), the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. The ends of the shell may be free or may be subjected to any degree of constraint. Displacement components $u_r,\;u_{\theta},\;and\;u_z$ in the radial, circumferential, and axial directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in ${\theta}$, and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the paraboloidal shells of revolution are formulated, and the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the complete, shallow and deep paraboloidal shells of revolution with variable thickness. Numerical results are presented for a variety of paraboloidal shells having uniform or variable thickness, and being either shallow or deep. Frequencies for five solid paraboloids of different depth are also given. Comparisons are made between the frequencies from the present 3-D Ritz method and a 2-D thin shell theory.
