Efficient stereoselective synthesis of α,β-Unsaturated acids, α-Cyanoacrylonitriles and α-Cyanoacrylates has been carried out in the presence of NaHSO4·SiO2 under solvent?free conditions with an E-geometry.
This study was designed to investigate the method of the simultaneous determination of water-soluble vitamins (thiamine, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, folic acid, cyanocobalamine, pyridoxin, nicotinic acid) by free soloution capillary electrophoresis. Factors affecting on the separation were pH of the buffer, applied voltage and temperature. On-column detection at 254 nm allowed accurate and reproducible determination of these compounds. All these compounds were separated within ca. 8 min with fused silica capillary at 20 kV.
Porphyrin-rich materials were obtained from some crude asphalts by gel permeation chromatography and silica gel chromatography. After extraction of each chromatographic fractions through alumina with pyridine, more concentrated metalloporphyrins were obtained. Demetallation of metalloporphyrins was possible without destroying porphyrin ring to provide different type of metal free porphyrins.
Esterification of free fatty acid with methanol to biodiesel was investigated in a batch reactor using various solid acid catalysts, such as polymer cation-exchanged resins with sulfuric acid functional group(Amberlyst-15, Dowex 50Wx8), acidic ionic liquids (ILs)-modified silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$, $SiO_2-[ASCBI][HSO_4]$) and grafted silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-R-SO_3H$, $SiO_2-R-SO_2Cl$). The effects of reaction time, temperature, reactant concentration(molar ratio of methanol to oleic acid), and catalyst amount were studied. Allylimidazolium-based ILs on modified silica gels were superior to other tested solid acid catalysts. Especially, the performance of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ (immobilized by grafting of 3-allyl-1-(4-sulfobutyl)imidazolium hydrogen sulfate on silica gel) was better than that of a widely known Amberlyst-15 catalyst at the same reaction conditions. A high conversion yield of 96% was achieved in the esterification reaction of the simulated cooking oil at 353 K for 2 h. The high catalytic activity of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ was attributed to the presence of strong Brønsted acid sites from the immobilized functional groups. The catalyst was recovered and the biodiesel product was separated by simple processes such as decantation and filtration.
This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effects of silicate and different application forms of N on the uptake of water and N by rice plants. Three rice cultivars, Ilpum, Anda and M202, were grown under the hydroponics in a phytotron. One-hundred ppm silica was applied for silicate treatment. For nitrogen application forms were 100% $NH_4$ and $NH_4+NO_3$ in 2:1 ratio were applied. Silica treatment, compared to silica free, was very effective on the nitrogen uptake and dry weight increase of rice plants. Although silica application demonstrated no significant effect on the amount of water uptake, it improved increased water and nitrogen use efficiency. Therefore, sufficient application of silicate in paddy field will be useful for the growth of rice plants and water saving.

The silica aerogels with benzene-bridged were designed to have uniform network structure, ordered pore structure, improved mechanical properties and excellent textural properties. Adding organic to enhance the mechanical properties of silica aerogels is a common method, but textural properties of aerogels with organic are reduced due to the organic-inorganic phase separation. In this paper, we use a simple and low-cost method to increase mechanical properties while maintaining textural properties of SiO2 aerogels. Two types of benzene-bridged precursors were prepared to study the effect of the number of hydroxyl band on the textural and mechanical properties. The porous silica aerogel was prepared by a simple, cost effective and pollution-free sol-gel method. This method does not require additional silylating reagents. The benzene-bridged silica aerogel samples prepared had excellent textural properties, high specific surface area (1,326 ㎡/g), porous structure and hydrophobicity (>140°). The mechanical strength of 2T4 is more than 5 times that of pure silica aerogel.
To evaluate the effects of limestone powder and silica fume on the properties of high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) blended cement concrete, this study investigated the rheology, strength development, hydration and pozzolanic reaction characteristics, porosity and pore size distribution of high-strength mortars with the water-to-binder ratio of 20, 50 to 80% GGBFS, up to 20% limestone powder, and up to 10% silica fume. According to test results, compared with the Portland cement mixture, the high-volume GGBFS mixture had much higher flow due to the low surface friction of GGBFS particles and higher strength in the early age due to the accelerated cement hydration by increase of free water; however, because of too low water-to-binder ratio and cement content, and lack of calcium hydroxide content, the pozzolanic reactio cannot be activated and the long-term strength development was limited. Limestone powder did not affect the flowability, and also accelerate the early cement hydration. However, because its effect on the acceleration of cement hydration is not greater than that of GGBFS, and it does not have hydraulic reactivity unlikely to GGBFS, compressive strength was reduced proportional to the replacement ratio of limestone powder. Also, silica fume and very fine GGBFS lowered flow and strength by absorbing more free water required for cement hydration. Capillary porosities of GGBFS blended mortars were smaller than that of OPC mortar, but the effect of limestone powder on porosity was not noticeable, and silica fume increased porosity due to low degree of hydration. Nevertheless, it is confirmed that the addition of GGBFS and silica fume increases fine pores.
A new compound named soraphinol C (1) was isolated from myxobacteria Sorangium cellulosum KM1001 a soil isolate, together with a structurally related known compound, 4-hydroxysattabacin (2). These compounds were isolated by silica gel column chromatography and recycling preparative HPLC, consecutively. The structures of the compounds were determined on the basis of combined spectroscopic analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited antioxidant activity as a radical scavenger in the experiment using a hydrophilic free-radical initiator, 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride with ORAC values of 0.956 and 0.617, respectively.
In the previous paper, it was reported that formation of desirable calcium alunimate(CA) in clinker was considerably affected by sulfur-contaminated alumina which was prone to form a disadvantageous mineral, $C_4A_3S$. In this study, however, sulphate-free alumina cement was made from sulfur-free alumina refined from alunite and corresponding materials. The major minerals in the clinker were identified by X-ray diffraction patterns as calcium aluminate (CA), calcium dialuminate $(CA_2)$ and dicalcium alumino silicate $(C_2AS)$. The formation of CA was more effective with decreasing contents of silica to 2 per cent or less and sulfur in the refined alumina. Physical properties of prepared alumina cement such as setting time, stability and compressive strength were measured. The values were similar to those of commercial alumina cements.
The authors isolated four olefinic catechols, commonly referred to as urushiol, from the sap of Korean lacquer tree(Rhus vernicifera STOKES) with stronger antioxidative activities than $\alpha-tocopherol$. The hexane extract with a free radical scavenging activity was purified by silica and ODS gel column chromatography. The active compounds were identified by MS and $^1H-NMR$ as 3-[8'(Z),11'(Z),14'-pentadecatrienyl]catechol, 3-[8'(Z),11'(Z)-pentadecadienyl]catechol, 3-[8'(Z)-pentadecenyl] catechol, and 3-pentadecylcatechol. All of these compounds showed strong free radical scavenging activities on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical, in which 3-pentadecylacatechol exhibited the highest activity ($IC_{50}$: $1.2{\mu}g/ml$). They also showed a significant inhibitory activity on lipid peroxidation ($IC_{50}$: 2.1 - 3.5 ${\mu}g/ml$). The antioxidative activity of 3-pentadecylcatechol on DPPH radical and lipid peroxidation is approximately two times greater than that of $\alpha$-tocopherol. The results suggest that the urushiol derivatices may contribute to the preservative characteristics effective against oxidative stress and could be a good source for industrial applications including a coating material.
