In this study the characteristics of chip formation of the cold drawn Bi-S free machining steels were assessed. And for comparison those of the cold drawn Pb-S free machining steel the hot rolled low carbon steel which has MnS as free machining inclusions and the conventional steels were also investigated. During chip formation the cold drawn free machining steels show relatively little change in thickness and width of chip compare to those of the conventional carbon steels. And a single parameter which indicates the degree of deformation during chip formation chip cross-section area ratio is introduced. The chip cross-section area ratio is defined as chip cross-section area is divided by undeformed chip cross-section area. The variational patters of the chip cross-section area ratio of the materials cut are similar to those of the shear strain values. The shear stress however seems to be dependent on the carbon content of the materials. The cold drawn Bi-S and Pb-S steels show nearly the same chip forming behaviors and the energy consumed during chip formation is almost same. A low carbon steel without free machining aids shows poor chip breakability due to its high ductility. By introducing a small amount of free machining inclusions such as MnS Bi, Pb or merely increasing carbon content the chip breakability improves significantly.

This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered beams with the constant surface area. The surface area of the objective beams are always held constant regardless shape functions of the cross-sectional depth. The shape functions are chosen as the linear and parabolic ones. Ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such beams are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam parameters such as section ratio, surface area ratio, end constraint and taper type are reported in tables and figures. Especially, section ratios of the strongest beam are calculated, under which the maximum frequencies are achieved.
In this study, the design of Free-Fall Simulator was carried out using concept of vertical wind tunnel. Free-Fall Simulator is not an experimental equipment but a training equipment. Therefore Free-Fall Simulator needs a large training section compared with test section of wind tunnel and has critical limit of height. These limits bring about the difficulty of design for a return passage. Due to small area ratio, the downstream flow of training section with high speed is not decelerated adequately to the fan section. High-speed flow leads to great losses in the small area ratio diffuser and corner. So design of diffusers and corners located between training section and fan section has a great effect on the Free-Fall Simulator performance. This study used an estimation method of subsonic wind tunnel performance. It considered each section of Free-Fall Simulator as an independent section. Therefore loss of one section didn't affect loss of other sections. Because losses of corner with vane and $1^{st}$ diffuser are most parts of overall Free-Fall Simulator, this study focused on the design of these sections.

In this study, the chip breaking characteristics of S, PbS and BiS free machining steels have been assessed. PbS free machining steel shows the lowest value of chip thickness ($t_c$) under the same cutting conditions. SM10C steel has the largest value of the chip cross-section area ratio ($R_{CA}$). As the feed rate becomes larger the chip breaking cycle time ($T_B$) decreases and the chip breaking index ($C_B$) increases. The properly controlled-C type chip has been obtained with the value of $C_B$ between 0.05 and 0.2. Free machining steel, PbS produces the properly controlled-C type chip in a wider feed rate range than other steels.

This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with rectangular hollow section having constant area. The differential equations governing free vibrations of arches are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with clamped-clamped, clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the shape ratio

This paper is concerned with the experimental investigation of transverse vibration characteristics in water of rectangular plates having an inner free cutout. Systematic experiments are carried out to investigate effects of the surrounding water on the added mass and the natural frequency of the plates due to the changes of the aspect ratio, hole size and eccentricity. The main subject is the clamped rectangular plate with a circular hole. For the purpose of comparative evaluations, some other common-type boundary conditions and hole shapes such as ellipses and rectangles are also investigated. Some of the results obtain are as follows; 1) For each given aspect ratio of the plate, there is a hole area ratio which gives a minimum value of the nondimensional frequency parameter for each mode. The hole area ratio increases as the order number of the mode increases. 2) The nondimensinal mass-increment parameter decreases as the aspect ration or the order number of the mode increases. For each given aspect ratio, the parameter the fundamental mode decreases monotonically as the hole area ratio increase. In cases of the second and higher order modes, however, each mode has a hole area ratio which gives a maximum value of the parameter for each aspect ratio more then 2/3. 3) Comparing elliptic holes with rectangular ones with same hole area ratio, nondimensional frequency parameters are almost same for each given ratio of the shorter axises to the longer one. 4) The influences of difference in boundary condion on nondimensional frequency parameters in water are similar to those in air.

In this work, direct contact 4-stage fluidized bed heat exchanger is experimentally studied to develop a new type of heat exchanger which recovers the energy contained in the high temperature waste gas exhausted from the industrial furnaces. A sand is used as a heat transfer medium in this experiment. To determine the optimum operating condition, 11 different perforated plates which have a different free area ratio with different hole diameter are used in the experiment. From the room temperature experiment, the pressure drop which is caused by fluidized bed formation is observed. The high temperature experiment is carried out to seek the optimum operating condition of high heat efficiency at low heat exchanger operation cost. The results of experiment are as following. The pressure drop in the high temperature condition can be predicted from the results of the room temperature experiment. And Nusselt number becomes smaller due to the increased interference between sand particles as Reynolds number increases when the dilute phase fluidized beds are formed in nigh temperature condition. But heat transfer amount through the total sand surface area become larger due to the large resident amount of sand. Considering the heat transfer amount and the heat exchanger operation cost, perforated plates which have either a 30% or 35% of free area ratio with 15mm of hole diameter are best fitted for our goal of this work. The values of .phi. which is a dimensionless number representing the absorption heat amount per unit sand rate are in the range from 0.4 to 0.5, when Reynolds number of waste gas ranges from 25-30 with these perforated plates.
Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the effect of the electroacupuncture therapy on abdominal fat deposit without diet, exercise and herbal medication. It was also designed to check the changes of free fatty acid in blood and catecholamine in urine to observe the mechanism of the electroacupuncture efficacy. Methods : 10 volunteers over 85 cm(male, 90 cm) in waist circumferences were recruited, and 10 electroacupuncture treatments were applied on their abdominal subcutaneous fat area for 4-5 weeks. We measured anthropometric factors, abdominal fat area with CT scanning, and the changes of free fatty acid in blood and catecholamine in urine before treatment and after the last treatment. Results : In this study, significant changes were shown in weight, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio, body mass index and body fat percent after the electroacupuncture therapy. There were also significant decreases of visceral fat area, visceral/subcutaneous fat area ratio in CT scanning. The blood level of free fatty acid and the urine level of catecholamine were increased after treatments, but the changes were not statistically significant. Conclusions : This study showed the efficacy of the electroacupuncture therapy on the abdominal fat deposit. But significant changes couldn't be found out in free fatty acid and catecholamine. Further studies that compensate for the limitations of this study are required to confirm the mechanism of the electroacupuncture efficacy.
Dynamic rock property is one of most important parameters in design of earthquake-resistant structures. In this study, free-free resonant column test has been conducted to obtain dynamic Young's modulus, dynamic shear modulus, and damping ratio among dynamic properties with granite specimen of Chungnam Yeongi area. The dynamic properties obtained from this test were compared with the physical properties from static rock tests, and their relationship has been analyzed. From our study, it has been concluded that the dynamic Young's modulus and the dynamic shear modulus are linearly proportional to the elastic wave velocity. And also the damping ratio has been identified to be in non-linear inverse proportion to the elastic wave velocity.
