  • Freckle is defined that it is one sort of dermatoses which appears in face, neck and the back of the hand et and is due to excess pigmentation. Likewise, Vitiligo and Cloasma belongs to dyspigmentation. Although dermatitis it self is a s1ight illness, the extent of studying dermatitis is quite extensive because it is connected direct1y with the patient's appearance. However there has not been a certain way yet. After taking into consideration of previous orienta1 medical doctor's views about freckle by refering to ten kinds of books inc1uding "Je-Bung-Won-Hu-Ron(諸病源候論)", it obtained some opinions which is about a synthetic views, and the difference in disease to discriminate about several different names, cause of disease, symptom and treatment. So it is report.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to report the effects of Korean medical treatment (acupuncture, moxibustion, herb medicine) combined with intense pulsed light (IPL) on three postpartum patients with freckles worsened during pregnancy. Methods and Results The postpartum patients with freckles were treated with acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medication and IPL. The energy density of IPL was selected modified according to skin types classified by Sasang constitutional medicine. This efficacy of treatment was evaluated with observation. After treatment, freckles as well as various postpartum symptoms are improved. Conclusions This case report shows that the Korean medical treatment combined with IPL is effective in the treatment of postpartum patient's freckles. However further studies are still necessary.

  • Anthracnose development by Colletotrichum musae was observed to be significantly less in the fruits of the banana cultivar 'Embul' (Mysore, AAB) infected with Phyllosticta musarum than in fruits without such infections. Anthracnose disease originates from quiescent C. musae infections in the immature fruit. P. musarum incites minute, scattered spots, referred to as freckles, in the superficial tissues of immature banana peel which do not expand during maturation or ripening. P. musarum does not appear to have a direct suppressive effect on C. musae as conidia of C. musae germinate on both freckled and non-freckled fruit forming quiescent infections. Our investigations have shown that P. musarum infection induced several defence responses in fruit including the accumulation of five phytoalexins, upregulation of chitinase and ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity and cell wall lignification. $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectral data of one purified phytoalexin compared closely with 4'-hydroxyanigorufone. Some of the P. musarum-induced defences that retained during ripening, restrict C. musae development at the ripe stage. This paper examines the potential of P. musarum-induced defences, in the control of anthracnose, the most destructive postharvest disease in banana.

  • Various laser systems have been widely used in almost all industrial technologies because they have high energy density, directivity and coherence. Recently the clinical application is becoming wider in medical parts such as incurable disease, diagnosis and so on. Generally, ruby laser beam has the greatest efficacy for removing tattoos, freckle and other skin problem. But current medical ruby laser system has the maximum repetition rate of 2Hz and optical output beam energy of 1J. Many medical doctors really want to have a high repetition ruby laser system because that can reduce the operation time. We investigated a new ruby laser system with high repetition rate of 4Hz using double cavities. Furthermore, we develop a new power supply system adopting zero voltage switching(ZVS) to minimize switching loss by LLC resonant converter designed as 2kW class.

  • The purpose of this study was to discover practical health problems which hemodialysis clients experienced so as to present basic data for development of a health assessment tool. The research subjects were 70 clients receiving hemodialysis in Seoul and Inchon from Mar. 1996 to Sep. 1996. Data were collected by researcher's informal indepth interview and nurses' open ended question. Content analysis was applied to collect similar contents and common experiences in order to derivate concepts and categories for better understanding of hemodialysis clients' experiences. As a result, 9 categories derivated to identify the health problems of clients receiving hemodialysis were as follows : 1) They experienced 'the decreased digestive function' which contained the changed appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea. 2) They experienced 'the decreased respiratory and circulatory function' which contained dyspnea, changed blood pressure, tingling sensation and the fear of aggrevated vascular condition. 3) They experienced 'the aggrevated oral condition' which contained dry mouth and destruction of teeth and their soft tissue. 4) They experienced 'the decreased sensory function' which contained visual disturbances, sensation difficulty, and hearing loss. 5) They experienced 'the aggrevated skin condition' which contained dark brown skin color, dry skin (and hyperpigmentatic freckle, seborrheric keratosis, scale), itching sense, and alopethia. 6) They experienced 'the decreased urinary reproductive function' which contained anuria or oliguria, dysmenorrhea, sterility and decreased libido. 7) They experienced 'the restricted activity' which contained decreased activity, muscle cramp and stiffness of joint. 8) They experienced 'the changed mental status' which contained memory disturbance, decreased cognition, disorientation, neurosis and psychosis. 9) They experienced 'the aggrevated general condition' which contained kyphosis, weight loss, fatigue, sleep disturbance, bleeding tendency, inflammation, generalized edema and foul oder of uremia.

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known to lead to oxidation of lipids, proteins, and DNA and cause skin damage. Moreover, ROS promote melanogenesis, which causes melasma, age spots, and freckle. The main compounds of the herbal medicines Poria cocas, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and Ulmus macrocarpa were reported to be parchymic acid, glabridin, and flavonoids, respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate the whitening and antioxidant effects of a mixture of P. cocas, G. uralensis, and U. macrocarpa extracts (PGUE) in B16F1 cells to develop whitening cosmetics. PGUE inhibited DPPH radicals and lipid peroxidation, in addition to high reduction power, compared with Glycyrrhiza uralensis ethylacetate extracts (GUEE). Furthermore, PGUE exhibited a protective effect against DNA oxidation induced by the hydroxyl radicals. In addition to its antioxidant activity, the inhibitory activity of PGUE against tyrosinase, which is associated with melanogenesis, was greater than that of arbutin used as a positive control. Moreover, PGUE exerted an inhibitory effect on melanin synthesis in live melanoma cells and reduced the expression levels of superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD-1) and tyrosinase related protein-1 (TRP-1). These results indicate that PGUE has skin whitening and antioxidant effects, suggesting that this mixture can be used as the main ingredient in the development of effective whitening cosmetics.
