  • A case of ovarian teratoma is reported in a 11-year-old female Korean Jindo dog. Grossly, the left ovary was markedly enlarged ($5{\times}4{\times}4 cm in size$) and contained several cystic spaces filled with hairs and yellowish, fragile deratinous material on cross section. Histological observation of the hair and keratin containing cystic structures lined by stratified squamous epithelium, mature adipose tissue, and bone and cartilage is compatible with a diagnosis of ovarian teratoma, pyometra was also present in this dog. This is believed to be the first report on canine ovarian teratoma in Korea.

  • White dwarf stars have played important roles in rather diverse areas of astrophysics. This paper outlines how these stellar remnants, especially those in widely separated "fragile" binaries, have provided unique leverage on difficult astrophysical problems such as the ages of stars, the structure and evolution of the Galaxy, the nature of dark matter and even the discovery of dark energy.

  • The appearence of organochlorine pesticide residues in some marinealgae, e.g. Sargassum thunbergii, Ulva pertusa, Codium fragile, and Enteromorpha linza, collected from various sites of Kwang Yang Bay, southern coast of Korea, was surveyed through the year from May 1974 to March 1975. The residues were found to appear in the order to July>September>May>November≒March≒January; $\alpha$-BHC>heptachlor epoxide>dieldrin>aldrin>endrin; and in the range of 0-93 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg dry matter.

  • The genus Candelaria is characterized by a micro-foliose to micro-fruticose thallus and contains eight species, two of which were reported in South Korea. During the excursion of a Korean lichen flora investigation, some suspected Candelaria concolor specimens were collected, and their morphological, chemical, molecular phylogenetic, and geographic analyses were conducted. The samples eventually proved to be a new species, Candelaria asiatica, which can be recognized by a small, yellow lobate thallus with a pulverulent surface, and a fragile lobe margin with blastidia or phyllidia-like lobules.

  • While the survival rate of preterm infants has increased dramatically over the last few decades, intraventricular hemorrhage and subsequent hydrocephalus remain major unsolved problems in neonatal intensive care. Once intraventricular hemorrhage occurs, severe neurological sequelae are inevitable. Treatment of this complicated pathology and achievement of favorable neurofunctional outcomes in fragile infants are crucial challenges for pediatric neurosurgeons. Fibrinolytic therapy, which chemically dissolves hematoma, is a promising and useful treatment method. In this paper, the historical background of fibrinolytic therapy for post-intraventricular hemorrhagic hydrocephalus in preterm infants is reviewed and a recent method of fibrinolytic therapy using urokinase is introduced.

  • Screening of anticoagulant activity was conducted for the hot water extracts of 73 kinds of medicinal herbs, 41 kinds of Korean edible plants, and 5 kinds of sea weeds using plasma recalcification test(Tr). In the first screening several extracts of the plants, Alisma calndiculatum, Corydalis ternata Panax notoginseng, Allium sativum, Ganderma luidum, Codium fragile, showed high activities. When the plants were reextracted with various solvent conditions, acidic water extracts of Codium fragile showed the highest activity in APTT. A crude polysaccharide fraction(CF-1) was prepared by methanol reflux, ethanol precipitation, dialysis and Iyophilization of the acid extracts. CF-1 comprised 80.8% total sugar consisting of arabinose, galactose and glucose as the main monomers, 8.7% protein, and 13.3% sulfate. The anticoagulant activity of CF-1 was not changed by pronase digestion, but decreased by periodate oxidation, and this indicated that the anticoagulant activity was attributed to the polysaccharide portion.

  • Currently, the environmental issue is of great urgency and sensitivity to the future of our planet. Global warming caused by increased CO2 concentration has an alarming impact on the earth's fragile environment. Droughts throughout the world are causing crop failures. Wildfires now burn with far greater rage. Melting ice caps and glaciers are causing floods. Sea levels are rising. Warm unseasonable winters are threatening our fragile eco-systems. Global warming is no longer a theory; it is an obvious fact we are confronted with every day, and the only way we can prevent it is to take action now. The need to reduce CO2 emissions and try to become carbon neutral is of national importance and leadership. We have become so reliant on fossil fuels that nearly everything we do generates CO2 emissions; from our modern farming practices to transport, to the electricity used to turn on a light, boil water in a kettle or cook our meals. A reduction of 50% of CO2 emissions can easily be achieved by decreasing the energy amount used. We tracked the carbon footprint throughout the electricity and heating energy use in homes and confirmed the amount of carbon emissions according to its consumptions. In order to reduce the carbon generation from housing constructions, such as Passive House concept of buildings or low energy buildings, we must adjust its applications best fit to our conditions. And technical elements should be applied to improve our conditions, and the methodology should be actively sought. Most of all, each individual's recongnition who uses these elements is more important than any other solutions.

  • Using a subsample of 3,409 unmarried smothers and their children from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, the present study examined the cross-lagged effects of unmarried fathers' involvement on their children's behavior problems. Father involvement was used as a latent variable to measure the frequency of fathers' visits to the child, fathers' instrumental support, and their supportive parenting. Both variables of father involvement and child behavior problems were repeatedly measured at child ages 3, 5, and 9 to estimate their trends over time. The results indicated that fathers' more active engagement in parenting at child ages 3 to 5 reduced behavior problems in children at ages 5 to 9. Further discussions include programs and services to support unmarried fathers through education and training opportunities for effective parenting, relationship skills, and conflict resolutions as well as policy strategies to encourage their continuous involvement in the lives of their children.

  • In this study, the possibility of using marine life for cosmetic materials was assessed by establishing a fermentation process of seaweed, such as Ecklonia cava, Enteromorpha prolifera, Chondria crassicaulis, Eiseniabicyclis, Codium fragile, Seaweed furcata, Gloiopeltis tenax, Grateloupia elliptica, Undaria pinnatifida, and Saccharina japonica. Lactobacillus sakei isolated from Kimchi was used for effective fermentation and whole milk powder was used as an additive. 2.0 % of crushed seaweed and 1.0 % of whole milk powder were added and afterwards, 1.0 % Lactobacillus sakei was added after cooling to $40^{\circ}C$. After cooling and filtering the fermented product, butylene glycol, glycerine, and 1,2-hexandiol, which have the effect of a preservative, were added to mix and complete the final product. Among the ten kinds of seaweeds, the process was found to be highly effective in the fermentation of Ecklonia cava, Codium fragile, Undaria pinnatifida, and Saccharina japonica. The amount of fermentable substances in cosmetics was determined and the safety of the raw material was verified using the HET-CAM (The Hen's egg test-Chorioallantoic membrane) test.
