  • This investigation evaluated the fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) of eight currently available core materials, and relate the fracture toughness value to fractography analysis and surface characteristics using a atomic force microscope (AFM). Single-edge notched (SEN) test specimens (n=10) and compact tension (CT) test specimens (n=10) were prepared conforming to the ASTM Standard E-399 for a high copper amalgam, three composite core materials (Core-Max II, Core Paste, Bisfil Core), two reinforced composite core materials (Ti-Core, Ti-Core Natural), a resin-modified glass ionomer core material (Vitremer), and a conventional glass ionomer core material (Ketac-Molar). The specimens were tested with an Instron Universal Testing Machine. The maximum loads were measured to calculate the fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$). Thereafter, fracture surfaces of SEN specimens of each material were investigated for fractography analysis using scanning electron microscope. And, disc-shaped specimens with 1mm thickness were fabricated for each material and were investigated under AFM for surface morphology analysis. The results were as follows: 1. Bisfil Core showed the highest mean fracture toughness regardless of test methods. 2. For the tooth-colored materials, Ti-Core Natural exhibited the highest fracture toughness. 3. Ketac Molar showed a significantly low fracture toughness when compared with the amalgam and the composite resin core materials(p<0.05). 4. The fracture toughness values obtained with the single-edge notched test, except Ketac Molar, were higher than those obtained in the compact tension test. 5. SEM revealed that the fracture surface of high fracture toughness material was rougher than that of low fracture toughness material. 6. AFM revealed that the surface particles of the composite resins were smaller in size, with a lower surface roughness than the glass ionomer core materials.

  • In this study, intrinsic fracture toughness of Al 7175-T74 is evaluated from the apparent toughness of notched specimen. Modified average stress model is used to establish the relationship to predict the intrinsic fracture toughness from the apparent fracture toughness of a notched-cracked specimen. The modified average stress model is established the relation between notch radius and effective distance calculated by FEM analysis. The results show that fracture toughness decreases with decreasing of notch root radius. The true fracture toughness can be predicted from test results of apparent fracture toughness measured by using notched specimen.

  • The safety evaluations of railway wheel sets make use of the static fracture toughness obtained in ingot materials. The static fracture toughness of wheelset materials has been extensively studied by experiments, but the dynamic fracture toughness with respect to wheel set materials has not been studied enough yet. It is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fracture mechanics depending on each location for a full-scale wheel set for high-speed trains, because the load state for each location of the wheel set while running is different the contact load between the wheel and rail, cyclic stress in the wheel plate, etc. This paper deals with the fracture toughness depend on load rates. The fracture toughness depending on load rate data shows that once the downward curve from quasi-static values was reached, subsequent values showed a slow increase with respect to the impact velocity. This means that dynamic fracture toughness should be considered in the design code of the wheelset material.

  • A fractal analysis on fracture surface of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was attempted. As the volume fraction of SiC in composites increases, the fractal dimension tends to increase. However, no correlation between the fractal dimension and the fracture toughness in terms of critical energy release rate was observed. Since the fractal dimension represents the roughness of fracture surface, the fracture toughness would be a function of not only fracture surface roughness but also additional parameters. Thus the applicability of fractal analysis to the estimation of fracture toughness must depend on the proper choice and interpretation of additioal paramerters. In this paper, the size of characteristic strctural unit for fracture was considered as an additional parameter. As a result, the size appeared to be a function of only volume fraction of SiC. Finally, a master curve for fracture toughness of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was proposed as a function of fractal dimension and volume fraction of SiC.

  • It is generally accepted that fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced polymer composites is affected by loading rate in an atmospheric presure condition. For a present study, the loading rate effect on the fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced laminated composites in the hydrostatic pressure condition was investigated. For this purpose, fracture tests have been conducted using carbon/epoxy composites applying three steps of the strain rate at 270 MPa hydrostatic pressure condition. The loading rates applied were 0.05%/sec, 0.25%/sec, and 0.55%/sec. Fracture toughness was determined from the work factor approach as a function of applied loading rate. The result showed that fracture toughness decreased as the loading rate increased. Specifically, the fracture toughness decreased 12% as the loading rate increased from 0.05%/sec to 0.55%/sec.

  • Fracture toughness defined near the initiation of stable crack growth is investigated by R-curve and Direct Current electric Potential Determination(DCPD) under mode I plane strain conditions for CT specimen with 25.4mm thickness of SS400 steel. Fracture toughness. $J_{IC}$lit near crack tip of CT specimen by R-curve is 17.14 $kg_{f}/mm$ and however. its value by DCPD is 22.82 $Rg_{f} mm$ The value of fracture toughness by DCPD is larger than that by R-curve. Therefore, it is suggested that the evaluation of fracture toughness by R-curve is optimum than by DCPD, when considering amount of crack growth about each of fracture toughness.

  • In this study, the effect of surface treatment of CFRP and aluminum on the fracture toughness of CFRP/aluminum composites was investigated. CFRP was surface-treated by Ar$^{+}$ ion beam under oxygen environment, and the aluminum was surface-treated by DC plasma. CFRP was adhesively bonded to aluminum using the secondary bonding procedure. Cracked lap shear specimens were used to determine fracture toughness. Three cases of cracked lap shear specimens were made depending on the surface treatment. The values of fracture toughness of three cases were compared to each other It was found that the fracture toughness of ion beam-treated CFRP/aluminum composites was almost 72 % higher than that of unrented CFRP/aluminum composites. The fracture toughness of CFRP/plasma-treated aluminum composites was 50 % higher than that of untreated CFRP/aluminum composites.s.

  • Dense $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials with various grain size were produced by sintering-HIP treatment and by gas-pressure sintering. The fracture toughness was measured by indentation fracture and indentation strength method for both ceramics with various grain size. The effect of the grain size on the fracture toughness was evaluated, and the correlation between fracture toughness and mechanical properties such as hardness, Young\`s modulus and flexural strength of these ceramic were also investigated. The highest fracture toughness of around 6.7 MPa.m(sup)1/2 was obtained in Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics with grain size of 1.58${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. With a larger grain size of $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics, the fracture toughness was generally increased. The increased fracture toughness of these ceramic also improved the flexural strength although the hardness decreased considerably. Similar results were obtained in grain size and mechanical properties on both $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials.

  • Fracture toughness was considered as one of the good estimates of the paper break tendency of paper web in the press room. Paper break on the paper machine is caused by many factors such as paper machine irregular vibrations, impurities in the fiber furnish, shives, and so on. On the paper machine, the solid content of paper web is changing very rapidly from less than 1% to over 95%. We tried to measure the fracture toughness of paper web at different solid contents for providing the fundamental knowledge of paper break. Stretches of wet web were also measured and compared to the fracture toughness changes. Four different fiber furnishes (SwBKP, HwBKP, ONP, and OCC) were refined to different degrees, and at different solid contents (40%, 60%, 80%, and 95%), their fracture toughnesses were measured. Two fracture toughness measurement methods (essential work of fracture and Tryding's load-widening method) were used, and we found they gave identical results. The stretch curves of the wet webs against the axis of solid contents were very similar to the fracture toughness curves of those.
