THE EFFECT OF SURFACE FINISHES ON FLEXURAL STRENGTH, FRACTURE TOUGHNESS OF FELDSPATHIC DENTAL PORCELAIN

  • Statement of problems. Conventional feldspathic porcelain is used extensively as a restorative material and it is subjected to grinding and polishing during fabrication and delivery procedures. There is still considerable controversy concerning the best methods to achieve the strongest porcelain restorations after such adjustments. Purpose. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of (1) overglazing, (2) selfglazing, and (3) fine polishing on the flexural strength and fracture toughness of feldspathic dental porcelain. Material and method. Ninety porcelain disks were prepared for flexural strength test and sixty porcelain disks were fabricated for fracture toughness test. Specimens were divided into three groups for each test as follows: 1) overglazed 2) self-glazed 3) polished. The flexural strength of feldspathic porcelains was determined by ring-on-ring biaxial flexural strength test. The fracture toughness values of three experimental groups were obtained by indentation fracture toughness test. Results. The flexural strength of overglazed group was significantly higher than that of selfglazed and polished group (P<0.05), while the difference between self-glazed and polished group was not significant (P>0.05). The fracture toughness values of overglazed and polished group were significantly higher than that of self-glazed group (P<0.05), while the difference between overglazed and polished group was not significant (P>0.05). Conclusions. This results supported the use of polishing as an alternative to glazing metal ceramic restorations, as it was not detrimental in flexural strength and fracture toughness. But, under the conditions of this study, overglazing was the ideal surface finishing method of feldspathic dental porcelain.

반복 사용된 IPS Empress ceramic의 물리적 성질에 관한 연구 Part IV : 경도 및 파괴인성에 관한 연구 (THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF REUSED IPS EMPRESS CERAMIC PART IV : HARDNESS AND FRACTURE TOUGHNESS)

  • Statement of the problem : IPS Empress ceramic has been used as one of a esthetic restorative material since it's development, but the broad application of IPS Empress ceramic to clinical prosthodontic field has been limited by its high material cost. Purpose : This study was investigated to evaluate the hardness and fracture toughness after recycling of the IPS Empress ceramic. Material and methods : Reused specimens of IPS Empress were fabricated with repeated pressing. The hardness(Vickers hardness) and fracture toughness of 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressed specimens were measured with Digital Micro Hardness Tester(Model MXT70, Matsuzawa Seiki Co., Ltd, Tokyo, Japan). The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS(Ver 9.5). Result : The mean value of the hardness in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressed Empress were $6.23{\pm}0.48MPa,\;5.50{\pm}0.25MPa$, and $5.70{\pm}0.42MPa$. The hardness of the 1st pressing ceramic was higher than those or the 2nd and 3rd pressed ceramics(P<0.05). Hardness of the 3rd pressed ceramic was greater than that of the 2nd pressed ceramic. but there was no significant difference of hardness between those two(P>0.05). The mean value of the fracture toughness was $1.71{\pm}0.16MPam^{1/2}$ in 1st pressed ceramic, $1.78{\pm}0.10MPam^{1/2}$ in 2nd pressed and $1.73{\pm}0.14MPam^{1/2}$ in 3rd pressed IPS ceramic. Fracture toughness of the 2nd pressed ceramic was the highest and that of the 1st pressed ceramic was the lowest. There was no significant difference of fracture toughness among them(P>0.05). Conclusion : Hardness of the 2nd and 3rd pressed IPS Empress ceramics were lesser than that of 1st pressed IPS Empress ceramic(P<0.05), but there was no significant changes of fracture toughness among them(P>0.05).

소형펀치시험법을 이용한 알루미늄 6061-T6 Type-3 용기 라이너의 파괴인성 평가 (Evaluation of Fracture Toughness Using Small Punch Test for Aluminum 6061-T6 Type-3 Cylinder Liner)

  • Type-3 용기 라이너는 두께가 5 mm일뿐 아니라 곡률을 가지고 있기 때문에 파괴인성시험을 위한 표준형 시편의 제작에 어려움이 있다. 따라서 용기 라이너의 파괴인성을 평가하기 위해서는 소형시편 시험기법이 도입되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 용기 라이너의 파괴인성을 평가하기 위해 소형펀치(small punch, SP)시험법을 도입하였다. SP시험으로부터 측정된 하중-변위 곡선 결과에서 라이너 재료는 연성이 소진하여 막신장 영역에서 파손되었다. 라이너 재료는 제작공정 특성에 기인하여 소성변형량이 방향에 따라 다름에도 불구하고 등방성 파괴양상을 보였다. SP시험 데이터를 사용하여 파괴인성을 평가한 결과 $J_{Ic}=13.0kJ/m^2$ 이었다. 이 값은 동종재료의 파괴인성 값과 유사하다. 따라서 SP시험 데이터를 사용하여 평가한 파괴인성은 타당하며, 완성된 용기 라이너는 유효한 파괴인성 값을 유지하는 것으로 확인 되었다.

초음파 파라미터와 파괴인성치의 상관관계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Correlations Between Ultrasonic Parameters and Fracture Toughness)

  • In this study the four classes of the thermally aged 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V specimens were prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method. Ultrasonic tests were performed to get the correlation with fracture toughness. The modified theoretical Vary's equation, considering nonlinear response due to material degradation, was proposed for the correlations between ultrasonic parameters and fracture toughness. Experimental results indicate that ultrasonic attenuation coefficient, velocity and nonlinear parameters produce the correlations with fracture toughness and yield strength.

비파괴적인 재료물성치 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Nondestructive Evaluation of Material Properties)

  • The nondestructive evaluation system consisted of a ball indentation tester and a ultrasonic tester was developed to evaluate material properties. The relations between the parameters from test results using the system and the results of tensile and fracture toughness tests were investigated. The fracture toughness and tensile properties could be determined using the system. Some metallic materials were experimented to predict the fracture toughness and tensile properties and verify the relations between them. The predicted fracture toughness and tensile properties show a good agreement with the results obtained by conventional tests. It is found that the material properties and the material degradation can be evaluated using the nondestructive evaluation system.

초음파법을 이용한 탄소성 파괴인성치 평가에 있어서 시험편 크기의 영향 (Effects of Specimen Size in Evaluation of Elastic-Plastic Fracture Toughness by Ultrasonic Method)

  • Elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) by ultrasonic method is evaluated in terms of width and thickness. Widths of specimen in 6061-T6 aluminum alloy are 50mm and 100mm, thicknesses of those are 20mm and 25mm, respectively. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness by ultrasonic method is independent of specimen thickness and side groove. Angle beam probe which are placed on the end of the compact specimen detect the maximum crack extension effectively. Comparing with elastic-plastic fracture toughness by ultrasonic method and that of unloading compliance method, $J_{IC}$ of ultrasonic method are underestimated to that of unloading compliance method. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness of width 100mm specimen are underestimated to that of width 50mm specimen about 20%.

  • Directional effect of applied pressure during sintering on the microstructure and fracture toughness of the heat-treated silicon nitride ceramics has been investigated. The specimens with a composition of 92Si3N4-8Y2O3(in wt%) were sintered at 172$0^{\circ}C$ by a hot press (HP ) and a hot isostatic press (HIP) and heat-treated for grain growth at 1800~20$0^{\circ}C$. The fracture toughness of the HP samples increased with the grain size while the fracture toughness of the HIP treated samples remained the same even though the grain growth occurred. This discrepancy was explained by a bimodal grain size distribution and large aspect ratio of the HPed samples and a monomodal grain size distributjion and samll aspect ratio of the HIP treated samples.

  • In this paper, an investigation was performed on the dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforcement plastics). Specimens used in this experiment are CF/EPOXY laminated plates. In this experiments, Split Hopkinson s Bar test was applied to dynamic and notched flexure test. The mode II fracture toughness of each unidirectional CFRP was estimated by the analyzed deflection of the specimen and J-integral with the measured impulsive load and reactions at the supported points. As an experimental result, the vibration amplitude of 〔$0_{10}F_4/0_{10}$〕laminates appear more than that of 〔0_{10}/F_2/0_{10}$〕laminates for the J-integral and displacement velocity at a measuring point. Also, it is thought that the dynamic fracture toughness of two kind specimen with the increase of displacement velocity becomes great at a measuring point with in range of measurement.

  • For integrity evaluation of cracked or damaged structures, fracture toughness test results in ASTM are widely used. The fracture toughness values of the structures are used as an effective design criterion in nuclear plants and aircraft structures. Sometimes the difference of P-$\delta$ curve trend during the unloading /reloading cycle in the fracture toughness test using partial unloading compliance was observed. The phenomenon as a possible source of error in determining fracture toughness may be caused by the residual stress during unloading work-hardening and bucking of a specimen. Therefore, we evaluate the effect of bucking and compressive residual stress during the K-R and J-R testing using a finite element method.

  • 본 논문에서는 17-4PH강의 동적파괴인성을 노치시편의 겉보기 동적파괴인성으로부터 평가하고자 한다. 0.1mm∼4mm의 다양한 노치반경을 갖는 시험편을 이용하였다. 임계노치반경 이상에서는 노치 반경이 증가할수록 겉보기 동적파괴인성도 증가하는 결과를 보인다. 노치시편을 이용하여 측정한 겉보기 동적파괴인성으로부터 동적파괴인성을 예측할 수 있다.
