In the present paper, a novel systematic method using the 2-D hybrid special finite elements containing an edge crack is employed to study the fracture behaviors of laser beam spot-welds in automotive structures. 2-D hybrid special finite elements each containing an edge crack can assure the high precision especially in the vicinity of crack tips and give a better description of its singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one crack. Therefore, the numerical modeling of the laser beam spot-welds can be greatly simplified. Some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the validity and versatility of the proposed method. All the lap-shear, lap-tension and angle clip specimens are analyzed and some useful fracture parameters (such as stress intensity factors, the initial direction of crack growth) are obtained simultaneously.
The size effect of axial compressive strength of concrete in notched specimens was experimentally investigated. Based on the concept of the fracture mechanics and size effect law, theoretical studies for axial compressive failure of concrete were reviewed, and two failure modes of concrete specimen under compression were discussed. In this study, experiment of axial compressive failure, which is one of the two failure modes, was carried out by using double cantilever fracture specimens. By varying the slenderness of cantilevers and the eccentricity of applied loads with respect to the axis of each cantilever, the size effect of axial compressive strength of concrete was investigated, and predicted by Bazant's size effect law. The test results show that size effect appears conspicuously for all series of specimens. For the eccentricity of loads, the influence of tensile and compressive stress at the notch tip are significant and so that the size effect is varied. In other words, if the influence of tensile stress at the notch tip grows up, the size effect of concrete increases. And the fact that the fracture process zone must be sufficiently secured for more accurate experiment was affirmed.
When a crack is produced in a concrete structure, a micro crack zone of fracture process zone (FPZ) appears at the crack tip. To investigate the behaviour of this the micro crack zone, nonlinear fracture mechanics (NLFM) must be applied. However, when a massive concrete structure such as a concrete gravity dam is considered, the micro crack zone can be neglected and the structure can be assumed to have linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) behaviour. This study is divided into two main topics : (1) Calculating stress intensity factor (SIF) at the crack tip by surface integral method and (2) Investigating the propagation of the initial crack. If the initial crack propagates, the angle of the propagation is calculated by using maximum circumferential tensile strength theory. This study, also, contains the effects of body forces and water pressures on the crack face.
The reflective photoelastic experiment can be used more effectively than the transparent type in industrial fields. Therefore the reflective photoelastic experimental hybrid method applied to the fatigue fracture problems is introduced in this research. It is verified that the reflective photoelastic experimental hybrid method is very useful on the determination of crack propagation velocity and stress intensity factor of the fatigue crack and on the separation of stress components in the vicinity of fatigue crack tip etc.
In this study behavior of fatigue crack and fatigue fracture is observed under rotary bending fatigue testing in friction welded dissimilar materials. Fatigue fracture most occurred in SM15C heat affected zone around Interface. In case of fatigue test, stress is reduced the position of fracture gradually moves to the welded Interface. Micro crack of heat affected zone surface on SM15C is observed at any different stress.
The purpose of the paper is to protect the damage of plastic IC package with searching the cause of the fracture due to the delamination and crack when the encapsulant of plastic IC package is on viscoelastic behavior with the effect of creep on high temperature, The model for analysis is the plastic SOJ package with dimpled diepad in the IR soldering process of surface mounting technology. The risk of delamination with calculating the distribution of viscoelastic thermal stress in the package without the crack in the surface mounting process is checked. The package model with the perfect delamination between chip and diepad is chosen to estimate the resistance against fracture in thermal loading with calculating C (t)-integrals according to the change of the design. The optimum design to depress the delamination and crack is presented.
Applications of bonded dissimilar materials such as metal/ceramics and resin/metal joints, are very increasing in various industry fields. It is required to find crack propagation direction and path applying to the fracture mechanics on the bonded joint of dissimilar meterials. In this paper, crack propagation direction and path were simulated numerically by using boundary element method. Crack propagation angle is able to easily determine based on the maximum stress concept. Fracture tests of Al/Epoxy dissimilar materials with an interface crack are carried out under various mixed mode conditions by using the specimens of bonded scarf joints. It is found that the experimental results are well coincide with the analysis results of boundary element method.
Thermal shock resistance of $Al_2O_3$- and Fe-$Al_2TiO_5$-based Castable Refractories was studied using a central heating technique. Ring type specimens, 10mm thick and 20 and 100mm inner and outer diameters, respectively, were rapidly heated on the internal surface of the centre hole using a high power electrical heating element. The temperature field was measured experimentally and modelled using finite element analysis (FEA). The thermal stress field was also modelled using FEA. A radial notch was introduced to the ring specimens to enable calculation of the thermal stress intensity factors (SIF). A special LVDT device was incorporated in the thermal shock tester to monitor crack mouth opening displacement (COD). The thermal shock fracture initiation and crack propagation behaviour of the castable refractories were ascertained using the COD measurements and the fracture mechanics analysis data.
Hertzian contact tests were used to investigate the evolution of fracturedamage in the coating layer as functions of contact load and coating thickness by studying crack patterns in porcelain on glass-infiltrated alumina bilayer system conceived to simulate the crown structure of a tooth. Cone cracks initiated at the coating top surface without delamination at interface and crack propagation to substrate. Preferentially the cracks made multi-cracks at the coating top surface rather than proceeding to interface. The cracks were highly stabilized with wide ranges between the loads to initiate first cracking and to cause final failure im-plying damage-tolerant capability. Finite element modelling was used to evaluate the stress distribution. Maximum tensile stress were responsible for the cracking at the coating layer and had a profound influence on the crack pattern and fracture damage in the layered structure materials.
This paper proposed the method of fracture integrity evaluation for semi-elliptical crack. Plane strain fracture toughnesses are used to compare with the thermal shock stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical crack obtained by Vainshtok weight function method. The method is applied to the finite Cr Mo V and 2.25Cr Mo steel plates with semi-elliptical crack under the thermal shock. For the purpose, tensile property and fracture toughness with respect to the temperature are measured. To verify the method, thermal shock experiments are carried. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experiments.
