Thermosetting matrix composites have disadvantages in terms of moulding time, repairability and manufacturing cost. Thus the high-performance thermoplastic composites to eliminate such disadvantages have been developed so far. As a result of environmental and economical concerns, there is a growing interest in the use of thermoplastic composites. However, since their mechanical properties are very sensitive to the environment such as moisture, temperature etc., those behaviors need to be studied. Particularly the temperature is a very important factor influencing the mechanical behavior of thermoplastic composites. The effect of temperature have not yet been fully quantified. Since engineering applications of reinforced composites necessitate their fracture mechanics characterization, work is in progress to investigate the fracture and related failure behavior. An approach which predicts the tensile strength was perpormed in the tensile test. The main goal of this work is to study the effect of temperature on the result of tensile test with respect to GF/PE composite. The tensile strength and failure mechanisms of GF/PE composites were investigated in the temperature range $60^{\circ}C\;to\;-50^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength increased as the fiber volume fraction ratio increased. The tensile strength showed the maximum at $-50^{\circ}C$, and it tended to decrease as the temperature increased from $-50^{\circ}C$. The major failure mechanisms was classified into the fiber matrix debonding, the fiber pull-out, the delamination and the matrix deformation.
Intra-type alumina-based nanocomposites, in which second-phase nanoparticles are embedded within alumina grains, use dislocation activities to enhance strength and fracture toughness. The dislocations are generated around the nanoparticles by residual stresses during cooling process. In this paper, first, we explain strengthening and toughening mechanisms of alumina-based nanocomposites based on dislocation activities. Second, we propose a soaking method to construct the intra-type nanostructure and fabricate alumina/nickel and alumina/silver nanocomposites. The nanocomposites are then annealed in order to enhance the fracture toughness of the materials. Finally, we discuss the relation between the strength, fracture toughness, and critical frontal process zone size of the materials.
The fatigue life tests were performed in strain control with triangular and hole-time wave-forms at $650^{\circ}C$. The fatigue lifes were investigated according to waveform examining damage mechanisms, which could be used to predict the fatigue life and estimate the remaining life. The results obtained are as follows; The fatigue lifes were in order of the fast-fast>the fast-slow>the slow-fast in the triangular waveforms, and the fatigue lifes in slow-fast waveforms got shorter in the hold-time waveforms. The damage mechanisms of the fracture surfaces were transgranular fracture in the fast-fast, the fast-slow waveforms and intergranular fracture in the slow-fast waveform.
The critical strain energy release rate and the failure mechanisms of glass-carbon epoxy resin hybrid composites are investigated in the temperature range of the ambient temperature to 8$0^{\circ}C$. The direction of laminates and the volume fraction are [(+45, -45, 0, 0) sub(2) ] sub(s), 50%, respectively. The major failure mechanisms of these composites are studied using the scanning electron microscope for the fracture surface. Results are summarized as follows: 1) The critical strain energy release rate shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up. 2) The critical strain energy release rate increases as the content of glass increases, and especially shows dramatic increase for the high glass fiber content specimens. 3) Major failure mechanisms can be classfied such as localized shear yielding, fiber-matrix debonding, matrix micro-cracking, and fiber pull-out and/or delamination.
Fracture Mechanics does work for concrete, provided that a finite nonlinear zone at fracture front is being considered. The development of model for fracture process zone is most important to describe fracture phenomena in concrete. The fracture process zone is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, in which two major mechanisms, microcracking and bridging, play important rules. The toughness due to bridging is dominant compared to toughness induced by microcracking, so that the bridging is dominant mechanism governing the fracture process of concrete. In this paper the bridging zone, which is a part of extended macrocrack with stresses transmitted by aggregates in concrete, is model led by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with linear tension-softening curve. Two finite element techniques are shown for the model of fracture process zone in concrete.
Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments have brought a big step toward "efficient" practice of endodontic procedure. The rotary files help clinicians to reduce their working time and also increase the clinical success rate with minimal procedural errors. However, NiTi instruments still have a few drawbacks including unpredictable fatigue fracture. Clinicians may reduce the potential risk of instruments fracture by following some clinical guidelines for rotary instruments. In some clinical cases of instruments fracture, we may try to remove the instruments' fragments or bypass the fragment to reach the apical canal. In some limited cases, the fractured instruments' fragments would not jeopardize the clinical prognosis of root canal treatment. Nevertheless, it is impossible to be overemphasized that the prevention of file fracture is much easier than the removal of fracture fragment. Clinicians need to understand the fracture mechanisms and, in clinic, need to discard the used instruments timely.
In this paper, static and fatigue bending strengths and failure mechanisms of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates having impact damages have been evaluated. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CF/EPOXY orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces $[0^0_ 4/90^0_4]_{ sym}$. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages. The damage growth during bending fatigue test is observed by the scanning acoustic microscope (SAM) and also, the fracture surfaces were observed by using the SEM (scanning electron microscope). In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is propagated from the transverse crack generated near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-B delamination in the case of impacted-side tension. Eventually, failure mechanisms have been confirmed based on the observed delamination areas and fracture surfaces.

In this paper the intrinsic influence of micron-sized nickel particle reinforcements on microstructure, micro-hardness tensile properties and tensile fracture behavior of nano-alumina particle reinforced magnesium alloy AZ31 composite is presented and discussed. The unreinforced magnesium alloy (AZ31) and the reinforced nanocomposite counterpart (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$/1.5 vol.% Ni] were manufactured by solidification processing followed by hot extrusion. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the nickel particle-reinforced magnesium alloy nano-composite was higher than both the unreinforced magnesium alloy and the unreinforced magnesium alloy nanocomposite (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$). The ultimate tensile strength of the nickel particle reinforced composite was noticeably lower than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy (AZ31). The ductility, quantified by elongation-to-failure, of the reinforced nanocomposite was noticeably higher than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy. Tensile fracture behavior of this novel material was essentially normal to the far-field stress axis and revealed microscopic features reminiscent of the occurrence of locally ductile failure mechanisms at the fine microscopic level.
Woven fabrics composites are used as primary structural components in many applications because of their superior properties that offer high specific strength and stiffness. However, the complexity of the fabric structure makes understanding of their failure behavior very difficult. Also, laminate woven fabrics CFRP have unique failure mechanisms such as fiber bridging, fiber/matrix crack and so on. In particular, the delamination phenomenon of the composite materials is one of the most frequent failure mechanisms. So, we estimated interlaminar fracture and damage in composites using as ENF specimen by a 3 point bending test. And AE characteristics were examined for crack propagation on plain woven CFRP. We obtained the following conclusions from the results of the evaluation of the 3 point bending fracture test and AE characteristic estimation. AE counts of maximum crack length were obtained as $85.97{\times}10^4\;and\;93{\times}10^3\;for\;a_0/L=0.3$ and 0.6, respectively. Also the maximum amplitudes were over 80dB at both $a_0/L=0.3\;and\;0.6$. $G_{IIc}$ at that's $a_0/L$ ratio were obtained with $1.07kJ/m^2\;and\;3.79kJ/m^2$.
Fracture analysis of human bone is necessary to predict the failure of musculoskeletal structures and to heal them by several possible mechanisms under different loading conditions. But human bone is a complex material, with a multiphase, heterogeneous and anisotropic microstructure. Due to the difficulty of obtaining experimental and clinical results, the importance of numerical analysis and computational simulations in biomechanics are increasing gradually. In this study, stress analysis for human femur model is performed by using the 2-dimensional finite element method(FEM) and its stress distribution is determined. From these results, the fracture mechanic parameters are calculated and the fracture criteria on human femur are investigated and discussed.
