  • Purpose : To evaluate the effect of surgical treatment of ligature-induced peri-implantitis in dogs using fractal analysis. Also, the capabilities of fractal analysis as bone analysis techniques were compared with those of histomorphometric analysis. Materials and Methods : A total of 24 implants were inserted in 6 dogs. After a 3-months, experimental periimplantitis characterized by a bone loss of about 3 mm was established by inducing with wires. Surgical treatment involving flap procedure, debridement of implants surface with chlorhexidine and saline (group 1), guided bone regeneration (GBR) with absorbable collagen membrane and mineralized bone graft (group 2), and $CO_2$ laser application with GBR (group 3) were performed. After animals were sacrificed in 8 and 16 weeks respectively, bone sections including implants were made. Fractal dimensions were calculated by box-counting method on the skeletonized images, made from each region of interest, including five screws at medial and distal aspects of implant, were selected. Results : Statistically significant differences in the fractal dimensions between the group 1($0.9340{\pm}0.0126$) and group 3($0.9783{\pm}0.0118$) at 16 weeks were found (P<0.05). The fractal dimension was statistically significant different between 8($0.9395{\pm}0.0283$) and 16 weeks in group 3 (P<0.05). These results were similar with the result of the evaluation of new bone formation in histomorphometric analysis. Conclusions : Treatment of experimental peri-implantitis by using $CO_2$ laser with GBR is more useful than other treatments in the formation of new bone and also the tendency of fractal dimension to increase relative to healing time may be a useful means of evaluating.

  • New very low bit rate segmentation image coding technique is proposed by segmenting image into textually homogeneous regions. Regions are classified into on of three perceptually distinct texture classes (perceived constant intensity (class I), smooth texture (class II), and rough texture (class III) using the human Visual System (HVS) and the fractals. To design very low bit rate image coder, it is very important to determine nonoverlap and overlap segmentation method for each texture class. Good quality reconstructed images are obtained with about 0.10 to 0.21 bit per pixel (bpp) for many different types of imagery.

  • This paper suggests techniques to enhance coding time which is a problem in traditional fractal compression and to improve fidelity of reconstructed images by determining fractal coefficient through adaptive selection of block approximation formula. First, to reduce coding time, we construct a linear list of domain blocks of which characteristics is given by their luminance and variance and then we control block searching time according to the first permissible threshold value. Next, when employing three-level block partition, if a range block of minimum partition level cannot find a domain block which has a satisfying approximation error, There applied to 24-bpp color image compression and image techniques. The result did not occur a loss in the image quality of the image when using the encoding method, such as almost to the color in the RGB image compression rate and image quality, such as gray-level images and showed good.

Next, when employing three-level block partition, if a range block of minimum partition level cannot find a domain block which has a satisfying approximation error, we choose new approximation coefficients using a non-linear approximation of luminance term. This boosts the fidelity. Our experiment employing the above methods shows enhancement in the coding time more than two times over traditional coding methods and shows improvement in PSNR value by about 1-3dB at the same compression rate.

  • The relation between the aerodynamic diameter and some morphological parameters was studied for flame-generated aggregates. $SiO_{2}$ aggregates were generated from $SiCl_{4}$ in premixed methane/air flames. These aggregates were sampled and classified according to their aerodynamic diameter by a cascade impactor; moreover, computer program was developed and tested to find the equivalent area diameter and the fractal dimension of the aggregates. We calculated the parameters from the digitized images of the aggregate TEM micrographs. The aerodynamic diameters of the sampled aggregates were larger than $0.4{\mu}m$ in this experiment. In most cases, fractal dimension of their projection image was very close to 2.0 for these large aggregates. It was found that the equivalent area diameter of these aggregates was approximately three times larger than the Stokes' diameter of them.

  • Growth of Electrical Tree Under 50Hz~60Hz high electric stress has been studied on the Occurrence of a Pattern, to the Progression Speed at Y axis of electrical Tree. CCD Images of evolving tree structures could be obtained in both systems. Electrical Treeing was found to occur reproducibly, but in a markedly different manner in the two morphologimlly different but chemically identical materials. For the measurement of Electrical Tree, a visual measurement with an optical microscope has been used to explain breakdown mechanism in High-voltage systems.

  • Chaos theory is a study researching the irregular, unpredictable behavior of deterministic and non-linear dynamical system. The interpretation using Chaos makes us evaluate characteristic existing in status space of system by tine series, so that the extraction of Chaos characteristic understanding and those characteristics enables us to do high precision interpretation. Therefore, This paper propose the new method which is adopted in extracting character features and recognizing characters using the Chaos Theory. Firstly, it gets features of mesh feature, projection feature and cross distance feature from input character images. And their feature is converted into time series data. Then using the modified Henon system suggested in this paper, it gets last features of character image after calculating Box-counting dimension, Natural Measure, information bit and information dimension which are meant fractal dimension. Finally, character recognition is performed by statistically finding out the each information bit showing the minimum difference against the normalized pattern database. An experimental result shows 99% character classification rates for 2,350 Korean characters (Hangul) using proposed method in this paper.

  • In video coding at high compression rate, factal compression schemes in spatial domain have outstanding blocking artifacts and compression schemes in wavelet transform domain have rinfing artifacts at edges. In order to compensate these disadvantages, we propose a fractal video coding in wavelet transrorm domain which leads to clear edges without blocking atrifacts even at high bompression rate. The proposed method performs variable block sized motion estimation by using correlation among different subbands. Then the wavelet coefficients which are not enoded dffectively by the motion estimation are compressed by inter-frame fractal coding which predicts fine scale subbands hierarchically from the next coarser scale subbands. Computer sumulations with sev-eral test images wequences show that the proposed method shows better performance than the conventional video coding methods using fractal and wavelet.

  • The fractal image compression partitions an original image into blocks of equal size and searches a do-main block having self-similarity. This method of compression achieves high compression ratio because it is unnecessary to transmit the additional codebook to receiver and it provides good quality of reconstructed images. In spite of these advantages, this method has a drawback in which encoding time increase due to a complicated linear transformation for determining a similar-domain block. In this paper, a fast fractal image compression method is proposed by decreasing the number of transformation usings AC(alternating current) coefficients of block. The proposed method also has a good quality as compared with the well-known fractal codings. Furthermore, method also has a good quality as apply the video steganography that can conceal an important secret data.
