Study for improvement of grounds subjected to cyclic loads

  • Due to rapid industrialisation, large scale infrastructure development is taking place worldwide. This includes railways, high speed highways, elevated roads etc. To meet the demands of society and industry, many innovative techniques and materials are being developed. In developed nations like USA, Japan etc. for railways applications, new material like geocells, geogrids are being used successfully to enable fast movement of vehicles. The present research work was aimed to develop design methodologies for improvement of grounds subjected to cyclic loads caused by moving vehicles on roads, rail tracks etc. Deformation behavior of ballast under static and cyclic load tests was studied based on square footing test. The paper presents a study of the effect of geo-synthetic reinforcement on the (cumulative) plastic settlement, of point loaded square footing on a thick layer of granular base overlying different compressible bases. The research findings showed that inclusion of geo-synthetics significantly improves the performance of ballasted tracks and reduces the foundation area. If the area is kept same, higher speed trains can be allowed to pass through the same track with insertion of geosynthetics. Similarly, area of machine foundation may also be reduced where geosynthetics is provided in foundation. The model tests results have been validated by numerical modeling, using $FLAC^{3D}$.

토질제체의 Piping 파괴에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Piping Failure of Earth Embankment)

  • 토질제체 설계시 piping에 대한 대책으로 현재에 적용되고 있는 creep비는 원래 Masonry 또는 콘크리트 댐의 저면과 기초지반토질과의 접촉면에 따른 침투에 의한 piping의 방지를 위한 기준이었다. 본 연구에서는 이 creep비가 토질로 형성된 제체에서도 적용될 수 있는지의 여부를 모형실험을 통하여 구명하고 현행 creep비기준을 재평가 하였다. 연구결과 토질제체에서 발생되는 piping파괴는 토질제체와 기초지반과의 확측면에서는 발생하 지 않았으며 토질종류에 관계없이 제체내에서만 발생하였다. 따라서 제체를 형성하는 토질과 기초 지반토질중 투수계수가 적은 토질을 기준으로 creep비를 정하는 현재의 설계기준은 불합리함을 알 수 있었다.

Usage of coot optimization-based random forests analysis for determining the shallow foundation settlement

  • Settlement estimation in cohesion materials is a crucial topic to tackle because of the complexity of the cohesion soil texture, which could be solved roughly by substituted solutions. The goal of this research was to implement recently developed machine learning features as effective methods to predict settlement (Sm) of shallow foundations over cohesion soil properties. These models include hybridized support vector regression (SVR), random forests (RF), and coot optimization algorithm (COM), and black widow optimization algorithm (BWOA). The results indicate that all created systems accurately simulated the Sm, with an R2 of better than 0.979 and 0.9765 for the train and test data phases, respectively. This indicates extraordinary efficiency and a good correlation between the experimental and simulated Sm. The model's results outperformed those of ANFIS - PSO, and COM - RF findings were much outstanding to those of the literature. By analyzing established designs utilizing different analysis aspects, such as various error criteria, Taylor diagrams, uncertainty analyses, and error distribution, it was feasible to arrive at the final result that the recommended COM - RF was the outperformed approach in the forecasting process of Sm of shallow foundation, while other techniques were also reliable.

모형실험을 통한 사질토 지반에서의 무리말뚝 거동에 대한 상부기초 접촉 효과 연구 (An Experimental Study of the Effect of Pile Cap on Behaviors of Group Piles)

  • In case that pile cap is in direct contact with underlying soil, the bearing mechanism for pile groups, including direct bearing effect of cap and its induced influence on pile-soil-cap interaction, should be properly considered. In this paper, the effects of pile caps on behaviors of pile groups in sandy soils were investigated by model tests, which consist of tests on 3 by 3 pile groups with/without contact on subsoil, single pile with/without contact and cap as a shallow foundation. Also, the influences of pile spacing in group piles on contact effects were investigated. The test results showed that the load carrying capacity of pile cap was large enough not to be ignored. However, the interaction effects due to contact between cap and subsoils were not revealed obviously in working load range. And in the design of pile groups, the bearing effect of pile cap when contacted with subsoils, can be reflected by simply summing up load settlement behaviors of each cap and group piles without contact.

  • This paper proposes the shaking table testing method, without any soil specimen only using building model as an experimental part, considering dynamic soil-structure interaction based on the substructure method. The two-layered soil is assumed as a soil model of the entire soil-structure interaction syhstem(SSI) in this paper. Differently from the constant soil stiffness, the frequency-dependent dynamic soil stiffness is approximated for the case of both acceleration and velocity feedback, respectively. The interaction force is observed from measuring the accelerations at superstructure. Using the soil filters corresponding to the approximated dynamic soil stiffness, the shaking table drives the acceleration or velocity, which the needed motion to give the building specimen the SSI effects. Experimental results show the applicability the proposed methodologies to the shaking table test considering dynamic soil-structure interaction.

  • The global and domestic market for offshore wind farm is expected to grow fast, and the design and installation of substructure and foundation is getting more important. As for the offshore wind farms located in the shallow(depth < 20m) water, the construction and installation of the substructure and foundation makes up about 1/4 ~1/3 of the offshore wind farm construction cost, and the portion is expected to increase because the turbine capacity is increasing from 2 ~ 3MW to 5MW or larger and the water depth of wind farms is also increasing over 30m. As a foundation for offshore wind turbine, the suction caisson foundation is being considered to be a highly competitive alternative to the conventional monopile or gravity based structure, because it has features suitable for the offshore construction such as quick installation, no heavy equipment for penetration and no hammering noise for driving. In order to study the installation behaviour of the suction caisson, laboratory tests were performed with sand. The pore water pressure and displacement were measured to analyze the suction pressure during penetration, the penetration speed and the amount of heaving.

점토지반에 근입된 송전철탑 연결형 말뚝기초의 저항력증가계수 (Resistance Increasing Factor of Connected-pile Foundation for Transmission Tower in Clay)

  • 연약지반에 건설되는 송전철탑 말뚝기초는 부등침하로 인한 철탑구조체의 손상을 유발 할 수 있다. 이에 따라 일본과 미국에서는 철탑을 지지하는 각 기초부를 연결보로 연결한 연결형기초의 사용을 추천하고 있다(TEPCO 1988, IEEE 2001). 연결형 말뚝기초의 저항력증가계수는 연결체의 영향으로 인하여 증가되는 연결형 말뚝기초의 저항력의 증가량을 나타낸다. 본 연구에서는 점토지반에 근입된 송전철탑 연결형말뚝 기초의 모형수평재하시험을 수행하여 연결형 말뚝기초의 저항력증가계수를 도출하였다. 본 시험은 실트질 점토지반에서 수행되었으며, 수평하중의 재하높이와 재하각도, 말뚝기초를 연결하는 연결체의 강성을 변화시켜 다양한 조건상에서의 저항력 증가계수를 도출하였다. 본 연구에서 도출된 저항력 증가계수는 송전철탑의 하중작용높이와 기초를 연결하는 연결체의 강성에 대한 함수로 나타났으며, 도출된 증가계수를 통하여 연결형 말뚝기초의 저항력을 산정한 결과 측정결과와 비교적 일치하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • Piled raft foundations are usually used to reduce total and differential settlements of superstructures. In the piled raft foundations, the raft is often on its own able to provide adequate bearing capacity and only few widely spaced piles are added to the foundation to keep settlements be1ow a certain limit. In this paper, experimental studies on the load sharing ratio between piles and raft are carried out. Also, for evaluating the application of optimum design technique using a genetic algorithm, optimal locations of files are compared with the results of laboratory model tests. from tile results of laboratory model tests, there are found that the load sharing ratio between files and raft is depended on the number of piles and stiffness of raft, and the optimal locations of piles became concentrated on the middle of rafts. From these results of laboratory model tests, the optimum technique using a genetic algorithm is acknowledged to the application in the piled raft.

  • 도로하부에 대한 현장에서의 역학적인 거동에 대한 이해는 교통기반시스템의 장기공용성을 예측하는데 매우 중요하다. 이러한 현장거동에서 지반재료에 대한 회복변형 거동 정량화는 교통하중과 환경조건을 고려한 역학적인 해석이 필수적이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 한국도로공사 시험도로에서 현장자료의 계측과 분석을 통하여 선택된 도로하부 입상재료에 대한 구성방정식을 활용한 비선형 재료거동과 응력을 예측 분석하고 이를 현장자료와 비교하고 검증하였다.

  • 본연구는 Cap model을 사용하여 유한요소법에 의한 기기지반의 변형해석을 하려는 연구의 일환으로 이루어진 것이다. Cap model에 의한 수치해석을 하기 위해서는 구성식과 결합될 여러가지의 사질재료의 매개변수를 결정해야 한다. 본문은 이와 관련하여 Zaman등 (1982)이 검토한 바 있는 Pueblo Colorado모래의 실내삼축시험자료를 이용하여 매개변수를 전산처리하여 결정하는 방법을 검토하고 이를 보다 더 쉽게 이용할 수 있는 알고리즘을 연구하는 과정에서 엄밀삼축시험(Truley TC)인 일반삼축려축시험 (CTC), 정수압축시험(HC), 감탄삼축인장시험(RTE)의 결과가 매개변수를 결정하는데 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 알아보기 위하여 가중치를 적용하여 매개변수의 변화과정을 검토한 것이다. 그 주요 결업는 다음과 같다. 1) 토금매개변수(E,v,Z)는 사용하는 시험자료에 관계없이 같은 값이. 2) 한편 변수는 사용하는 자료에 따라 달라진다. 3) 변고결정에 있어서 가중치는 거의 영향을 미치지 않는다.
