  • Purpose: To provide basic informations for guidelines of Ginseng usage during lactation. Method: Based on a regulation of scope and preparation of herbal prescriptions by Ministry of health and welfare of Korea, we selected the formulae for postpartum care and disease in 7 Korean Medical Classics. And we searched the number of formulae including Ginseng, dosage and indications of Ginseng in formulae in those books. Results: The range of Ginseng dosage during lactation from medical classics is 1.5-18.75g/day for medical purposes. Indications of Ginseng are lethargy, excessive bleeding, asthma, fever, cold, pain, dizziness, mental disorder, spasm, digestive problem, constipation, diarrhea, urinary incontinence, edema, breast engorgement, lack of breastmilk, breast ulcer, etc. But Ginseng had not been used in the case of stroke, epistaxis, beginning of mastitis, tumor of lower abdomen. Conclusions: Ginseng should be recommended less than 1.5g/d as a nutritional supplement. If breastfeeding woman wants to take Ginseng as a medication or as a tonic, she should consult with a official specialist about proper prescription and dosage instead of risky random medication.

  • The research on the confinement behavior of ultra high performance concrete without and with the use of steel fibers (UHPC and UHPFRC) has been extremely limited. In previous studies, authors experimentally investigated the axially compressive behavior of circular steel tube confined concrete (STCC) short and intermediate columns with the employment of UHPC and UHPFRC. Under loading on only the concrete core, the confinement effect induced by the steel tube was shown to significantly enhance the utimate stress and its corresponding strain of the concrete core. Therefore, this paper develops a simplified stress - strain model for circular STCC columns using UHPC and UHPFRC with compressive strength ranging between 150 MPa and 200 MPa. Based on the regression analysis of previous test results, formulae for predicting peak confined stress and its corresponding strain are proposed. These proposed formulae are subsequently compared against some previous empirical formulae available in the literature to assess their accuracy. Finally, the simplified stress - strain model is verified by comparison with the test results.

  • Since at least the late 12th century, medical herbs grown naturally or cultivated in Korea have been referred to as 'HyangYak'(鄕藥, $Xi\bar{a}ngY\grave{a}o$). Herbs from other countries are referred to as 'DangYak'(唐藥, $D\bar{a}ngY\grave{a}o$). Some senior historians claim medicines made solely from HyangYak are purely Korean, since they originated and were developed fully within Korea. However, these localized medicines became abundant as the result of exchanges between Korea and other countries. Originally published in 1433, 'HyangYakJipSungBang' is the authoritative result of earlier writings of medical books using HyangYak. Comprised of a total of 85 volumes, it was large in scale and divided into three main sections: 1) a detailed description of the 703 kinds of HyangYak, 2) explanations of the 10,706 different herbal formulae and 959 types of symptoms or diseases, and 3) descriptions of the 1,416 various acupuncture and moxibustion formulae. It's noted that 'HyangYakJipSungBang' was not written all at once. In the process of its writing, the number of formulae increased through medical exchanges between Korea and China during the 15th century.

  • Functional school planning has long been considered a fundamental concept of school design. However. in planning educational facilities, it is also important to include the dimensions of comfort, convenience and healthfulness. The school lavatories and drinking fountains are one of most crucial elements for the recent changing face in healthful school design, but the number of lavatories and drinking fountains in most schools may not be sufficient to meet current needs. This study aims to suggest a guideline in designing school sanitary fixture and propose the optimal number of lavatories and drinking fountains regarded to age and sex. The survey is conducted through questionnaires collected from 998 respondents including 300 teachers In ChungNam province. Based on the results of the survey and a formulae, it is suggested that the number of lavatories be required by ratio of 30 boys per unit fixture and 22 girls per unit fixture in the elementary, middle and high school. It is also suggested that the number of drinking fountains be required by ratio of 65 students per unit fixture. The formulae proposed in this paper can be used for other plumbing fixtures required in school facilities.

  • A double-skinned composite tubular (DSCT) column, which consists of concrete and inner and outer tubes, was finally developed to overcome the weaknesses of concrete filled tube columns by reducing the self-weight of the column and confining the concrete triaxially. Research pertaining to the stiffness and strength of the column and the confining effect in a DSCT column has been carried out. However, detailed studies on the confining stress, especially the internal confining stress in a DSCT column, have not been carried out. Internal and external confining stresses should be evaluated to determine the effective confining stress in a DSCT column. In this paper, the confining stresses of concrete before and after insertion of an inner tube were studied using finite element analysis. The relationship between the internal or external confining stresses and the theoretical confining stress was investigated by parametric studies. New modified formulae for the yield and buckling failure conditions based on the formulae suggested by former researchers were proposed. Through analytical studies, the modified formulae were verified to be effective for economic and reasonable design of the inner tubes in a DSCT column under the same confining stress.

  • Fundamental combustion characteristics, such as the combustion potential, burning velocity and flame stability, for the practical utilization of LFG(Landfill gas) and LFG-blended fuels were experimentally investigated. The combustion potentials(CP) of LFG-blended fuels calculated from the previously suggested formulae were compared with burning velocities obtained by present experiments. The results showed that the previous formulae fur CP of LFG-blended fuels were not agreed with the experimental burning velocity, and these formulae should be revised. To provide an useful information needed to design the combustion devices, a triangular diagram was suggested for the maximum burning velocity of the mixture of CH$_4$, LPG and LFG. From the investigation of the burning velocity and the flame stability in a practical combustor, it was noted that the LFG-blended fuels, of which heating values or Wobbe indices were adjusted to that of natural gas, could be used as an alternative fuel of natural gas.

  • In this study, the added resistance of ships in short waves is systematically studied by using two different numerical methods - Rankine panel method and Cartesian grid method – and existing asymptotic and empirical formulae. Analysis of added resistance in short waves has been preconceived as a shortcoming of numerical computation. This study aims to observe such preconception by comparing the computational results, particularly based on two representative three-dimensional methods, and with the existing formulae and experimental data. In the Rankine panel method, a near-field method based on direct pressure integration is adopted. In the Cartesian grid method, the wave-body interaction problem is considered as a multiphase problem, and volume fraction functions are defined in order to identify each phase in a Cartesian grid. The computational results of added resistance in short waves using the two methods are systematically compared with experimental data for several ship models, including S175 containership, KVLCC2 and Series 60 hulls (CB = 0.7, 0.8). The present study includes the comparison with the established asymptotic and empirical formulae in short waves.

  • To test flavonoids for antibacterial activity against oral micraorganisms, flavonoids, quercetrin and naringenin, were incorporated into two pharmaceutical preparations in the form of tooth paste. Samplees of dental plaque, the msot accused dental deposit which initiates the gingival and periodental diseases, were collected from the teeth surface of ten dental students at one week interval before and after using placebo, followed by two formulae of tooth paste containing 0.1% of quercetrin and naringenin (formulas I and II, respectively). The amount of dental plaque was assessed by the quigley and Hens index. Then plaque samples were subjected to bacteriological examination of Gram stain and plate counts of microorganisms. The amount of dental plaque was assessed by the Quigley and Hens index. Then plaque samples were subjected to bacteriological examination of Gram stain and plate counts of microorganisms. The results revealed that most of Gram negative cocci and bacilli were highly affected by the two formulae : the number of actinomycetes were decreased after using formula I and disappeared completely by the sue of formula II, while the number of Gram positive streptococci was highly decreased after the treatment with the two formulae. These results indicate a possible use of flavonoids to inhibit dental plaque formation.
