  • This review was written to introduce updated data on the structure and function of the major milk proteins identified as allergens, the characterization of their epitopes in each allergenic milk proteins, and the reduction of milk protein allergenicity. Most mammalian milk protein, even protein present at low concentration, are potential allergens. Epitopes identified in milk proteins are both conformational(structured epitope) and sequential epitopes(linear epitope), throughout the protein molecules. Epitopes on casein and whey proteins are reported to be sequential epitope and conformational epitopes, respectively. Conformational epitopes on whey protein are changed into sequential epitope by heat denaturation during heat treatment. Several methods have been proposed to reduce allergenicity of milk proteins. Most ideal and acceptable method to make hypoallergenic milk or formula, so far, is the hydrolysis of allergenic milk proteins by enzymes that has substrate specificity, such as pepsin, trypsin, or chymotrypsin. Commercial formulas based on milk protein hydrolysate are available for therapeutic purpose, hypoantigenic formula for infants from families with a history of milk allergy and hypoallergenic formula for infants with existing allergic symptoms.

  • The inflence of hydrophilic vehicles on percutaneous absorption rate of griseofulvin was studied using intact skin of full thickness of hairless rat. The in vitro absorption rates were used as the characteristics for deciding the optimum formula of ointment vehicles. The optimum formula of vehicle compositions for maximum absorption rate was obtained from the polynomial regression equation and the two graphical techniques, contour graph and partial derivative graph. It was composed of sodium lauryl sulfate (1.65 W /W%), white petrolatum (16.5 W /W%), propylene glycol (12.0 W /W%), and stearyl alcohol (19.6W /W%). The experimental value obtained from the optimum formula and the prediction value were 33.99 and 33.87 ${\mu}g/\sqrt{min}$, respectively. From these results, it was believed that optimum formula for semisolid dosage forms could be obtained from the application of the optimization technique used in this study.

  • In geodesy, a calculation of the meridian length is a basic thing. Its principle is very simple, but no exact closed formula exists and its expression has rather long terms. In Korea, the formula has been seemingly adapted from those of Japan which also use the Bessel ellipsoid as a reference. However, a formula from a noticeable reference of Japan is found to have wrong coefficient values. In this study, a formula for the meridian length with correct coefficient values is suggested and the results on different computing bases are also shown. This formula has terms simpler than the one in the Korean Surveying Act (Law) which has the same coefficients in that Japanese reference.

  • Plunging breaker slamming pressures on vertical or sloping sea dikes are one of the most severe and dangerous loads that sea dike structures can suffer. Many studies have investigated the impact forces caused by breaking waves for maritime structures including sea dikes and most predictions of the breaker forces are based on empirical or semi-empirical formulae calibrated from laboratory experiments. However, the wave breaking mechanism is complex and more research efforts are still needed to improve the accuracy in predicting breaker forces. This study proposes a semi-empirical formula, which is based on impulse-momentum relation, to calculate the slamming pressure due to plunging wave breaking on a sloping sea dike. Compared with some measured slamming pressure data in two literature, the calculation results by the new formula show reasonable agreements. Also, by analysing probability distribution function of wave heights, the proposed formula can be converted into a probabilistic expression form for convenience only.

  • The present study investigated the validity of an equilibrium shoreline empirical formula for real phenomena. Among three types of equilibrium shoreline formulas, Hsu's parabolic type static formula was employed, which is well-known and the most practical for shoreline estimation after coastal or harbor structure construction. The wave data observed at Maengbang beach and the CERC formula on longshore sediment transport were used in the present investigation. A comparison study was only conducted for the case of a shoreline change after the construction of a groyne. Reasonable agreement was seen between the observed wave data and the data obtained under a wave angle spreading function S = 3.5. However, significant changes were observed when S increased. Thus, careful application is required when using Hsu's formula.

  • The regional rainfall intensity formula for Gimhae in Gyeongsangnam-do province is developed in this study. The nine points of rainfall observations were selected. In order to demonstrate the accuracy and the versatility of the proposed rainfall intensity formula, three regions under the jurisdiction of the Meteorological Agency near Gimhae, namely Busan, Changwon, Miryang observatories were selected. The present formula can be effectively employed for various design of hydraulic structures in Gimhae area since it is divided into several refined regions.

  • In analysis of pipelines or pipe network we calculated the friction loss using Hazen-Williams or Manning formula approximately, or found one by friction coefficient from Moody diagram graphically. The friction coefficient is determined as a function of relative roughness and Reynolds number. But the calculated friction coefficient by Hazen-Williams or Manning formula considered roughness of pipe or velocity of flow. The friction coefficient in Darcy-Weisbach equation was obtained from the Moody diagram. This method is manual and is not exact from reading. This paper is presented numerical solution of Colebrook-White formula including variables of relative roughness and Reynolds number. The suggested subroutine program by an efficient linear iteration scheme can be applied to any pipe network system.

  • The frequency analysis of annual maximum rainfall data and the derivation of probable rainfall intensity formula at Masan station are performed in this study. Based on the eight different rainfall duration data from 10 minutes to 24 hours, eight types of probability distribution (Gamma, Lognormal, Log-Pearson type III, GEV, Gumbel, Log-Gumbel, Weibull, and Wakeby distributions), three types of parameter estimation scheme (moment, maximum likelihood and probability weighted methods) and three types of goodness-of-fit test (${\chi}^2$, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramer von Mises tests) were considered to find an appropriate probability distribution at Masan station. The Lognormal-2 distribution was selected and the probable rainfall intensity formula was derived by regression analysis. The derived formula can be used for estimating rainfall quantiles of the Masan vicinity areas with convenience and reliability in practice.

  • The phenomena of local scour due to a current from a seadike closure gap which is protected by rock, then on to an erodible bed, have been studied. Based on the data of hydraulic model test, the scour characteristics have been investigated for the variation of maximum scour depth with time until reaching equilibrium stage and the shape of ultimate scour hole. A brief evaluation of DHL formula for the relationship between maximum scouring depth and time and a dimensionless form leading to time-scale introduced. On the basis of DHL formula, modified DHL formula denoted DHL-RDC formula is extend to the range of estimation of scour depth compared to DHL formula verified by model test.

  • In this paper, the magic formula model was applied for a friction damper in a drum-type washing machine. To describe characteristics of the hysteretic damping force, Physical tests were first carried out to get experimental results using an MTS machine. Then, parameters for the magic formula model were determined from the experimental curves. The ADAMS and MATLAB programs were used for the multibody modeling of the damper and process for parameter identification. The model of drum-type washing machine was applied for a dynamic model of friction damper, in which the accuracy of the proposed damper model was verified.
