Quantitative Study on the Forms and Distributions of Gapyoungchon Potholes (가평천 포트홀의 형태 및 분포에 관한 정량 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of forms and distributions of Gapyoungchon potholes. Different sizes of 153 potholes were distributed in the upper stream marginal area that was 30×25m, and over 70 percent among them were egg-shaped potholes. A development of joint in pothole was not important to make potholes in the stream but the mean size of potholes with joint was larger than without joint. Moreover, the schistosity structure of the bedrock was more important factor to develop potholes in this area. Finally, four cross sectional faces were found in this study area. From the reason, Gapyoungchon potholes are distributed on the rock terraces.

Analysis on pothole landforms at Naerin River in Inje-gun (인제군 내린천의 포트홀 지형 분석)

  • The geomorphic properties of potholes at Naerin River, Inje-gun are analyzed to discover the geosites of DMZ geopark in Gangwon-do. The furrow-type potholes along the river flow are mainly found in the P1 and P2 sites. The P3 site can be divided in to the zones where the furrow-type potholes densely distribute and various types of potholes are scattered, while the various types of small potholes are scattered in the P4 site. After measuring the 44 potholes, the potholes with a U-shaped cross-section, similar directivity with river flow and deposited gravels with in them show large values in length, width, depth and slope. Because the P1 and P2 sites are characteristic in the scales and forms of potholes and show beautiful scapes, it can be suggested that they are suitable for the geosite developments.

Topographical Analysis of the Potholes in Jakgwaecheon Stream in Ulsan (울산 작괘천의 포트홀에 관한 지형분석)

  • This report is based on the investigation of potholes which are formed by fluvial erosion. A pothole is called so because it is a hole that looks like a coffeepot. The results of previous studies are applied to the 'Jakgwaecheon Porthole' of this study. The study is focused on the dimension and morphology of the Pothole and investigates the effects of stream sediments, river flow, geological structural lines, etc. on the formation of potholes. As a result of measuring 61 potholes in this area, we recognized that the elliptical dish-shaped cross sections are dominant and inferred that their longitudinal direction on the plain is affected by the direction of the stream flow. Also, 'Jakgwaecheon Pothole' is very characterized in terms of scale and morphology. Furthermore, it is harmonious with the beautiful landscape, humanity, and historical values and it can be suggested that it is qualified to be registered as a geoheritage structure.

A review and new view on the study on minor erosional forms in bedrock channels in Korea (한국의 기반암 하상 침식 지형 연구)

  • Minor erosional forms in the bedrock river, like potholes, are not just research subject for the professional geomorphologis. In addition, these features attract general public and make them understand the social contribution and importance of geomorphologic research activities. In this paper, the studies on bedrock minor forms in Korea was reviewed. For further researches, some of major erosional processes and minor forms in bedrock rivers were discussed in detail. Cavitation, plucking, hydro-wedging, and abrasion by passing sediment particles are the major processes to create the longitudinal or transverse minor forms like pothole, furrows, flutes, and runnels. Especially the definition of furrows and runnels are explained to prevent the confusion with pothole, weathering pits and grooves. To make a progress in research on bedrock minor forms the quantitative relationship between the variables should be studied. New techniques for scientific estimation of erosion rates and exposure ages of bedrock surfaces should be used in this field.

A study on the bedrock erosional forms at Dutayeon, Yanggu (양구 두타연 인근 지역의 기반암 하상지형 연구)

  • Satae cheon, a tributary of the Suip cheon in Yanggu, Gangwon province, is an international river extended to North Korea. Most of drainage basin area of the river was the fierce battle field during the Korean War(1950-1953) and hard to access as it located between the MDL(Military Demarcation Line) and the CCZ(Civilian Control Zone: about 10km south from MDL). By the restriction of access to the sites, most of natural landscape have been well conserved except limited use for military activities. Even the landfoms in that area were not studied, except the government's heritage reports. Satae Cheon's channel follows the Imdang fault line(N-S) to Satae-ri and flow to west to the Dutayeon area. The river meanders along geological structure or weak line at the Dutayeon area. The meandering channel was shorten by the meander cut which linked the thalweg line of meander loop ant the meander neck. As a result of this cut, the river cliff formed by the Satae cheon became the part of newly formed channel bed and the S-forms are formed. After the channel route stabilized, channel incised the rock with large potholes and undulating walls were formed. The channel width changes from 1m to 10m with restriction of the undulating walls, so this part can be regarded as inner channel or inner gorge. From the point of planar forms it also can be slot-type canyon.

A study on the relationship between Schmidt Hammer's 'R' and bedrock microforms (기반암 하상 미지형과 슈미트 해머 반발 값과의 관계에 대한 연구)

  • Physical strength of the rock is the most important factor of resistance to erosion and has been measured through various way. Bedrock microforms, like potholes and grooves, are the forms sculpted by the erosional processes of flow and the location and morphology are strongly affected by the differential erosion. It also assumed that the physical strength of the rock controls the erosion rate and mode of erosion. The schmidt hammer has been used to measure the rock strength in the field for the geomorphological research. To find the relationship between the rock strength and microforms, Schmidt hammer's R(rebound) were measured in the Baeksuktan, middle reach of Gilancheon, Cheongsong, Gyungsangbuk do. The overall values of rebound of the local sandstone showed over 65 in most cases, so it can be regarded as 'very strong'. It is found that the rebound values of the rock surface decreased towards current water level. It also, however, found that there was no systematic differences in rebound values among the topographically high and lows in the bedrock surface. There was no statistically significant difference in rebound values of the area with well developed microforms and others. The values of R from the exposed faces and inside of the microforms are similar. In the case of conglomerate, the part with the gravel showed higher values that the parts with sands. The rebound values are decreased near of(<1cm) the geological discontinuities(including joint and faults), so this line of weakness could be the point of initiation of active erosion to form microforms. However there is large variations in rebound values within this part. It also should be mentioned that topological relation between the strike of the geologic discontinuities and flow direction looks control the mode of erosional processes.
