  • We conducted the survey about the avian fauna, population, community and correlation between avian population and densities of the fallen rice grain in Cheonsu reclaimed area(Ganwol and Bunam Lake and reclaimed land) from Oct. 2006 to Mar. 2007. Total surveyed species number was 142 species, sum of maximum count of each species was 362,797 individuals, sum of average count of each species was 84,818 individuals. Comparing with early and late wintering season, number of species was stable in each survey time, but total population was decreased as the season progressed. Dominant species were Bean Geese Anser fabalis, Baikal Teals Anas formosa, White-fronted Geese Anser albifrons, Mallards Anas platyrhynchos and Pintails Anas acuta. Population fluctuation of the Bean Geese Anser fabalis, Baikal Teals Anas formosa, Mallards Anas platyrhynchos, PintailsAnas acuta was decreasing, but population of the White-fronted Geese Anser albifrons was stable. Number of species, total population were not significantly different among Ganwol, Bunam and Cheonsu Bay. Survey period was significantly correlated with species diversity and population in each area, and most community indices of each area were shown significant correlation. The density of the fallen rice grain was significantly different between the harvested rice paddy by big harvesting machine and small harvesting machine. Density of the fallen rice grain in stubble collected area was significantly different with area of stubble not collected. Density of the fallen rice grain was drastically decreased in the middle of wintering season, but not significantly different between Dec. 2006 and Feb. 2007. Avian population was strongly correlated with number of fallen rice grain in the same period.

  • Chemical characteristics and physiological activities of plums (Oishiwase and Formosa) were evaluated. Proximate composition of plums consisted of (w/w) 1.9-6.2% protein, 2.3-7.1% fat, 3.5-4.1% ash, and 84,1-88,7% carbohydrate. Organic acids, such as oxalic, malic, succinic, and acetic acids were detected, except in Oishiwse acetic acid was not detected. Free sugars consisted of sorbitol, glucose, fructose and sucrose. Total fiber and total phenolics compounds of plum rind were higher than those of flesh. Electron-donating abilities of rind ethanol extracts were higher than those of BHA and tocopherol, and were twofold higher than those of flesh extracts. Nitrite-scavenging abilities of rind and flesh extracts were significantly higher (over 97%) at pH 1.2 and 3.0. Tyrosinase-inhibitory activities ranged 88.5 to 100%. SOD-like activities of all extracts were weak at 22.7 to 27.2%.

  • Phytoplankton populations were examined at three sites in Lake Cheongpyeong, South Korea from March 2008 to December 2016, including measurement of phytoplankton communities and their dominant species, abundance and environmental factors. The annual average ranges of water temperature, dissolved oxygen and conductivity were $15.2-18.8^{\circ}C$, 10.3-12.2 mg/L, $86-140{\mu}S/cm$, respectively, with similar values at all studied sites. The highest phytoplankton cell density was observed in spring and fall, and it subsequently decreased rapidly during heavy rainfall. Diatoms were dominant in spring (mainly Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Asterionella formosa) and fall (mainly Aulacoseira granulata), while greenalgae and cyanobacteria had high appearance in early-summer and summer, respectively, indicating that water temperature is the most important factor influencing their growth. Stephanodiscus hantzschii and Asterionella formosa frequently occurred at low water temperature ($4.5-15.0^{\circ}C$ and $5.4-21.6^{\circ}C$, respectively) while Aulacoseira granulata and Anabaena spp. were favored by high water temperature (8.6-28.4 and $14.9-26.2^{\circ}C$, respectively) and phosphorus. Additionally, Fragilaria crotonensis occurred at low nutrient conditions. Rhodomonas spp. frequently appeared year-round.

  • In order to determine the physiolosical characteristics of plum fruits(Oishi wase) during maturation and guilty according to temperature after harvest, (2-chloroethyl) phosphonic acid(ethphon) 390ppm was sprayed on plum tree 11days before commercial matuarity in Suwon area. And also this study was acted to investigate fruits quility(Formosa) influenced by temperature(room, low) and polyethylene films(0.03, 0.06, 0.1mm), 1. Effect of ethphon on the fruits maturation and fruits(Oishi wase) quility according to temperature ofter harvest. Ethephon stimulated fruits ripening but the firmness was reduced rapidly. Soluble solids and titratable acidity was not very different than each treatment. Carbon dioxide and ethylene production were advanced and the production peak were shown earlier by ethephon treatment as compared with control fruit. Anthocyanin development was enhansed rapidly by ethephon treatment but it exerted a bad influence on fruits color after harvest, The soluble sugars in fluits were mainly glucose, sucrose, and fructose. Those content were higher in treated fruit than control. The organic acid was mainly malic acid. The shelf life was less than about 5days at room temperature and about 10 days at low temperature. 2. Fruits(Formosa) quility as affected by polyethylene film bagging. The polyethylene films well maintained the firmness both room and low temperature. Low temperature was more effective in maintaining titratable acidity than room temperature, especially polyethylene films. On the Other hand, soluble solids content was not shown wide differance between room and low temperature. Polyethylene film showed a high resperation rate, the rate was higher at room temperature than low temperature and thicker films revealed higher rate. Otherwise, ethylene production was low in all treatment Polyethylene film inhibited the coloration of fruits, decreased anthocyanin content. Fruits coloration delayed by low temperature in control. The shelf life of plum fruits was about 6 days at room temperature and 13 days at low temperature in control Polyethylene film had no advantage on shelf life both at room and low temperature.

  • This study focused on patterning waterbirds occurrences at the western costal area of the Korean Peninsula in winter and relating the occurrence patterns with their environmental factors. Waterbird communities were monitored at 10 different study areas, and the composition of land cover as environmental factors was estimated at each study area. Overall dabbling ducks were the most abundant with 84% of total individuals, followed by shorebird and diving ducks. Species Anae platyrhynchos was the first dominant species, and Anas formosa was the second one. Self-organizing map (SOM), an unsupervised artificial neural network, was applied for patterning wintering waterbird communities, and identified 6 groups according to the differences of communities compositions. Each group reflected the differences of indicator species as well as their habitats.

  • Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni is the causal agent of bacterial black spot disease on some stone fruits, e.g. peach, plum and apricot. To evaluate pathogenicity of Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni strain from plum, inoculum of the isolated strain was spray inoculated to fruits and leaves of apricot, Japanese apricot and plum. Apricot and Japanese apricot showed severe black spot symptoms on fruits and shot hole symptoms on leaves. In case of apricot, about fifty percent of fruits did not grow and dropped by hypersensitive reaction to spray infection. Plum, cv. Formosa was very susceptible, showing severe black injury lesions on fruits and cankers on leaves and new twigs. On the other hand, plum cv. Daesukjosaeng, was highly resistant. Fruits of several plum cultivars such as Formosa and Chuhee were severely infected at natural infected orchards by X. arboricola pv. pruni. Where as those of Daesukjosaeng, Taeyang, Soldam and Hongrogen were moderately infected.

  • In this research, a cohort of two children, aged 7-8 years, was selected to participate in a specialized three-week training program aimed at enhancing their working memory. The program consisted of three sessions, each lasting approximately 30 minutes. The primary goal was to investigate the impact and developmental trajectory of working memory in school-aged children. Working memory plays a significant role in young children's learning and daily activities. To address the needs of this demographic, products should offer both educational and enjoyable activities that engage working memory. Digital educational tools, known for their flexibility, are suitable for both older individuals and young children. By updating software or modifying content, these tools can be effectively repurposed for young learners without extensive hardware changes, making them both cost-effective and practical. For example, memory training games initially designed for older adults can be adapted for young children by altering images, music, or storylines. Furthermore, incorporating elements familiar to children, like animals, toys, or fairy tales, can increase their engagement in these activities. Historically, working memory capabilities have been assessed predominantly through traditional intelligence tests. However, recent research questions the adequacy of these behavioral measures in accurately detecting changes in working memory. To bridge this gap, the current study utilized electroencephalography (EEG) as a more sophisticated and precise tool for monitoring potential changes in working memory after the training. The research findings were revealing. Participants showed marked improvement in their performance on n-back tasks, a standard measure for evaluating working memory. This improvement post-training strongly supports the effectiveness of the training program. The results indicate that such targeted and structured training programs can significantly enhance the working memory abilities of children in this age group, providing promising implications for educational strategies and cognitive development interventions.

  • Fruit drop is a serious problem in plum trees during fruit development after pollination and fertilization. In order to increase fruit yields, physiological fruit drop in plum trees at the early stages of fruit development must be reduced. In this study, the effect of gibberellic acid paste (GA paste 2.7%) applied on 'Formosa' plum was determined to reduce fruit drop. GA paste was applied one time on one set of the fruit stalk at 3 days after full bloom (DAFB), and on another set of the fruit stalk at 13 DAFB, and then the fruit-set rate was observed at 70 DAFB. GA paste application increased the fruit-set rate up to 61%. In 'Formosa', the time of GA application had a strong influence on reducing fruit drop. GA application increased the fruit-set rate up to 61% in treatments at 3 DAFB, and to 15% in treatments at 13 DAFB when the fruit-set rate was 5% in the control group. The same results were observed in 'Honey Red' and 'Akihime' plums. GA application impacted on fruit enlargement in the 'Formosa' cultivar, compared with the control trees, which had no GA application. The rate of fruit enlargement with GA application was similar to that of the control fruits until 70 DAFB, whereas the enlargement rate was slightly higher in the GAtreated trees than the control from 70 DAFB until harvest. In GA-treated fruit, fruit weight increased more than in the control, while total acidity and firmness was lower than in the control group. Additionally, GA application accelerated sucrose increase in maturing fruit. Our data indicated that GA paste application can reduce fruit drop, and subtly promote fruit enlargement and maturation in plum trees.
