  • In this study, it is investigated that the effect of material properties such as various temperature, forming speed and strain rates on formability and forming limits of Mg alloy sheet in square cup deep drawing. Since the sheet metal forming of Mg alloy is perform at elevated temperature, the effect of strain rates related with the forming temperature and forming speed is very important factor for formability and forming limits. Therefore, the investigation for process variables is necessary to improve formability and forming limits. Also, the effects of strain rate and thickness transformation were studied by the experimental and FE analysis using the square cup deep drawing. • This paper presents an analytical study that can predict the path-dependent forming limits for bilinear strain paths. To predict the forming limit diagrams(FLD), the analytical procedure was performed within the framework of Marciniak and Kuczynski approach by introducing the effect of the existence of strain gradient over the stretching punch. The predicted path-dependent forming limits of an anisotropic sheet were compared with the published experimental results. It was found that the predicted path-dependent forming limits were in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Most failures of ductile materials in metal forming processes occurred due to material damage evolution - void nucleation, growth and coalescence. In this paper, the modified yield function of Liao et al in conjunction with the Hosford's yield criterion is studied to clarify the plastic deformation characteristic of voided anisotropic sheet metals. The void growth of an anisotropic sheet under biaxial tensile loading and damage effect of void growth on forming limits of sheet metals are investigated. Also the characteristic length defining the neck geometry is introduced in M-K model to incorporate the effect of triaxial stress in necked region on forming limits. The forming limits theoretically predicted are compared with experimental data. Satisfactory agreement was obtained between the predictions and experimental data.

  • The forming limits are studied for cold upsetting of high strength aluminium alloy in the present paper. Different geometry ratio and frictional conditions are investigated in the forgeability test to evaluate the forming limits and also to obtain the various strain paths. The critical fracture value can be obtained by integrating along the strain path till free surface crack initiation. To predict the damage evolution of cold upsetting, the computer-aided evaluation of forming limits is obtained by using the finite-element software DEFORM-3D and the modified Cockcroft-Latham criterion. The predicted theoretical limit strains agree quite well with the experimental results.

  • Identification of forming limits of sheet metals is an important task to be done before the sheet metal forming processes. The information of the forming limit is indispensable for design of deformed shapes and related forming processes. This procedure becomes more important than ever as the auto-body becomes complicated and the number of auto-body parts is reduced for lower production cost. To identify the forming limit of sheet metals stretching with a hemispherical punch has gained popularity because of the convenient experimental procedure. The stretching experiment however has localized deformation or the shear band is originated from the non-unifrom deformation in the critical circum-stance instead of the absolute criterion. More accurate information of the forming limit therefore could be obtained by a more appropriate experiment to the real process. In this papaer an experiment program is devised to practivally identify the forming limits of sheet metals for auto-body parts. The experiment program contains not only stretching but deep-drawing Both forming experiments use the same hemispherical punch while they use different specimens. Deep-drawing experiments use speci-mens cut out in circular arc on both sides of circular blank to make it torn during the deep-drawing They also use speciments cut out straight in one side of a circular blank to make it deformed unevenly which causes local deformation during the deep-drawing. The experimental result demonstrates that the forming limit diagrams in the two cases show difference in their effective magnitude. The forming limit curve from deep-drawing is located lower than that from stretching. It is noted from the result that the deep-drawing process causes acceleration of localized deformation in comparison with the stretching process. From the experimental result the maximum value of forming limit could be pre-dicted for safe design.

  • The current study aims to predict the forming limits considering the deformation characteristics of tailor rolled blank(TRB) during hot stamping. The formability of TRB is affected by the TRB line orientation because elongations change due to the intrinsic geometry within the sheet. To evaluate the forming limits, Nakazima tests were conducted at elevated temperatures with different TRB line orientations. Forming limit diagrams(FLD) of TRB can be predicted by an interpolating equation based on the Nakazima test. Predicted FLDs were used in FE-simulations of a rectangular drawing. The predicted limit drawing height was compared with experimental results. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental ones with an error range of 3%.

  • Recently social demands of fuel economy and environmental regulations require the development of light materials and new manufacturing technologies. In this point, the aluminum tube hydroforming process which is satisfied with good strength-to-weight ratio and recyclability is innovative concept. However the level of the aluminum tube hydroforming technology is low in comparison with that of steel tube hydroforming. In this paper, the hydroformability of aluminum tubes in different heat treatments is presented. Theoretical results for forming limits of the wrinkling and bursting are compared with experimental results of aluminum tubes.

  • The automotive industry has recently shown a growing interest in tube hydroforming. Even though many structural parts in automotives have been produced from the cylindrical tubes, many failures - wrinkling, buckling, folding back, bursting and so on - are frequently experienced during the tube hydroforming process under improper forming conditions. In this paper, analytical studies are performed to determine the forming limits for the tube hydroforming process and demonstrate how the loading path influences the forming limit. The theoretical results for the forming limits of the wrinkling and bursting are then compared with the experimental results for an aluminum tube.

  • An experimental study has been performed to investigate the forming characteristics of pre-coated metals(PCMs) widely used in domestic appliances through Erichsen tests and deep drawing tests. Erichsen tests are performed to find out the forming limits of seven pre-coated metals in normal conditions. Rectangular deep-drawing tests are carried out to know the effects of die materials and blank metals on forming loads and surface defects of final PCM products. In the deep-drawing test, four die materials [STD11(TiCN), STD11, STD11(TD), AMPCO] are used. In the Erichsen test, the forming limits of PCMs are obtained from flaking or crack of pre-coated films and lower than those of base metals. In respect of surface roughness and forming load, STD11(TD) and AMPCO materials are superior to my other die-materials used in the deep-drawing test.
