  • Acrylate-terminated poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromer was prepared by the reaction of PEG with acryloyl chloride. Photopolymerization of PEG macromer resulted in the formation of cross-linked PEG network. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on PEG and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was obtained via template polymerization of AA to the PEG network by UV curing. The swelling degree of the IPNs hydrogel increased with an increase of pH value due to the association-dissociation between carboxylic acid of PAA and either of PEG through hydrogen bounding. The swelling-deswelling behavior proceeded reversibly for the IPNs upon changing pH. Release of indomethacin from the IPNs demonstrated "on-off" regulation with pH fluctuation.

  • Simple ways to build up mixed-metal molecules which can act as potential single-source precursors to multimetallic oxides are reviewed. Emphasis is given to Lewis acid-base reactions between metal alkoxides M(OR)/sub n/, and between metal alkoxides and more accessible oxide precursors, carboxylates M(O₂CR)/sub n/ and β-diketonates M(β-dik)/sub n/. Characterization of the precursors is achieved in the solid state (single crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR) and by multinuclear NMR in solution. The reactions proceed toward the formation of aggregates in which the different metals display their usual coordinations numbers, often six for transition metals, as shown. Strategies for fixing the stoichiometry between the metals are developed. The reactivity of the MM species (dissociation, effects of chemical modifiers, of other metallic species, hydrolytic or non-hydrolytic condensation, etc.) will be indicated. Transformations into oxides are illustrated on precursors for titanates or niobates.

  • A prerequisite for the development of graphene-based field effect transistors (FETs) is reliable control of the type and concentration of carriers in graphene. These parameters can be manipulated via the deposition of atoms, molecules, and polymers onto graphene as a result of charge transfer that takes place between the graphene and adsorbates. In this work, we demonstrate a unique and facile methodology for the homogenous and stable p-type doping of graphene by hybridization with ZnO thin films fabricated by MeV electron beam irradiation (MEBI) under ambient conditions. The formation of the ZnO/graphene hybrid nanostructure was attributed to MEBI-stimulated dissociation of zinc acetate dihydrate and a subsequent oxidation process. A ZnO thin film with an ultra-flat surface and uniform thickness was formed on graphene. We found that homogeneous and stable p-type doping was achieved by charge transfer from the graphene to the ZnO film.

  • The Gutmann acceptor number(AN), solvatochromic parameters $({\alpha},{\beta}\;and\;{\pi}^{\ast})$ and hydrogen bonding equilibrium constants (KHB) were determined for three binary systems of methanol with 1,2-dimethoxyethane(DME), 1,2-dichloroethane(DCE) and pyridine (PYD). The solvolysis rate constants of t-butyl chloride, bromide and iodide were also determined in the three binary systems. Solvent properties and solvolysis rates have been discussed in the light of various solvent parameters. Solvolysis of t-butyl halides are most conveniently explained by the two-stage mechanism involving ion-pair intermediate with the ion-pair formation for chloride and ion pair dissociation for iodide as rate limiting.

  • Tetracarbonylhydridoferrate, $HFe(CO)^-_4$, generated by the reaction of $Fe(CO)_5$ with alkaline solution, is a good reducing agent for mono-dehalogenation of gem-dihalocyclopropanes. It also acts as a good reducing catalyst under phase transfer reaction conditions. 1,1-Dibromo-2-phenylcyclopropane and 1,1-dichloro-2-phenylcyclopropane were reduced to the corresponding mono-dehalogenated products in excellent yields. Thermodynamically stable trans-l-bromo-2-phenyl cyclopropane was formed as the major product over the cis-isomer, trans/cis=3/2. The 1-bromo-2-phenyl cyclopropane radical intermediate was formed by single electron transfer from $HFe(CO)^-_4$. Dissociation of bromide anion, followed abstraction of hydrogen radical from alcoholic solvent would lead to the formation of the stable trans-isomer. The further mechanistic aspects were discussed.

  • Acid catalyzed hydrolysis of 1-phenoxyethyl propionate, Ⅰ, has been studied using the PM3 method in the gas phase. The first step of the reaction is the protonation of basic sites, three different oxygens in Ⅰ, producing three protonated species Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ. All possible reaction pathways have been studied from each protonated structure. Changes in the reaction mechanisms have also been discussed from the results obtained by varying a nucleophile from a water monomer to a water dimer to a complex between one water molecule and an intermediate product (propionic acid or phenol) produced in the preceding unimolecular dissociation processes. Minimum energy reaction pathway is 2-W among the possible pathways, in which water dimer acts as an active catalyst and therefore facilitates the formation of a six-membered cyclic transition state. Lower barrier of 2-W is ascribed to an efficient bifunctional catalytic effect of water molecules. PM3-SM3.1 single point calculations have been done at the gas-phase optimized structure (SM3.1/PM3//PM3) to compare theoretical results to those of experimental work.

  • Crosslink is the most important chemistry in a rubber vulcanizate. Degree and type of crosslinks of the vulcanizate determine its physical properties. Change of crosslink density and deformation of a rubber vulcanizate by thermal aging were studied using natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates with various cure systems (conventional, semi-EV, and EV) and different cure times (under-, optimum-, and overture). All the NR vulcanizates were deformed by the thermal aging at 60-100 $^{\circ}C.$ The higher the aging temperature is, the more degree of the deformation is. The undercured NR vulcanizates after the thermal aging were deformed more than the optimumand overcured ones. The NR vulcanizates with the EV cure system were less deformed than those with the conventional and semi-EV cure systems. The deformation of the NR vulcanizates was found to be due to change of the crosslink density of the vulcanizates. The crosslink densities of all the vulcanizates after the extraction of organic materials were also changed by the thermal ging. The sources to change the crosslink densities of the vulcanizates by the thermal aging were found to be dissociation of the existing sulfur crosslink and the formation of new crosslinks by free sulfur, reaction products of curing agents, and pendent sulfide groups.

  • The reaction of $IrClH_2(CO)(Ph_3P)_2$ ($Ph_3P$=triphenylphosphine) with acrylonitrile (AN) produces a stoichiometric amount of propionitrile (PN) at $100^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen, which suggests that the catalytic hydrogenation of AN to PN with $IrCl(CO)(Ph_3P)_2$ proceeds through the hydride route where the formation of the dihydrido complex, $IrClH_2(CO)(Ph_3P)_2$ is the initial step. The rate of the hydrogenation of AN to PN with $IrCl(CO)(Ph_3P)_2$ is decreased by the presence of excess $Cl^-$ in the reaction system, which suggests that $Cl^-$ is the dissociating ligand in the catalytic cycle. It has been also found that the rate of the hydrogenation increases with inercase both in hydrogen pressure and in concentration of free $Ph_3P$, and with decrease in AN concentration in the reaction system.

  • The fine structure branching ratio and Doppler profiles of photofragment Cl ($^{2}P_{j}$) atoms from photodissociation of CINO around 236 nm in the A band have been measured by the two photon resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization technique. The measured branching ratio, $Cl^{\ast} (^{2}P_{1/2})/Cl (^{2}P_{3/2})$ is $0.18{\pm}0.02$. The Doppler profile of Cl is well reproduced assuming that one of the two components in the photofragment translational spectra reported by Haas, Felder, and Huber [Chem. Phys. Lett., 180, 293 (1990)] should correspond to Cl and that an anisotropy parameter $\beta$ for the angular distribution is 0.45. The results suggest that CINO dissociation in the A band should consist of at least two non-crossing electronic states which correlate to the formation of $Cl^* and Cl, respectively.

  • Biomolecular phase separation has recently attracted broad interest, due to its role in the spatiotemporal compartmentalization of living cells. It governs the formation, regulation, and dissociation of biomolecular condensates, which play multiple roles in vivo, from activating specific biochemical reactions to organizing chromatin. Interestingly, biomolecular phase separation seems to be a mainly passive process, which can be explained by relatively simple physical principles and reproduced in vitro with a minimal set of components. This Mini review focuses on our current understanding of the fundamental principles of biomolecular phase separation and the recent progress in the research on this topic.
