Phenolic resin wastewater contained 41,000 mglI phenol, 2,800 mg/l fonualdehyde and various chlorinated phenolic compounds. Candida tropicalis PW-51 isolated [rom the natural enVlfooment was able to degrade 1,000 mg/l phenol in the presence of 100 mglI formaldehyde, but it took much time to degrade phenol with the increase of formaldehyde in phenolic resin wastewater. %en the phenolic resin wastewater was diluted to 1/40, the initial concentration of phenolic compounds (phenols) was 882 mglI and degraded to 81 mglI by C tfVpicalis PW-51 in batch culture. In a continuous biological treatment, the phenolic resin wastewater was diluted to 40 (745 mglI), 20 (1,356 mglI), or 10 (2,875 mglI) times. The removal efficiency of phenols in 1/40- and lI20-diluted phenolic resin wastewater was about 92%, but the phenols in 1!1O-diluted wastewater were not degraded. The remained phenols in wastewater were absorbed by a mixture of activated carbon and rice bran (1:1, v:v) in the process of absorption which was connected to the biological treatment. The total removal efficiency of phenols in 1!40~ and l/20-diluted phenolic resin wastewater was 99.9%.
In this study we proposed on effect of the photodecomcomposition of coated nanofiber by $Pd/TiO_2$ for the removal of formaldehyde gas as indoor air pollutant. The photocatalytic reactor was setup in the inside of rectangular box (volume 2 l), UV lamp and the coating nanofiber with $Pd/TiO_2$. This study investigated the reaction rate and the adsorption constant of Langmuir-Heinshelwood, conversion of formaldehyde gas on temperature ($40^{\circ}C{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), effect of conversion (%) under different concentration, and effect of conversion (%) with humidity level on added $SO_2$ gas. As results, the rate constant (k) and adsorption constant (ft) were 114.94ppmv/min, $0.0036ppmv^{-1}$, respectively. and the conversion (%) of formaldehyde gas on temperature ($40^{\circ}C{\sim}80^{\circ}C$) was decreased to about 24%, compare with the first conversion (%). In conversion effect of increasing humidity levels, the presence of sulfur dioxide further decreased than without sulfur dioxide. the decreasing reason of conversion with presence sulfur dioxide judged as a cause of interference factor on the decrease of contact chance with photocatalysts.

Novel chitosan (CS) based membrane networks were developed by solution casting and followed by crosslinking with different crosslinkers such as glutaraldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, and thiourea-formaldehyde. The developed membrane networks were designated as CS-GA, CS-UF and CS-TF. Crosslinking reaction of CS membranes was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Membrane rigidity and compactness were studied by the differential scanning calorimetry. The surface morphology of CS membranes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The sorption behaviour with respect to contact time, initial pH and initial metal ion concentration were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of CS-GA, CS-UF and CS-TF sorbents was found to be 1.03, 1.2 and 1.18 mM/g for $Cu^{2+}$ and 1.48, 1.55 and 2.18 mM/g for $Ni^{2+}$ respectively. Swelling experiments have been performed on the membrane networks at $30^{\circ}C$. Desorption studies were performed in acid media and EDTA and it was found that the membranes are reusable for the metal ion removal for three cycles. The developed membranes could be successfully used for the separation of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ metal ions from aqueous solutions.
This investigation involves a study of the physical and chemical factors of Pinus densiflora SIEB. et ZUCC. and Quercus mongolica Fisher barks affecting on the adsorption of heavy mteal ions. The results obtained can be summarized as follows. 1. The capacity of the untreated bark to remove the Cu and Cd from solution was similar to or 5% higher than that of formaldehyde treated bark in both species. Considering that untreated bark lead to color-leaching problem, bark treated with formaldehyde are economical. 2. With decreasing particle size of bark(20-80), the adsorption ratio of the Cu and Cd from solution was increased. Quercus bark adsorbed more Cu and Cd at smaller particle size compared to Pinus bark. 3. The heavy metal eqilibrium adsorption of the bark from Cu and Cd solution was attained within 10 min. Pinus bark removed about 48% of the Cu and 41% of the Cd from solution in 10 min while Quercus bark removed about 50% during that period. 4. As the initial metal concentration increased. the absolute metal uptake was increased while percentage removal was decreased. At the lower metal concentration (10 ppm). Pinus and Quercus barks removed 77-94% of the Cu and 72-84% of the Cd. At high metal concentration (200 ppm), the adsorption ratio was 40% Cu and 25% Cd, respectivelty. 5. The maximum adsorption of the Cu and Cd from solution was obtained at pH 5-6 in filtrate. 6. With increased bark weight per given metal concentration, absolute removal of metal ion from solution was increased, but the percentage removal was decreased. The amount of adsorption was 4.2 mg Cu and 4.2 mg Cd per gr. Pinus, bark and 5.4 mg Cu and 4.3 mg Cd per gr. Quercus bark, respectively.

This study aims to examine the possible use of heavy oil fly ash as raw material for deodorization panels by adding additives such as activated carbon and diatomite during deodorization panel manufacturing process and improving the performance of formaldehyde and toluene elimination. The recycled heavy oil flyash deodorization panel to be used either of them as additives removed more than 93% of formaldehyde and more than 97% of toluen but the compressive strength was decreased 27 to 63%. In an experiment to be used both additives, Whereas, the panel to include activated carbon 5% and diatomite 5% removed 84% against formaldehyde and 96% against toluen, and the compressive strength was increased 32% better than standard panel. Therefore it could be confirmed that the recycled heavy oil flyash deodorization panel is increased the compressive strength and the removal efficiency against harmful chemical substances by using the additives mixture.
This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of indoor air cleaners and to inform how to select them correctly to the users. The efficiencies of removing suspended bacteria per hour were $64.3{\pm}13.1%$ for filter, wet, and complex type, respectively, which showed the complex type was the most efficient. The removal efficiencies of formaldehyde (HCHO) after two hours operation of air cleaners showed 88.3% and 81.1% for filter and wet type, respectively. The efficiency of complex type, with removal rate of 55.5~58.4%, was decreased after 30 minutes operation. Therefore, it is recommended to perform over 60 minutes when doing air cleaner certification test for HCHO removal efficiency. Generally, air cleaners having low wind volume showed higher efficiency. All tested air cleaners had no potential for removing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which is toxic substances, and it is desirable to develop a device which can control these substances. The results also confirmed that there was no ozone production from all tested air cleaners. And it is recommended to ventilate for 20 minutes every four hours to maintain 50% ventilation status.

Recently, residents have been spending almost 90% of their time indoors, which presents a higher risk from inhalation of pollutants than when spending time outdoors. Therefore, controlling indoor air quality became important. It is reported that the lung diseases and mortality for occupants are increased when there is high density of ozone which is one of the pollutants among the indoor air. In addition, the reactions between ozone and building materials produce VOCs and formaldehyde. The studies to eliminate the ozone by building materials have been actively investigated. However, ozone removal and secondary pollutants from ozone reactions with building materials have not been reported in Korea. For this reason, the aim of this study is to introduce ozone removal by HVAC filters, various building materials, and eco-friendly building materials including the quantity of secondary pollutant emissions.
This research was studied the action of the coupling ozone-hydrogen peroxide on aqueous humic acid. PEROXONE process is enhanced the generation of hydroxyl radicals which is effective for degradation of organic matters. Therefore the changes of $UV_{254}$ and TOC were investigated through the change of concentrations, injection time of $H_2O_2$, initial pH of aqueous humic acid and concentrations of radical savenger as $HCO_3{^-}$ in the PEROXONE processes. And the GC/ECD was used to detect the formaldehyde formed by ozonation of humic acid. From the experimental results, concentrations and injection time of $H_2O_2$ and initial pH in solution in the PEROXONE processes were very important for enhancing the efficiency of degradation in humic acid. The results indicated that removal efficiency of TOC was the highest when concentration of $H_2O_2$ was 5mg/L, injection time of $H_2O_2$ was 5 minutes and initial pH in solution was 10.5. And presence of alkalinity in solution was reduced the efficiency of treatment. The formaldehyde were formed less PEROXONE processes than only ozone. When initial pH in solution were changed from 3.5 to 10.5, the formaldehyde were formed highest concentration at pH 5.

The fixing behaviors of raw silk yarns treated with melamine and formaldehyde at a molar ratio of 1:3 for trimethylolmelamine were investigated. Sericin was fixed during the fixing process, but a part of sericin I was removed simultaneously by hot water. The weight losses by fixing and the degumming losses by degumming greatly decreased with increasing concentrations of melamine and formaldehyde. The silk yarns fixed with 0.011 M melamine and 0.033M formaldehyde were significantly degummed due to the insufficient fixation of sericin and the alkaline hydrolysis of sericin by sodium carbonate during the degumming process. On the other hand, the silk yarns fixed with 0.055M melamine and 0.165M formaldehyde were degummed slightly (the degumming losses of 3-8%) due to the strong fixation of sericin, which might result from the many cross-linkages between the sericin I molecules, which were formed by trimethylolmelamine. Those fixed with the fixing solution containing 15% owf softener showed the lowest weight and degumming losses because under the condition of 15% owf softener, the cation of the softener can effectively form ionic bonds with the negatively charged side chain of aspartic acid in sericin. In addition, van der Waals' forces may be also formed between the hydrophobic tail of the softener and the hydrophobic region of sericin, which may help inhibit the removal of sericin I.

As the major methanol fueled vehicle exhaust components, formaldehyde & methanol conversion over the existing commercial 3-way catalyst was examined in a labolatory tains different Ag loadings on commercial 3-way catalyst, and german commercial catalysts for methanol engine exhaust manufactured by a commercial manufacturer. Silver catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation of silver nitrate solution on commercial 3-way catalyst. These catalysts were characterized with BET Surface area and pore size distribution. In general, the formaldehyde(HCHO) conversion of the tested catalysts was similar to that of methanol$(CH_3OH)$. At 100$^\circ$C, which is equivalent to the cold start condition, 5wt% Ag cat. showed the most excellent HCHO and $CH_3OH$ conversion. The order of activity for conversion of HCHO & $CH_3OH$ to carbon dioxide and water vapor was as follows ; 5wt% Ag/3-way cat.>2wt% Ag/3-way cat.>german cat. front(1) > german cat. rear(2) > 10wt% Ag/3-way cat.> commercial 3-wat catalyst. However there was no significant activity difference between those tested catalysts in the hot run condition of 400$^\circ$C. Therefore, it could be concluded that the Ag-modified 3-way catalyst was the most effective and practical catalyst system which could be capable of removal the HCHO and methanol at the special condition of low temperature such as cold start condition.
