  • Winsborough Hall built by Martin L. Winehart who was the missionary of the Presbyterian Church of America in 1927 was built by Mrs. Winsborough's birthday contribution. Winsborough Hall was clearly divided into the original form built in 1927 and remodelled form by extension. Most of walls were constructed with several kinds of bricks for both sides and opening in the original form and remodelled form. Each room divided by inner wall was kept with original form because it is difficult to remodel it on the characteristics of building. But, it was confirmed through the related literatures that security of opening at some rooms and annexation of rooms through removal of the wall on the 2nd floor which was relatively easy to transform wall compared to the first floor were made. Variability of the wall affected the truss structure of roof and it created rare double truss structure. Architectural value of Winsborough Hall was in its first architectural trial using red brick in Gwangju region since 1920s. It suggested that it was differential architectural trial from Korean-Western mixed building constructed by the missionaries from 1940 to 1910 and buildings made of gray bricks prevailed from 1911 to 1920 and it showed the advancement in the architectural structure and materials.

  • To apply the research results to the design and the construction of the high rise buildings, long-term behavior of reinforced concrete structure have been widely studied. However, shoring and reshoring at early ages have not been considered in the most of studies. The removal of forms and shores has been dealt with one construction sequence. i.e. the deformation occurred at the early age before the removal of shore has been neglected. In this paper, two-dimensional frame analysis program for long-term behavior of reinforced concrete was developed. In the developed program, construction sequence including the settlement and the removal of shores is considered to predict axial force variation due to forms ,shores, and time-dependent concrete stiffness. Analysis results show that the time-dependent axial force of shores is reduced, and the redistributed axial force of the interior column is greater than the value by elastic analysis and that of the exterior column is smaller. In order to demonstrate the validity of this program, the test frame was constructed in sequence of the placement of concrete, form removal, reshoring, shore removal, and the application of additional load. The proposed program predicts experimental results well.

  • This study deals with the occurrence and application of 'Fun' as a linguistic function through form-giving. As a linguistic function, Fun could be defined, in a broad sense, as an emotion of desire when in relation to artifacts, and, in a narrow sense, as a physical or mental response when a person discovers unexpected information or artifacts. Hence, the occurrence of 'Fun' could be an analogy of a removal of a 'mental block' from using (or perceiving) artifacts. As an aspect of cognitive psychology, the context of form-giving, which has meanings in both artifact and design activity, will deal with an important factor of form-giving. From that, the elements of the context and the transformation of the elements are suggestive of 'Fun-oriented form-giving'. Hence, this study will show how to deal with that elements, what is required condition on it, 'Fun' in form-giving, and the Mechanism of Occurrence of 'FUN' based on this study, will be expected to apply them for product-concept effectively and Form-Giving fashionably.

  • Bony exostosis, one of the osseous deformities, could act as a contributing factor of periodontal disease since it makes proper tooth brushing difficult and causes traumatic ulcer. The purpose of this case report is to show improvement of periodontal health by removal of bony exostoses and creation of physiologic osseous form. A 58 year-old female patient with recurrent ulcer and pain on bony exostoses located on left maxillary palatal area and both mandibular buccal areas was treated. Exostoses were removed and physiologically positive osseous form was created following vertical grooving, radicular blending, flattening interproximal bone and gradualizing marginal bone. The patient showed no further recurring traumatic ulcer and bone exposure. Moreover, periodontal pocket was eliminated and food impaction was decreased. In conclusion, periodontal health could be achieved through removal of multiple bony exostoses and development of ideal osseous form.

  • Sorption characteristics of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn onto Ca- and Na-bentonites were investigated by the batch experiments in the condition of various pHs and concentrations of groundwater major anions (${So_4}^{2-}$ and ($HCO_3$), which can form a complex with heavy metals. The sorption removal of heavy metals steadily increases as pH increases. The sorption capability about heavy metals of both Ca-bentonite and Na-bentonite is in the order of Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd. The effect of pH and selectivity of heavy metals of bentonites were explained by the change of surface charge of bentonite and the speciation of heavy metals. Na-bentonite has a little higher sorption ability about heavy metals than that of Ca-bentonite. A high sorption removal of Pb in 0.1M sulfate solution may be attributed to the precipitation of $PbSo_4$(anglesite). However, sulfate has a slight effect on the sorption of CU, Cd and Zn. More than 99% of heavy metals were removed from the 0.1 M bicarbonate solution. However, the efficiency of sorption removal of heavy metals highly decreases in the bicarbonate solution of $10^{-2}$M to $10^{-4}$M. The speciation and saturation index calculated by the WATEQ4F program indicate that the sorption of anionic complexes such as ${Pb(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cd(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Zn(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cu(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$ and the precipitation of the solid phases such as $PbCO_3$(cerrusite), $ZnCO_3$(smithsonite), $CdCO_3$(obtavite) are involved in sorption removal of heavy metals in bicarbonate solution. The sorption capability about heavy metals of bentonites in the presence of anions shows the following order: Pb>Cu Cd>Zn.

  • Removal of arsenic (As) from soil aggregates with particle sizes of > 2.0, 2.0-0.25, 0.25-0.053, < 0.053 mm by soil washing of $KH_2PO_4$ and the kinetics of As releasing from soil aggregates were investigated. Effects of $KH_2PO_4$ concentration, ratio of liquid/soil and washing duration on the removal were fully explored. The results showed that the high As removal was obtained in > 2 mm aggregates (48.56%) and < 0.053 mm aggregates (42.88%) under the optimum condition ($KH_2PO_4$ concentration of 0.1 mol/L, and liquid/soil ratio (10 mL/g) for 360 min). 62.82% of As was extracted from aggregates with size less than 0.25 mm. Only 11.88% was contributed by the large aggregates (> 2.0mm). Using $KH_2PO_4$ washing, it was also found that extracted As is mainly in form of either specifically sorbed As or As associated with oxides of Fe and Al. Elovich model can describe the removal process of As more precisely than Two-constant kinetic models. The optimum washing conditions and removal process is also applied to bulk soil. This technique in this study is reliable, cost-effective and offers a great potential for practical application in soil remediation.

  • Removal of Mn-EDTA complex and fluoride by use of hematite and ferrite, which are the by-product to be disposed of as industrial wastes, was investigated. For the comparison of removal rate, Na-bentonite known as excellent absorbent of inorganic contaminants was included in the experiments. As the results of batch mode experiments, for manganese, ferrite-A revealed 48∼65% of removal capacity, ferrite-B 46∼57%, hematite 17∼26%, while Na-bentonite showed 10∼23% of removal, depending on the initial concentration. Meanwhile, in case of fluoride : hematite revealed 53 ∼63% of removal : ferrite-A 54∼63 %, while ferrite-B did 20∼38 %. From the results, it can be postulated that the capacity of hematite and ferrite to attenuate inorganic pollutants, especially when they form complex ions, is superior to that of Na-bentonite. Consequently, the mixing of such oxide minerals with Na-bentonite will reinforce the function of Na-bentonite, especially in the undergroud liner aspect.

  • Abrasive fluidized bed machining (AFBM) is similar to general abrasive fluidized machining (AFM) in that it can perform polishing of the outer and inner surfaces of a 3-dimensional shape by the flow of particles. However, in the case of AFM, the shear force generated by the flow of the particles causes material removal, while in AFBM, the abrasive particles are suspended in the chamber to form a bed. AFBM can be used for deburring, polishing, edge contouring, shot peening, and cleaning of mechanical parts. Most studies on AFBM are limited to metals, and research on application of AFBM to plastic materials has not been performed yet. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the effect of rotating speed of the specimen and the air flow rate on the material removal characteristics during AFBM of polyacetal with a horizontal AFBM machine. The material removal rate (MRR) increases linearly with increase of the rotating speed of the main shaft because of the shear force between the particles of the fluidized bed and the rotation of the workpiece. The reduction in surface roughness tends to increase as the rotating speed of the main shaft increases. As the air flow rate increases, the MRR tends to decrease. At a flow rate of 70 L/min or more, the MRR remains almost constant. The reduction of the surface roughness of the specimen is found to decrease with increasing air flow rate.

  • This study was carried out to survey the actual conditions of wastewater treatment facilities to obtain basic data for the management of wastewater from industrial complexes in Chungcheongnam-do province. Wastewater production flow per site area by watersheds was $49.2m^3/km^2/d$ for Sapgyoho, $8.1m^3/km^2/d$ for Anseongcheon, $5.7m^3/km^2/d$ for Seohae, and $2.9m^3/km^2/d$ for Geumgang. Sapgyoho showed 75% of the total production flow, which was the highest value, Geumgang showed 4% of total flow, which was the lowest value. Average total extra rate as production flow/capacity flow in the wastewater treatment facilities for industrial complex is 49%. Considering by watersheds, the extra rates of Seohae, Geumgang, Anseongcheon, and Sapgyoho, are 73%, 65%, 62%, and 33% respectively. This means that the design of capacity flow in wastewater treatment facilities was too large. Effluent concentration of wastewater treatment facilities did not exceed discharge limit mostly. The removal efficiency rate for water quality item was 90% in BOD, 70% in COD, 80% in SS, 30 to 80% in TN, and 20 to 90% in TP, so the organic removal was good, but the nutrient removal was low and interval of variation was high. The removal efficiency rate of the agricultural was industrial complexes is lower than the national and local complexes. The construction cost of the wastewater treatment facilities in Chungcheongnam-do was $1,756Won\;per\;m^3$, treatment cost was $189Won\;per\;m^3$, and they were about two times and 1.2 times higher than the nation-wide cost, respectively. The treatment cost consists of 39% for man power, 21% for chemical, 16% for power, 11% for sludge treatment, and 13% for others.

  • The adaptability of earthworm casts produced form the waste sludge of pulp and paper plants for a biocarrier used in the advanced wastewater treatment was investigated. Removal efficiencies of nutrients in the activated sludge technology without carrier were compared with those treated with carrier made of casts under the different conditions such as the composition of the input and kinds of carrier. When the waste water was treated in the activated sludge technology without carriers, removal efficiencies of T-P and T-N were average values of 31% and 52%, respectively. On the contrary, pellet type carrier and pack type carrier increased the removal efficiencies of T-P and T-N by 1.3~1.4 and 1.9~2.0 times, respectively. At the same time, the high removal of T-P and T-N were observed irrespective of the types of carrier in which many kinds of microorganisms were grown. The difference in the removal efficiencies of BOD and COD between the treatment with and without carrier was negligible. According to this research, the carrier made of casts was thought to be highly applicable in the advanced wastewater treatment.
