Effects of Participatory Design on the Development of Space Concept in Young Children

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of participatory design workshops conducted to design forest play spaces that reflect young children's needs and demands on the development of spatial concepts in young children. As a research method for this purpose, we used the participatory design workshop (6 times) and Landscape Montage Techniques (LMT). We conducted this study at the "Songsan-mulbit Forest Experience Center for children (FECC)" located in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, from the second week of May to third week of June 2018 for preschoolers in K-kindergarten (six and seven-year-old integrated classes; 41 preschoolers in total). We conducted the LMT evaluation on the same preschoolers before and after the workshop, and the drawings of 39 preschoolers drawn for LMT evaluation before and after the workshop were subject to the final evaluation. As a result of the study, the cognitive levels for the spatial concept after the workshop are higher than those for the spatial concept before the workshop, especially showed the result of comparing the LMT values of 6 age and 7 age, there were significant differences on pre and post workshop in p<0.01.

Flowering and fruiting phenology of herbs, climbers, shrubs, and trees in the deciduous dipterocarp forest of Northern Thailand

  • Background: The flowering and fruiting periods play an important role in biological processes. The deciduous dipterocarp forest is an important forest type in Thailand, however the phenological studies are still limited, particularly in different plant life forms. Thus, the present study focused on the flowering and fruiting phenology of herbs, climbers, shrubs, and trees in the deciduous dipterocarp forest at Lampang province of Northern Thailand. Field visits were made to record plant life forms and observe reproductive phenological events at monthly intervals from November 2018 to October 2019 and September to December 2020. Results: The phenological observations were based on 126 species of 45 families and 102 genera. Flowering and fruiting periods showed similar patterns in herbaceous plants, climbers, and shrubs. Most of these species produced flowers and fruits from the end of the rainy season (October) to the winter season (November-January). Whereas most of flowering and fruiting trees were found from the summer season (March-April) to the beginning of the rainy season (May-June). Most of the dry-fruited species occurred during the dry period (winter and summer seasons), while the majority of fleshy-fruited species dominated in the wet period (rainy season). The statistical analysis supported the phenological patterns of flowering and fruiting in the present study. There were significant negative correlations between the number of flowering and fruiting species and temperature. The number of flowering and fruiting species is significantly impacted by the interaction between seasons and plant life forms. Conclusions: Plant life form seems to be the important factor that affects the different phenological patterns in the studied plants. The abiotic and biotic factors play major roles in reproductive phenology. However, long-term study and in-depth phenological observations are necessary for better understanding.

서울시 유아숲체험장의 공간 개선 방안 (The Design Improvement Plan of Seoul Forest Visitor Centers for Little Children)

  • 유아숲체험장은 유아가 산림을 체험함으로써 전인적 성장을 이루는 교육 시설이며, 숲이라는 환경에 특정 시설이 설치됨으로써 완성되는 것이 아니라 숲이라는 환경 자체에서 유아가 자유롭게 놀이할 수 있는 공간이 되어야 한다. 본 연구는 서울시 유아숲체험장의 현황을 종합적으로 평가하여 숲체험 효과를 높이기 위한 공간 개선 방안을 제시하였다. 이론 고찰을 통해 숲체험 효과를 높이는 공간 요소 7가지와 실외놀이공간을 구성하는 6가지 영역을 도출하여 현황 평가를 위한 분석 표를 작성하고 서울시 유아숲체험장 24곳을 대상으로 현장조사연구를 수행하였다. 또한 전문가 인터뷰를 통해 유아교육학 관점에서 물리적 현황을 살펴보고 이용 주체의 경험을 정리하였다. 연구 결과 서울시 유아숲체험장은 위치적 특성과 공간 구조에 따라 6가지 유형으로 분류되며 각 유형별 특징을 갖는다. 개별 유아숲체험장의 환경적 강점을 드러냄으로써 숲체험의 효과를 높일 수 있다. 야외체험학습장의 경우 운동놀이 영역의 비중이 가장 컸다. 영역별 체험 공간을 고르게 구성함으로써 유아에게 보다 다양한 경험을 제공할 수 있다. 그러나 획일적인 시설물 위주의 현황을 숲체험 효과를 낮추는 단편적인 요인으로 볼 수는 없다. 창의적인 활동을 유도하여 숲체험 효과를 높이는 핵심은 주변 자연환경을 고려한 공간 구성이다. 시설물은 유아의 관심이 숲으로 옮겨가도록 돕는 매개체가 되어야 한다. 본 연구는 서울시 유아숲체험장의 평균적인 물리적 현황을 파악할 수 있는 자료를 작성하였고, 숲체험 효과를 높이기 위한 공간 개선 방안을 제시하였다. 이는 사업시행 약 10년이 지난 시점에서 유아숲체험장의 질적 수준 향상을 위한 연구의 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있다.

교사 산림교육 직무연수 프로그램 효과성 분석 (Analysis on the Effectiveness of the Forest Education Programs for Teachers)

  • 본 연구는 2017년 8월 국립횡성숲체원에서 진행된 교원 산림교육 직무연수에 참가한 유치원 및 초·중·고등학교 교사 46명을 대상으로, 사전·사후 설문조사를 통해 프로그램의 효과성을 분석한 것이다. 연구결과, 직무연수 참여 전과 후에 교사들의 환경감수성과 자연친화적 교수태도, 교사효능감이 통계적으로 유의하게 상승하여, 프로그램의 긍정적인 효과를 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 교사효능감과 관련해 교사의 자신감은 다소 줄어든 것으로 나타나, 교사들이 자신감을 가질 수 있는 실질적인 교수역량 개발을 위한 연수의 필요성이 확인되었다. 본 연구는 학교 현장에서 학생들의 환경감수성과 자연친화적 태도 발달에 중요한 영향을 미치는 교사들을 대상으로 산림교육의 효과성을 확인하고, 보다 효과적인 직무연수 프로그램을 개발하기 위한 시사점을 도출하였다는 데 의의가 있다.

Influences of Forest Fire on Forest Floor and Litterfall in Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary (C.G.), India

  • Tropical forests play a key role for functioning of the planet and maintenance of life. These forests support more than half of the world's species, serve as regulators of global and regional climate, act as carbon sinks and provide valuable ecosystem services. Forest floor biomass and litterfall dynamics was measured in different sites influenced by fire in a seasonally dry tropical forest of Bhoramdeo wildlife sanctuary of Chhattisgarh, India. The forest floor biomass was collected randomly placed quadrats while the litterfall measured by placing stone-block lined denuded quadrat technique. The seasonal mean total forest floor biomass across the fire regimes varied from $2.00-3.65t\;ha^{-1}$. The total litterfall of the study sites varied from $4.75-7.56t\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$. Annual turnover of litter varied from 70-74% and the turnover time between 1.35-1.43 years. Monthly pattern of forest floor biomass indicated that partially decayed litter, wood litter and total forest floor were differed significantly. The seasonal variation showed that leaf fall differed significantly in winter season only among the fire regimes while the wood litter was found non significant in all the season. This study shows that significant variation among the site due to the forest fire. Decomposition is one of the ecological processes critical to the functioning of forest ecosystems. The decomposing wood serves as a saving account of nutrients and organic materials in the forest floor. Across the site, high fire zone was facing much of the deleterious effects on forest floor biomass and litter production. Control on such type of wildfire and anthropogenic ignition could allow the natural recovery processes to enhance biological diversity. Chronic disturbances do not provide time for ecosystem recovery; it needs to be reduced for ecosystem health and maintaining of the high floral and faunal biodiversity.

자연림 군집형 분류에 의한 교란의 정도와 임분 발달 사이의 관련성 검토 (The Evaluation of Correlation between Disturbance Intensity and Stand Development by Natural Forest Community Type Classification)

  • The correlation between disturbance intensity and stand development was evaluated on the basis of natural forest community type classification in areas of Baekhaksan (more disturbed area) and Hwangaksan (less disturbed area). The vegetation data were collected by point-centered quarter sampling method, and they were subjected to cluster analysis for classifying community types and to analysis of species composition and species diversity for reviewing ecological characteristics. By the method of cluster analysis, natural forests of Baekhaksan were classified into Quercus forest community, Pinus densiflora community, Q. variabilis community, and Q. mongolica community. Those of Hwangaksan were divided into P. densiflora community, Q. mongolica community, Q. forest community, and Mixed mesophytic community. It is presumed that more developed and less disturbed forest area shows multiple species community pattern and more diversified structure than less developed and more disturbed forest area. In Korean peninsula, the abundance of red pine may play an important indicator to estimate the developmental pattern of the forest after artificial disturbance. The overall evaluation indicated that less disturbed Hwangaksan area had more developed stand pattern with mixed mesophytic community, more complicated species composition, and higher species diversity than Baekhaksan area.

관개논과 산림유역의 홍수유출 특성 비교 (A Comparative Study of Storm Runoff Characteristics far Irrigated Paddy Fields and forest Watershed)

  • Rainfall and runoff data from a forested watershed and irrigated rice paddies at the Bal-an experimental watershed were monitored and analyzed to investigate the variations of runoff characteristics with different land use. The comparisons were conducted fourteen storm events ranging 21.8∼190.2 mm of rainfall. Field data showed that direct runoff from paddies and forested watershed are not significantly different in volume. The peak discharge from forest watershed was less than that from paddies far lighter storms, but became greater fur heavier storms. The peak runoff from the forest watershed was 39 percent greater than from the paddies. The results demonstrate that paddies play an important role to reduce peak discharge from heavy storms as compared to forest.

격리된 도시숲, 홍릉숲 나비군집의 특성 (Characterization of the Butterfly Community of a Fragmented Urban Forest, Hongneung Forest)

  • 녹색 섬의 형태로 존재하는 도시숲은 대도시에 서식하는 생물들의 주 서식공간이다. 도시숲은 면적이 적고, 임연부의 비율이 높다. 이러한 특성 때문에 도시 외곽의 산림의 나비군집에 비해 도시숲의 나비군집는 종다양성이 낮고, 초지종, 숲가장자리종과 생태지위 범위가 더 넓은 일반종의 비율이 높을 것으로 예상된다. 이러한 사실을 밝히기 위해 전형적인 도시숲인 홍릉숲에서 나비를 선조사법으로 주별로 조사하였다. 홍릉숲의 나비군집은 도시외곽의 산림에 사는 나비군집에 비해 종다양성이 월등히 낮았고, 초지종, 숲가장자리종과 일반종의 비율이 높아 예측되는 것과 동일한 결과를 얻었다. 홍릉숲에서 멸종위기 2급종인 쌍꼬리부전나비가 관찰됨으로서, 도시숲은 희귀종의 보존에 중요한 역할을 한다고 할 수 있다.

  • Japan is one of the major forest-rich countries in the world with two thirds of its national territory covered with forests. The various functions of forests, including the prevention of global warming, conservation of national land, recharging of water resources, and maintenance of biotic diversity, play an important role in our safe, secure, and comfortable living. With the increasing national expectations on the role of forests to contribute to the prevention of global warming and "Accelerating forest carbon-sink measures to achieve Kyoto Protocol Commitment", it is necessary to make efforts toward a large-scale forest regeneration in order to secure an absorption of 13 million carbon tons through forest carbon sink for the achievement of the target of six percent reduction under the Kyoto Protocol. Most importantly, however, is to accelerate the measures for forests as absorption sources, including thinning and other forestry management activities. However, there is a situation, among others, where thinning is not implemented properly due to the decreased willingness of forest owners to manage forests, because of the long-term low demand for domestic lumber and lumber prices. In addition, forestry workers are aging and decreasing in number. Thus, the circumstances surrounding forestry are severe. It is necessary for the protection of our precious forests to make efforts to create and maintain forests with activities that involve citizens such as the "National Movement for Utsukushii Mori Zukuri(Fostering Beautiful Forests)".

Mitrula aurea sp. nov., A New Aero-Aquatic Species from the Republic of Korea

  • The genus Mitrula (Mitrulaceae, Helotiales), as also known as swamp beacons, inhabits submerged, decaying vegetation in standing or decaying needles, twigs, leaves, and shallow water. They play an important role in carbon cycling in some freshwater ecosystems. In the herbarium of the Korea National Arboretum (KH), seven Mitrula specimens were collected during mushroom forays in the period from 2019 to 2021. The Korean collections were found to be macromorphologically closely related to M. paludosa and M. elegans, but micro-morphologically they could be distinguished by characteristics of slightly narrower asci and aseptate ascospores. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S rDNA regions also revealed that our specimens were related to M. paludosa and M. elegans, but formed a distinct clade. Based on these results, we reported our specimens as new to science and discussed the phylogeny and diversity of Mitrula species.
