In order to decrease the area damaged by forest fires and to prevent the occurrence of forest fires, we are making an effort to improve prevention measures for forest fires. This study was conducted to forecast risk regions where forest fires occur based on the factors of forest type and topographic characteristics and predict hazard regions where forest fires is expanded to large-scale forest fire based on the forest type characteristics in Uiseong-Gun. The results of classification of forest fire risk and hazard regions using GIS indicate 4% of the total areas in Uiseong-Gun.
Forest fires can generate numerous pollutants through the combustion of vegetation and cause serious environmental problems. The global warming and climate change will increase the frequency and scale of forest fires across the world. In Korea, many nuclear power plants (NPPs) are located in the East Coast where large-scale forest fires frequently occur. Therefore, understanding the sorption and transport characteristics of radionuclides in the forest fire areas is required against the severe accidents in NPPs. This article reviewed the physiochemical changes and contamination of groundwater and soil environments after forest fires, and discussed sorption and transport of radionuclides in the subsurface environment of burned forest area. We considered the geochemical factors of subsurface environment changed by forest fire. Moreover, we highlighted the need for studies on changes and contamination of subsurface environments caused by forest fires to understand more specific mechanisms.
Last year's Goseong-Sokcho forest fires have highlighted the limitations of extinguishing work for night-time forest fire and the importance of quick identification for information on the spread of forest fire. However, it is not easy to find services that take into account the characteristics of forest fires, as most existing disaster-related mobile applications and research assume various disaster situations rather than just forest fire situations. Therefore, a system that can provide information quickly is needed, taking into account the characteristics of forest fires and the limitations of extinguishing work. In this paper, we propose evacuation route guidance services that bypass areas where fire has already spread, supplement existing methods of extinguishing work, and provide general information on forest fire situations in real time, by putting drones into forest fire situations. It has been implemented to automate image analysis using the Rekognition service of Amazon Web Service (AWS), and the results of fire detection and the T Map API guide the evacuation path. It is expected that the results of this paper will allow efficient and rapid rescue and extinguishing work to be carried out, and further reduce the damage of human life caused by forest fires.
It is necessary to examine relationship between spatial patterns of forest types and characteristics of forest fires for efficient management of fire and forest. By the ecoregions of South Korea, we computed landscape indices for whole types of forests(landscape level) and pine forests(class level), and analyzed characteristics of forest fires using statistics of forest fires from 1991 to 2006. We performed canonical correlation analysis to model the relationship between the landscape indices and the statistics of forest fires. At landscape level, forest patches were larger and more complex in the ecoregions which had higher percentage of forest area. At class level, pine forest patches were more complex and closer to neighbor patches in the coastal ecoregions. The ecoregions including metropolitan areas and cities had more frequent fire occurrences per 1,000ha, while mountainous coastal ecoregions had more burned areas and faster spread of fire growth rate. The canonical correlation between the landscape indices for pine forests and the statistics of forest fires was statistically significant at the 0.05 level and explained more than 70% of the variation in fire variables. The results showed that combustion time per fire was longer in the ecoregions which had larger and more aggregated pine forest patches.

This study aims to classify forest fire-affected areas, identify forest types by the intensity of forest fire damage using multi-time Landsat-satellite images before and after forest fires and to analyze the effects of artificial restoration sites and natural restoration sites. The difference in the values of the Normalized Burned Ratio(NBR) before and after forest fire damage not only maximized the identification of forest fire affected and unaffected areas, but also quantified the intensity of forest fire damage. The index was also used to confirm that the higher the intensity of forest fire damage in all forest fire-affected areas, the higher the proportion of coniferous forests, relatively. Monitoring was conducted after forest fires through Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI), an index suitable for the analysis of effects by restoration type and the NDVI values for artificial restoration sites were found to no longer be higher after recovering the average NDVI prior to the forest fire. On the other hand, the natural restoration site witnessed that the average NDVI value gradually became higher than before the forest fires. The study result confirms the natural resilience of forests and these results can serve as a basis for decision-making for future restoration plans for the forest fire affected areas. Further analysis with various conditions is required to improve accuracy and utilization for the policies, in particular, spatial analysis through forest maps as well as review through site checks before and immediately after forest fires. More precise analysis on the effects of restoration will be available based on a long term monitoring.
The east coast of the Korean Peninsula is susceptible to fires because of the low rainfall in winter and spring, and large forest fires have occurred in this area. Lack of fresh water to combat fires has hampered efforts to prevent widespread forest fires in this region. Seawater has not been used as a suppressant because of possible detrimental effects of salt. We investigated the mobility of saline water in the forest soil and their effect on the microbial activity. Using a fire-fighting helicopter, seawater was sprayed over three plots (50 × 100 m) located on the eastern slope of the Baekdu mountain range in South Korea in April, 2011. We sampled the soil in April 4, May 20, and August 5 to determine the amount of salt that remained in the soil. The electrical conductivity value of the soil decreased to <400 μS/cm over a 1-month period. Approximately, four months after the application of seawater, the electrical conductivity value and Na+ content in all treatment plots did not significantly differ to those of the control plot, and total microbial activity also recovered to that of the control. Our results indicate that the amount of rainfall, soil physical-chemical properties, and topological factors may be a critical factor determining the mobility of saline water in forest soil.
Porcelain insulators have generally been used in Korea but polymer insulators which are superior in that they are light weight, explosion proof, impact proof, economical with construction characteristics, have been in use for the 154kV transmission line since 1999 following a worldwide trend towards the reduced weight, simplification and compact usage of new material insulators. However there have been approximately 500 cases of forest fires in Korea, so the transmission lines that for the most part pass through mountainous areas have been highly effected and the highly polymerized compound polymer insulator has raised concern about reliability in cases of exposure to forest fires. Therefore for the reliability assessment of the effect of forest fires on polymer insulators, mechanical and electrical characteristics are analyzed by an artificial flare test device and transmission facility surrounding conditions along with forest fire characteristics are surveyed. In addition to this, actual 90kV energized transmission line was tested with an artificial forest fire and the expanded usage of polymer insulators is presented through the analysis of mechanical and electrical characteristics and physical properties, and a study on the influence of forest fires on polymer insulators.

For monitoring forest fires, a real-time system to prevent fires in wider areas should be supported consistently. However, there has still been a lack of the support for real-time system related to forest fire monitoring. In addition, the 'real-time' processing in a forest fire detection system can lead to excessive consumption of energy. To solve these problems, the intelligent data acquisition of sensing nodes is required, and the maximum energy savings as well as rapid and accurate detection by flame sensors need to be done. In this regard, this paper proposes a node built-in filter algorithm for intelligent data collection of sensing nodes for the rapid detection of forest fires with focus on reducing the power consumption of the remote sensing nodes and providing efficient wireless sensor network-based forest environment monitoring in terms of data transmission, network stability and data acquisition. The experimental result showed that battery life can be extended through the intelligent sampling of remote sensing nodes, and the average accuracy of the measurement of flame detection based on the distance is 44%.

Early detection of forest fires is essential in preventing large-scale forest fires. Predicting forest fires serves as a vital early detection method, leading to various related studies. However, many previous studies focused solely on climate and geographic factors, overlooking human factors, which significantly contribute to forest fires. This study aims to develop forest fire prediction models that take into account human, weather and geographical factors. This study conducted a comparative analysis of four machine learning models alongside the logistic regression model, using forest fire data from Gangwon-do spanning 2003 to 2020. The results indicate that XG Boost models performed the best (AUC=0.925), closely followed by Random Forest (AUC=0.920), both of which are machine learning techniques. Lastly, the study analyzed the relative importance of various factors through permutation feature importance analysis to derive operational insights. While meteorological factors showed a greater impact compared to human factors, various human factors were also found to be significant.

Forest fires have been threats to natural resources, endangered species, properties and even to human lives. Efficient management of forest fires requires a complete understanding of the environmental and human related activities, as well as complicate spatial relationships among them. A geo-spatial information system(GSIS) is an appropriate method of being able to mapping and to analyze the spatial data for forest fires. Therefore, this study is to provide and classify the terrain, vegetation, life environment soil and geology factors, and to analyze spatial distribution for forest fire areas by applying the GSIS and the Remote Sensing technology. On the other hands, causes of increasing numbers of forest fires being occurred after In were assessed by comparing the normalized difference vegetation index((NDVI).
