  • We investigated brain activity during the performance of the intelligence task by a science high school student group (n=8) and a foreign language high school student group (n=5). Both groups scored in the top 1% on intelligence tests (science high school group: RAPM mean score=34.0, WAIS mean IQ=139.6; foreign language high school group: RAPM mean score=33.8, WAIS mean IQ=147.2). Analysis of brain activity during the performance of the intelligence task showed that both groups had brain activity in certain areas, including the left and right prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, and anterior cingulate. The science high school group showed the highest activity in the right parietal cortex, which is related to visuo-spatial working memory, whereas the foreign language high school group showed the highest activity in the left prefrontal cortex, which is related to verbal working memory. The foreign language high school group showed higher brain activity than the science high school group in the left precentral gyrus which is related to the motion of the tongue and lips. These results show that the science high school group utilized the visuo-spatial area, whereas the foreign language high school group utilized the verbal area during the performance of the intelligence task. This suggests that the major thinking process differs depending on the gifted students' primary field of study, although they are doing the same task.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the attitudes towards mathematics of high school students by comparing students of a general public school and a foreign language high school. The researchers were interested in how the two groups, middle or middle lower achievers and high achievers, showed their attitudes toward mathematics and where their attitudes were derived from. For the investigation, the researchers surveyed 121 students of general public high school and 64 students of a foreign language high school. Reliability, mean difference with t-test and frequency were analyzed. The results showed that many students from both groups had negative attitudes toward mathematics. However, the causes of the attitudes were different between the two groups. This implies that we need to reform the instructional methods and curricula of mathematics cources.

  • The purpose of this paper is to discover how the use of digital applications can affect students' attitudes toward positive classroom participation and performance in learning a foreign language. Participants of this study were 128 students who took a foreign language class at a high school in central Korea. To find out students' perceptions and attitudes toward the effect of using a digital application for their foreign language study, online questionnaire and focus-group interview were conducted. Our research findings revealed that these students could engage in active language learning and experience learning improvement while studying a foreign language with digital applications. The improvement was possible by creating more interactive activities and quizzes. In addition, the digital application provided students immediate feedback. It gave students and teachers various motivations beyond the traditional 'chalk and talk' format of text-only-classes. This study provides an overview of the usefulness of digital application. In addition, it provides understanding for students' perceptions and involvement using digital application in a foreign language classroom.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the awareness and attitudes of adolescent consumers toward Korean-made products with brand names of a foreign language. The survey method was utilized, and 393 middle and high school students were selected. The major findings were as follows; 1) 61.2% of the respondents have not awared the trend of foreign language brand naming of Korean-made products at all. 2) The respondents have awared the trend of foreign language brand naming of Korean-made products could affact adolescents' consumption culture. 3) The attitudes toward Korean-made products with brand names of a foreign language were found to be rather negative, and the attitudes toward the trend of a foreign language brand naming of Korean-made products were found to be also rather negative.

  • This study investigates perceptual confusions of English fricatives among 121 Korean elementary school English as a foreign language (EFL) learners with shorter periods of learning English. The objective is to examine how they perceive English fricative consonants and to provide educational guidelines. Two sets of English fricative identification tasks-voiceless fricatives and voiced fricatives-were administered to participants in a High Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) setting. Their phonemic awareness of the fricatives was visualized in perceptual confusion maps via multidimensional scaling analysis. The findings are explored in terms of the impacts of Korean EFL learners' L1 linguistic aspects and a comparison with L1 learners. Learners' phonemic awareness patterns are then compared with their relative importance in speech intelligibility based on a functional load hierarchy. The results indicated that Korean elementary EFL learners recognized English fricatives in a manner largely akin to L1 learners, suggesting their ongoing acquisition progress. Additionally, the findings demonstrated that the young EFL learners possess sufficient phonemic awareness for most high functional load segments but encounter some difficulties with one high and one low functional pair. The findings of this study offer suggestions for diagnosing language learners' phonemic awareness abilities, thereby aiding in the development of practical guidelines for language instructional design and helping educators make informed decisions regarding teaching priority in L2 classes.

  • In the study, the effect of flipped classroom approach applied to chemistry I class in a foreign language high school was explored. Flipped classroom was applied to 176 grade 10 students (43 boys and 133 girls) from a foreign language high school located in a metropolitan city for one semester and its instructional effects were studied in terms of cognitive and affective aspects. Before the class, students were provided with guiding worksheets and asked to summarize contents. Within the class, various student-centered activities were adopted. After the flipped classroom for one semester, mid-term and final-term exam scores were analyzed, and students' attitude toward chemistry class and flipped classroom were surveyed. Analysis on the exam scores showed the possibility for positive impact on students' achievement and perceptions on chemistry class including flipped classroom approach. Moreover, some students mentioned flipped classroom was helpful for self-directed learning and meta-cognition. Based on these results, educational implications were discussed.

  • This paper examines the role of extensive reading in foreign language learning classrooms. The effects of extensive reading are shown both positive and negative as in Krashen (1999) and Spada (1997), particularly researches done in classroom setting. Extensive reading is hard to implement in foreign language classrooms due to the stringent school curricula despite its benefits in cognitive and affective domain of learners. This study searched 21 papers from research database on extensive reading researches in a classroom setting and synthesized 55 cognitive effects and 11 affective effects from these papers under investigation in a manner of quantifying their means and standard deviations to derive generalizations. Research synthesis in this manner has secured its own status of scientific investigation by providing secondary researchers with replicable methods that produce verifiable findings. The syntheses of researches show that extensive reading is effective in both literacy skills and other language skills such as listening and writing. It also shows positive effects across different age groups, but the effect sizes are different in that elementary and adults gained more positive effects than middle and high school students.
