Way to on the Improvement of University Life in Vietnam Foreign Student Abroad - Based on a Survey of Living, Economic, Welfare Environment, University Major Education, and Language Training - (베트남 유학생들의 행복한 대학생활 적응 방안 - 생활·경제, 복지 환경, 대학 전공 교육, 언어 연수 설문 조사를 기반으로 -)

  • Since the 2000s, the number of foreign students in Korea has increased considerably. In late 2010, the government's strategy to internationalize higher education will bring the number of foreign students to 140,000 as of 2019 and soon to 200,000 by 2023. As the number of foreign students increases, the happy life of foreign students in Korea has become a very important social issue at a time when the population is shrinking. Increasing the satisfaction level of foreign students living in Korea is a matter that should not be overlooked given that our society will face problems of globalization and population cliff in the future. Recently, the number of Vietnamese students studying in Korea has been on the rise, raising the need to pay attention to their happy study lives. In this study, I would like to suggest a plan for the happy life of Vietnamese students in Korea. To that end, 90 Vietnamese students in Korea were surveyed on their satisfaction with living, economy, welfare environment, university education, language education and overall studying abroad. Foreign students entering Korean society should also work together in terms of living, economy, welfare and education so that they can recognize themselves as a member of our society and live happily abroad.

Cognition of Teachers' and Students' Awareness on Gender for the Contents of Korean Language Education (외국어로서 한국어 교육콘텐츠에서의 성별언어에 대한 인식)

  • This paper focuses on gender studies with respect to language education for KFL(Korean as a foreign language) students. It also attempts to view the role of gender as exerting influence on language learning and teaching, and surveys KFL teachers' awareness of the role of gender in Korean language education. It is conceivable that teachers who are aware of differences between female and male will be able to take these into account in their teaching; in doing so they will be more effective in their teaching than if they were to teach in ignorance of these differences. The survey for the teachers' awareness of gender difference was conducted through teachers' discussion as the follow-up measure of the questionnaire. A few teachers do not have a clear idea about the importance of gender differences in language teaching, but the majority have cognizance of the matter. For this research, a questionnaire was administered to 71 subjects, consisting 37 intermediate KFL students and 34 advanced KFL students. The result of the questionnaire reveals that 50.4% subjects use their words and intonation without recognizing the gender difference, on the other hand, 49.6% subjects recognize the gender differences in Korean language use. The result should be adopted as a sociolinguistic factor for the contents of second language education.

The importance of interlanguage in teaching English as a foreign language (영어교육에서 중간언어의 중요성)

  • In order to obtain a better understanding of L2 learners, transitional knowledges, it is very important and necessary to have a better knowledge of interlanguage. According to Corder, the role of interlanguage in English education holds significance to (1) for language teachers, (2) for language learners themselves, and (3) for language textbook compilers. To me the significance of interlanguage in English education can be described in terms of not only language teachers, learners themselves, textbook writers and compilers but pure linguists, applied linguists, school authorities as well as parents. For language learners themselves a clear understanding of interlanguage results in students being receptive to language input, and the avoidance of mental block, and low levels of foreign language anxiety. Native speakers of English (NSE) reflect not only linguistic features but also psychological, socio-linguistic, and discourse features when engaged in communication activities. This means that L2 learners are introduced to these different features, especially pragmatic features which are different from their mother tongue or L1 when engaged in communication with NSE. Hence the importance of interlanguage pragmatics should be recognized. It is very important that teachers of English should have a better understanding of interlanguage and present L2 learners with their interlanguage features so they can avoid any misunderstandings such features may cause when conversing with NSS. It should also be noted that interlanguage can form the foundation of language acquisition theory and linguistic analysis.

Measures on Improving Korean Language Skills by Using Shadowing Techniques (섀도잉(shadowing)기법을 활용한 한국어 수업 방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce an efficient measure in Korean language education for learners of Korean by applying shadowing techniques which focus on improving not only listening and speaking skills but also reading and writing skills. First of all, the study discusses about the definition of shadowing along with the effect of shadowing. The second part will be about examining the proposed method related to shadowing technique which is comprised of original shadowing techniques and other techniques transformed from the original. Thirdly, the paper will be discussing background information of the shadowing technique in previous researches and experiments using shadowing techniques in Korean language education. Finally, there will be an introduction of learning measures that apply to skill unification. Most of the previous researches of the shadowing technique were limited to a few students with only mid-to-high level learners while this method could cover up to a wide range of learners. The most effective way of learning a foreign language would firstly be the suggested method and the focus should be on repetition and practice of the learners.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions of preschool English education, and teachers' and parents' recognition of preschool early English education in Cheonan-city. Recently the importance of English education as an essential means for communication in the whole world is emphasized in our society. That atmosphere makes the elementary schools offer English as a subject in their curriculums, and also many preschool education institutes begin to teach English in their education courses. However before we begin to teach English as a subject in the preschool education, we need to survey the actual conditions of preschools and recognition of teachers and parents. The first part of this study is to survey the theoretical foundations of early English education; 1) the definition of early English education. 2) the situation of early foreign language education in foreign countries. 3) the relationship between the language acquisition and the cognitive development. The second part is to analyze the results of the Questionnaire which was distributed among 86 teachers and 103 parents in Cheonan-city preschools. As a conclusion, some suggestions will be given for the development of early English education in the near future.

  • The purpose of this study to examine the status of Korean language education, and to examine the future direction between with korean and China. The Korean language course organized by the European Union Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which selects and conducts consignment companies through annual competition every year since 2002, In order to these goals and needs, it is imperative to develop a curriculum that enhances job skills. As Korean language education, a point that is necessary to clarify terms more clearly, which 'vocational education purpose' is widely used in the term of 'business education'. With all languages education, Korean language education is not meant to teach Korean to foreigners, but it is a process by which learners can apply Korean language learned in classroom to various situations, while outside the classroom through teaching and learning. Otherwise, the curriculum in the four-year college Korean language department in China, which is lacking in acquiring the ability to achieve the Korean language education goals and social needs. Korean language education in China is one of foreign language education and it is different from foreign language education such as English education as Minor Languages education.

  • The article considers general tendencies in world and education, and also both principles and methods of forming professional, communicative, intercultural competences and in the process of teaching foreign language for professional purposes in the conditions of engineering, economic and other non-linguistic specialties at technical university. The article views some essential issues of this competence including awareness of pedagogical values, the construction of the pedagogical process, pedagogical communication and behavior; pedagogical technology, its essence, structural components, understanding of innovative components of professional activity, requirements for the design and engineering of pedagogical technologies.

  • In today's firms, there is an increasing awareness amongst managers and executives on the importance of secretary's role. This is a study on the profile of the corporate executive secretary's job responsibilities with emphasis on communication skills, interpersonal and foreign language fluency, which I deem relevant to their position. As a result, I believe that an executive secretary must obtain at least a two-year secretarial degree, Furthermore, I propose that their education must include and stress emphasis in foreign languages. Nevertheless, I feel that in today's global economy, it is important that executive secretaries are fluent in at least two(2) foreign languages that would enable him/her to write his/her boss' speeches, editing dictated materials and creating corresspondences. This study is believed to contribute to the education of the future executive secretaries and the managers etc.

Examining Generalizability of Kang's (1999) Model of Structural Relationships between ESL Learning Strategy Use and Language Proficiency

  • The present study examined whether Kang's (1999) model of the relationships among language learning strategy use and language proficiency for the Asian students could be applied to a more heterogeneous group. In Kang's study, he collected information of language learning strategies of 957 foreign students learning English as a second language in American colleges through a questionnaire. He also measured the subjects' language proficiency with the Institutional Testing Program TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This study analyzed the same data without the limitation of cultural identity. Structural equation modeling was used to model the relationships among strategy use and language proficiency. Then, the model of the present study was descriptively compared with Kang's (1999) model for the Asian students. The overall flow of the relationship paths appeared to vary very little across the two models, which would have indicated that the generalizability of Kang's (1999) model could be extended more than originally examined.   • In this study, it is necessary to supplement the Korean language curriculum in order for international students to adapt and settle in Korea in an era where education is being transformed into future education due to the 4th industry. In the KFL (Korean as a Foreign Language) situation encountered by international students, they suffer from difficulties in university mathematics due to communication problems due to lack of language ability, which is one of the stress factors for cultural adaptation in the Korean language education program. To solve this problem, we analyzed ESL programs in English-speaking countries and KSL programs in Korea to set educational goals, curriculum, and educational methods to achieve goals for international students, and to establish curriculum and learning processes. Therefore, the Korean language education program (KSL program) for foreign students in the Korean language curriculum should also be supplemented by accepting the advantages of setting accurate goals for the ESL program and linking it with university graduation in the curriculum of English-speaking countries. In addition, for international students to learn Korean, an integrated Korean language education course and management system using IT suitable for the 4th industrial age is needed.
