We forecast the US oil consumption level taking advantage of google trends. The google trends are the search volumes of the specific search terms that people search on google. We focus on whether proper selection of google trend terms leads to an improvement in forecast performance for oil consumption. As the forecast models, we consider the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and the structured regularization method for large vector autoregressive (VAR-L) model of Nicholson et al. (2017), which select automatically the google trend terms and the lags of the predictors. An out-of-sample forecast comparison reveals that reducing the high dimensional google trend data set to a low-dimensional data set by the LASSO and the VAR-L models produces better forecast performance for oil consumption compared to the frequently-used forecast models such as the autoregressive model, the autoregressive distributed lag model and the vector error correction model.
The Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models determine the future state of the weather by forcing current weather conditions into the atmospheric models. The NWP models approximate mathematically the physical dynamics by nonlinear differential equations; however these approximations include uncertainties. The errors of the NWP estimations can be related to the initial and boundary conditions and model parameterization. Development in the meteorological forecast models did not solve the issues related to the inevitable biases. In spite of the efforts to incorporate all sources of uncertainty into the forecast, and regardless of the methodologies applied to generate the forecast ensembles, they are still subject to errors and systematic biases. The statistical post-processing increases the accuracy of the forecast data by decreasing the errors. Error prediction of the NWP models which is updating the NWP model outputs or model output statistics is one of the ways to improve the model forecast. The regression methods (including linear, polynomial and scaling regression) are applied to the present study to improve the real time forecast skill. Such post-processing consists of two main steps. Firstly, regression is built between forecast and measurement, available during a certain training period, and secondly, the regression is applied to new forecasts. In this study, the WRF real-time forecast data, in comparison with the observed data, had systematic biases; the errors related to the NWP model forecasts were reflected in the underestimation of the meteorological data forecast by the WRF model. The promising results will indicate that the post-processing techniques applied in this study improved the meteorological forecast data provided by WRF model. A comparison between various bias correction methods will show the strength and weakness of the each methods.
There are several methods of peak-shaving, which reduces grid power demand, electricity bought from electricity utility, through lowering "demand spike" during On-Peak period. An optimization method using linear programming is proposed, which can be used to perform peak-shaving of grid power demand for grid-connected PV+ system. Proposed peak shaving method is based on the forecast data for electricity load and photovoltaic power generation. Results from proposed method are compared with those from On-Off and Real Time methods which do not need forecast data. The results also compared to those from ideal case, an optimization method which use measured data for forecast data, that is, error-free forecast data. To see the effects of forecast error 36 error scenarios are developed, which consider error types of forecast, nMAE (normalizes Mean Absolute Error) for photovoltaic power forecast and MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) for load demand forecast. And the effects of forecast error are investigated including critical error scenarios which provide worse results compared to those of other scenarios. It is shown that proposed peak shaving method are much better than On-Off and Real Time methods under almost all the scenario of forecast error. And it is also shown that the results from our method are not so bad compared to the ideal case using error-free forecast.
In this paper, we attempted to produce the cloud forecast that use the numerical weather prediction(NWP) MM5 for objective cloud forecast. We presented two methods for cloud forecast. One of them used total cloud mixing ratio registered to sum(synthesis) of cloud-water and cloud-ice grain mixing ratio those are variables related to cloud among NWP result data and the other method that used relative humidity. An experiment was carried out period from 23th to 24th July 2004. According to the sequence of comparing the derived cloud forecast data with the observed value, it was indicated that both of those have a practical use possibility as cloud forecast method. Specially in this Case study, cloud forecast method that use total cloud mixing ratio indicated good forecast availability to forecast of the low level clouds as well as middle and high level clouds.
In this study, we analyzed and developed the monitoring system in order to confirm the effect of observations on forecast sensitivity on ensemble-based data assimilation. For this purpose, we developed the Ensemble Forecast Sensitivity to observation (EFSO) monitoring system based on Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) system coupled with Korean Integrated Model (KIM). We calculated 24 h error variance of each of observations and then classified as beneficial or detrimental effects. In details, the relative rankings were according to their magnitude and analyzed the forecast sensitivity by region for north, south hemisphere and tropics. We performed cycle experiment in order to confirm the EFSO result whether reliable or not. According to the evaluation of the EFSO monitoring, GPSRO was classified as detrimental observation during the specified period and reanalyzed by data-denial experiment. Data-denial experiment means that we detect detrimental observation using the EFSO and then repeat the analysis and forecast without using the detrimental observations. The accuracy of forecast in the denial of detrimental GPSRO observation is better than that in the default experiment using all of the GPSRO observation. It means that forecast skill score can be improved by not assimilating observation classified as detrimental one by the EFSO monitoring system.
Medium-range forecast is highly dependent on ensemble forecast data. However, operational weather forecasters have not enough time to digest all of detailed features revealed in ensemble forecast data. To utilize the ensemble data effectively in medium-range forecasting, representative weather patterns in East Asia in this study are defined. The k-means clustering analysis is applied for the objectivity of weather patterns. Input data used daily Mean Sea Level Pressure (MSLP) anomaly of the ECMWF ReAnalysis-Interim (ERA-Interim) during 1981~2010 (30 years) provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Using the Explained Variance (EV), the optimal study area is defined by 20~60°N, 100~150°E. The number of clusters defined by Explained Cluster Variance (ECV) is thirty (k = 30). 30 representative weather patterns with their frequencies are summarized. Weather pattern #1 occurred all seasons, but it was about 56% in summer (June~September). The relatively rare occurrence of weather pattern (#30) occurred mainly in winter. Additionally, we investigate the relationship between weather patterns and extreme weather events such as heat wave, cold wave, and heavy rainfall as well as snowfall. The weather patterns associated with heavy rainfall exceeding 110 mm day-1 were #1, #4, and #9 with days (%) of more than 10%. Heavy snowfall events exceeding 24 cm day-1 mainly occurred in weather pattern #28 (4%) and #29 (6%). High and low temperature events (> 34℃ and < -14℃) were associated with weather pattern #1~4 (14~18%) and #28~29 (27~29%), respectively. These results suggest that the classification of various weather patterns will be used as a reference for grouping all ensemble forecast data, which will be useful for the scenario-based medium-range ensemble forecast in the future.
This study is intended to investigate that it is possible to analyze the public awareness and satisfaction of the weather forecast service provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) through social media data as a way to overcome limitations of the questionnaire-based survey in the previous research. Sentiment analysis and association rule mining were used for Twitter data containing opinions about the weather forecast service. As a result of sentiment analysis, the frequency of negative opinions was very high, about 75%, relative to positive opinions because of the nature of public services. The detailed analysis shows that a large portion of users are dissatisfied with precipitation forecast and that it is needed to analyze the two kinds of error types of the precipitation forecast, namely, 'False alarm' and 'Miss' in more detail. Therefore, association rule mining was performed on negative tweets for each of these error types. As a result, it was found that a considerable number of complaints occurred when preventive actions were useless because the forecast predicting rain had a 'False alarm' error. In addition, this study found that people's dissatisfaction increased when they experienced inconveniences due to either unpredictable high winds and heavy rains in summer or severe cold in winter, which were missed by weather forecast. This study suggests that the analysis of social media data can provide detailed information about forecast users' opinion in almost real time, which is impossible through survey or interview.
Retail sales forecast is a special area of forecasting. Its unique characteristics call for unique data models and treatment, and unique forecasting processes. In this paper, we will address lessons learned and challenges encountered in retail sales forecast from a practical and technical perspective. In particular, starting with the data models of retail sales data, we proceed to address issues existing in estimating and processing each component in the data model. We will discuss how to estimate the multi-seasonal cycles in retail sales data, and the limitations of the existing methodologies. In addition, we will talk about the distinction between business events and forecast events, the methodologies used in event detection and event effect estimation, and the difficulties in compound event detection and effect estimation. For each of the issues and challenges, we will present our solution strategy. Some of the solution strategies can be generalized and could be helpful in solving similar forecast problems in different areas.
