  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of heat sinks for an electronic telecommunication system by adequate natural convection. Heat generation rates of electronic components and the temperature distributions of heat sinks and surrounding air are analyzed experimentally and numerically. In order to perform the heat transfer analysis for the thermal design of telecommunication system a program is developed. The program used the graphic user interface environment to determine the arrangement of heat sources, interior fan capacity, and heat sink configuration. The simulation results showed that the heat sinks were able to achieve a cooling capacity of up to 230W at the maximum temperature difference of $19^{\circ}C$. To verify the results from the numerical simulation, an experiment was conducted under the same condition as the numerical simulation, and their results were compared. The design program gave good prediction of the effects of various parameters involved in the design of a heat sinks for an electronic telecommunication system.

  • This study presents an idea of using analogy concept to the heat transfer studies regarding the HTGR development. Theoretical backgrounds regarding the idea were reviewed. In order to investigate the predictability of a mass transfer system for heat transfer system phenomenology, an electroplating system coupled with a limiting current technique was adopted. Test facilities for laminar forced convection and natural convections under laminar and turbulent conditions were constructed, for which heat transfer correlations are known. The test results showed a close agreement between mass transfer and heat transfer systems, which is an encouraging indication of the validity of the analogy theory and the experimental methodology adopted. This paper shows the potential of the experimental method that validates the little-understood heat transfer phenomena, even in complex geometries such as HTGR.

  • In order to improve the performance of heat exchanger, fluidized bed is often employed. The experiments are carried out in fluidized double pipe parallel flow heat exchanger in which finned tube is vertically immersed. And the heat transfer coefficients between the heated tube and fluidized bed of alumina beads(dp=0.41, 0.54, 0.65, 0.77mm) are calculated as a function of air fluidized velocity and pumping power. The effects of particle size, static bed height and pumping power on the heat transfer coefficients are investigated. And the heat transfer coefficients are compared with that of single phase forced convection heat exchanger. In particular, the heat transfer performance of each type heat exchanger is evaluated in relation to the pumping power.

  • In this study, heat transfer characteristics of vertical fixed bed with air flowing through were experimentally investigated. The experiments were conducted for cases where heat was transfer steady state conditions from an immersed cylindrical heated to the surrounding fixed ved of steel balls. Based on the experimental data, the optimum conditions for heat transfer augmentation have been determined and shows in empirical forms. For the same power loss, comparison of heat transfer effect between the fixed bed and single phase forced convection device indicates that both miniaturization of heat exchange device and heat transfer augmentation at low flow velocity are possible by application of the fixed bed to heat exchangers. The present results could provide a useful design information for the heat exchangers where fixed beds are used.

  • With uniform heat generation within the wall of the cylinder placed in a cross flow, heat flows by conduction in the circumferential direction due to the asymmetric nature of the fluid flow around the perimeter of the cylinder. The circumferential heat flow affects the wall temperature distribution to such an extent that in some cases significantly different results may be obtained for geometrically similar surfaces. In the present investigation, the effects of circumferential wall heat conduction on local convective heat transfer is investigated for the case of forced convection around horizontal cylinder in cross flow of air. Two-dimensional temperature distribution $T_w$/(${\gamma}$,${\theta}$) is presented through the numerical analysis. The one-dimensional and two-dimensional solutions are in good agreement with experimental results of local heat transfer coefficients.

  • In this study, the experiment with 2rows-2columns fin-tube heat exchanger under forced convection and frosting condition is performed. The influence of each operating condition(the temperature of air, the humidity of air, the velocity of air, the temperature of coolant) on the growth of frost layer, air-side pressure drop, and characteristics of heat transfer is investigated. The experimental results show that the frost thickness increases rapidly in the early stage of frost formation and increases linearly after sometime. The frost thickness increases with the increase of the inlet air humidity and velocity and the decrease of inlet air temperature and coolant temperature. It is also found that the total energy transfer rate increases with the increase of inlet air temperature and velocity and with the decrease of inlet air humidity and coolant temperature.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer experiments were conducted with two small diameter(ø7.5, ø4.0) tubes. Comparison with existing in-tube condensation heat transfer correlations indicated that the correlations overpredict the present data. For example, Akers correlation overpredicts the data upto 104%. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of the ø4.0 I.D. tube was smaller than that of the ø7.5 I.D tube; at the mass velocity of 300kg/$m^2$s, the difference was 12%. The pressure drop data of the small diameter tubes ware highly(two to six times) overpredicted by the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation. Subcooled forced convection heat transfer test confirmed that Gnielinski's single phase heat transfer correlation predicted the data reasonably well.

  • The forced convection heat transfer performance of a twist-vane spacer grid for a dual-cooled annular fuel assembly was examined experimentally. The twist-vane spacer grid was uniquely designed to enhance mixing inside subchannels and mixing between adjacent subchannels. For testing, a $4{\times}4$ square-arrayed rod bundle with narrow gaps between rods was prepared as the dual-cooled annular fuel assembly to be simulated. The pitch-to-rod diameter ratio of simulated dual-cooled annular fuel assembly was 1.08. The experiments were performed under the following conditions: axial bulk velocity, 1.5 m/s and heat flux, $26kW/m^2$. With regard to the circumferential temperature distribution, the lowest rod-wall temperatures upstream and downstream were measured at the subchannel center and the position toward the tip of twist-vane, respectively. With regard to the axial temperature distribution, behind the twist-vane spacer grid, the rod-wall temperature decreased drastically, and the Nusselt number was enhanced by up to 56 %. The present measured data indicate that the twist-vane spacer grid can effectively improve the forced convection heat transfer in the dual-cooled annular fuel assembly with narrow gaps.

  • This paper presents a experimental study of two-phase flow boiling of FC-72 in multi channels. Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients are obtained with mass flux ranging from 152.9 to $353.9kg/m^2s$ and heat flux from 5.6 to $46.1kW/m^2$. The experimental results show that the heat transfer is governed by nucleate boiling mechanism in the low heat flux region. However, it is found that the effects of nucleate boiling and forced convection boiling are combined as the heat flux increases. A new correlation to predict the heat transfer coefficient is developed by using the dimensionless number such as Reynolds number, Weber number, boiling number. This correlation shows good predictive accuracy against the measured data.
