Damages to buildings affected by a near-fault strong ground motion are largely attributed to the vertical component of the earthquake resulting in column failures, which could lead to disproportionate building catastrophic collapse in a progressive fashion. Recently, considerable interests are awakening to study effects of earthquake vertical components on structural responses. In this study, detailed modeling and time-history analyses of a 12-story code-conforming reinforced concrete moment frame building carrying the gravity loads, and exposed to once only the horizontal component of, and second time simultaneously the horizontal and vertical components of an ensemble of far-field and near-field earthquakes are conducted. Structural responses inclusive of tension, compression and its fluctuations in columns, the ratio of shear demand to capacity in columns and peak mid-span moment demand in beams are compared with and without the presence of the vertical component of earthquake records. The influences of the existence of earthquake vertical component in both exterior and interior spans are separately studied. Thereafter, the correlation between the increase of demands induced by the vertical component of the earthquake and the ratio of a set of earthquake record characteristic parameters is investigated. It is shown that uplift initiation and the magnitude of tensile forces developed in corner columns are relatively more critical. Presence of vertical component of earthquake leads to a drop in minimum compressive force and initiation of tension in columns. The magnitude of this reduction in the most critical case is recorded on average 84% under near-fault ground motions. Besides, the presence of earthquake vertical components increases the shear capacity required in columns, which is at most 31%. In the best case, a direct correlation of 95% between the increase of the maximum compressive force and the ratio of vertical to horizontal 'effective peak acceleration (EPA)' is observed.
In this paper hardened SCM440 material and annealed SCM440 material are for cutting experiments by the cutting con-dition which is chosen respectively by tool three components of cutting force are recorded using multicorder, Then the surface roughness for various force are measured by Roughness Tester. The results of the experiment are summarized as follow. The hardened material cut by ceramic tool(BX20) gives the highest radial component values among the cutting resistance radial components is increased higher for the higher cutting speed even though vertical component and axial component tend to decrease. But when the annealed material was cut increase in cutting speed results in the increase of three component forces. Since ceramic insert tip used the experiment hardly affect Built-up Edge and heat the cutting resistance decrease slightly regardless of the increased of cutting speed. The hardened material has higher three compo-nent force value than the annealed material because the material of high hardness is increased cutting resistance. The low-est cutting forces for hardened material and annealed material are shown in the cutting speed of 60m/min and 180m/min. respectively.
The dependence of the rheological properties of blood on shape, aggregation, and deformability of red blood cells (RBCs) has been investigated using hybrid systems by coupling fluid with solid models. We present a simple approach for simulating blood as a multi-component fluid, in which RBCs are modeled as droplets of acquired biconcave shape. We used lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) due to its excellent numerical stability as a simulation tool. The model enables us to control the droplet static shape by imposing non-isotropic surface tension force on the interface between the two components. The use of the proposed non-isotropic surface tension method is justified by the Norris hypothesis. This hypothesis states that the shape of the RBC is due to a non-uniform interfacial surface tension force acting on the RBC periphery. This force is caused by the unbalanced distribution of the lipid molecules on the surface of the RBC. We also used the same concept to investigate the dynamic shape change of the RBC while flowing through the microvasculature, and to explore the physics of the Fahraeus, and the Fahraeus-Lindqvist effects.

The motion of a system composed of a plate, constant springs and varying dampers is considered when the system is subject to harmonic force. Letting the frequencies of harmonic force and damper variation ${\Large f}_1\;and\;{\Large f}_2$ respectively, the displacement at the center of the plate has the strongest component at frequency ${\Large f}_1$. The angular displacement of the plate has strong components at ${\Large f}_1-{\Large f}_2$ and the natural frequency of the rotational mode of the system. If these two frequencies coincide, the plate oscillates with almost single frequency and a large amplitude. Part of these simulation results are proved analytically.

A new diagnosis model was constructed by combining atomic force microscopy (AFM), wavelet, and neural network. Plasma faults were characterized by filtering AFM-measured etch surface roughness with wavelet. The presented technique was evaluated with the data collected during the etching of silicon oxynitride thin film. A total of 17 etch experiments were conducted. Applying wavelet to AFM, surface roughness was detailed into vertical, horizon%at, and diagonal components. For each component, neural network recognition models were constructed and evaluated. Comparisons revealed that the vertical component-based model yielded about 30% improvement in the recognition accuracy over others.
This paper presents some physical evidences indicating that reduced friction occurs in an cryogenic machining process, in which LN2 is applied selectively in well-controlled jets to the selected cutting zone. In machining tests, cryogenic machining reduced the force component in the feed direction, indicating that the chip slides on the tool rake face with lower friction. This study also found that the effectiveness of LN2 lubrication depends on the approach how LN2 is applied regarding cutting forces related.
