  • This paper presents the effects of a virtual mass with a low-pass filter on the stability boundary of a virtual spring in the haptic system. In general, a haptic system consists of a haptic device, a sampler, a virtual impedance model and zero-order-hold. The virtual impedance is modeled as a virtual spring and a virtual mass. However the high-frequency noise due to the sampling time and the quantization error of sampled data may be generated when an acceleration is measured to compute the inertia force of the virtual mass. So a low-pass filter is needed to prevent the unstable behavior due to the high-frequency noise. A finite impulse response (FIR) filter is added to the measurement process of the acceleration and the effects on the haptic stability are simulated. According to the virtual mass with the FIR filter and the sampling time, the stability boundary of the virtual spring is analyzed through the simulation. The maximum available stiffness to guarantee the stable behavior is reduced, but simulation results still show that the stability boundary of the haptic system with the virtual mass is larger than that of the haptic system without the virtual mass.

  • Thin films of $Eu(TTA)_3(phen)$, which was known to show red-light emitting properties, were deposited under various deposition condition. The thickness, surface morphology, and photoluminescence(PL) were measured with ${\alpha}$-step profiler, Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM), and PL measurement apparatus. It was found that the thickness of $Eu(TTA)_3(phen)$ film can be controlled precisely by adjusting the amounts of $Eu(TTA)_3(phen)$ in the boat. As the thickness of these films increases, the surface roughness also increases. A structure of $Al/Eu(TTA)_3(phen)(850{\AA})/TPD(600{\AA})/ITO$ was fabricated, Electroluminescence(EL) spectrum of which shows the peak at the wavelength of 618nm.

  • Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) were welded by a combination of a diode laser and a CNC machining center. Laser beam delivered through the transparent PC and was absorbed in an opaque ABS. Polymers were melted and joined by absorbed and conducted heat. Experiments were carried out by varying working distance from 44mm to 50mm for the focus spot diameter control, laser input power from 10W to 25W, and scanning speed from 100 to 400mm/min. The weld bead and cross-section were analyzed for weld quality, and tensile results were presented through the joint force measurement. With focus distance at 48mm, laser power with 20W, and welding speed at 300mm/min, experimental results showed the best welding quality which bead size was measured to be 3.75mm. The shear strength at the given condition was $22.8N/mm^2$. Considering tensile strength of ABS is $43N/mm^2$, shear strength was sufficient to hold two materials. A single process was possible in a CNC machining system, surface processing, hole machining and welding. As a result, the process cycle time was reduced to 25%. Compared to a typical process, specimens were fabricated in a single process, with high precision.

  • Inspired by the specific amino acid sequence Asn-Pro-Ala (NPA) of water channel aquaporins (AQPs), we fabricated polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes by introducing reduced glutathione (GSH) in interfacial polymerization (IP) method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential and static water contact angle measurement were employed to characterize the chemical composition, morphology, electronegativity and hydrophilicity of the NF membranes. The water flux of GSH/PIP-TMC NF membrane reached $32.00L\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$ at 0.2 MPa, which was approximately twice than that of pristine PIP-TMC NF membrane when the ratio of GHS to piperazidine (PIP) was 40% during IP process. More water channels were built as GSH was embedded into PA layer. The fabricated NF membranes also took on potent rejection for dyes and $Na_2SO_4$. This study presents a simple and facile method to simulate water channels-based biological materials which may find potential application in water treatment.

  • The rapid technology developments in smartphones have created a significant opportunity for their use in structural live load measurements. This paper presents extensive experiments conducted in two stages to investigate this opportunity. Shaking table tests were carried out in the first stage using selected popular smartphones to measure the sinusoidal waves of various frequencies, the sinusoidal sweeping, and earthquake waves. Comparison between smartphone measurements and real inputs showed that the smartphones used in this study gave reliable measurements for harmonic waves in both time and frequency domains. For complex waves, smartphone measurements should be used with caution. In the second stage, three-dimensional motion capture technology was employed to explore the capacity of smartphones for measuring the movement of individuals in walking, bouncing and jumping activities. In these tests, reflective markers were attached to the test subject. The markers' trajectories were recorded by the motion capture system and were taken as references. The smartphone measurements agreed well with the references when the phone was properly fixed. Encouraged by these experimental validation results, smartphones were attached to moving participants of this study. The phones measured the acceleration near the center-of-mass of his or her body. The human-induced loads were then reconstructed by the acceleration measurements in conjunction with a biomechanical model. Satisfactory agreement between the reconstructed forces and that measured by a force plate was observed in several instances, clearly demonstrating the capability of smartphones to accurately assist in obtaining human-induced load measurements.

  • Interest in new and renewable energies like solar energy and wind energy is increasing throughout the world due to the rapidly expanding energy consumption and environmental reasons. An essential requirement for wind force power generation is estimating the size of wind energy accurately. Wind energy is estimated usually using meteorological data or field measurement. This study attempted to estimate wind energy density using meteorological data on daily mean wind speed and the Weibull parameters in Seoul, a representative inland city where over 60% of 15 story or higher apartments in Korea are situated, and Busan, Incheon, Ulsan and Jeju that are major coastal cities in Korea. According to the results of analysis, the monthly mean probability density distribution based on the daily mean wind speed agreed well with the monthly mean probability density distribution based on the Weibull parameters. This finding suggests that the Weibull parameters, which is highly applicable and convenient, can be utilized to estimate the wind energy density distribution of each area. Another finding was that wind energy density was higher in coastal cities Busan and Incheon than in inland city Seoul.

  • This study examined the charge carrier photogeneration and hole transport properties of blends of poly (9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), $\pi$-conjugated polymer, with different weight proportions (0~29.4 wt%) of (PEA)$VOPO_4{\cdot}H_2O$ (PEA: phenethylammonium cation), a novel organic-inorganic hybrid material, using IR, UV-Vis, and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), steady state photocurrent (SSPC) measurement, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The SSPC measurements showed that the photocurrent of PVK was reduced by approximately three orders of magnitude by the incorporation of a small amount (~12.5 wt%) of (PEA) $VOPO_4{\cdot}H_2O$, suggesting that hole transport occurred through the PVK carbazole groups, whereas a reverse trend was observed at high proportions (>12.5 wt%) of (PEA)$VOPO_4{\cdot}H_2O$, suggesting that transport occurred via (PEA)$VOPO_4{\cdot}H_2O$ molecules. The transition to a trap-controlled hopping mechanism was explained by the difference in ionization potential and electron affinity of the two compounds as well as the formation of charge percolation threshold pathways.

  • This study aimed to visually compare the implementation of digital virtual fabrics for stretch fabrics mainly used in clothing that closely touch the body, using CLO. A digital fabric was used in CLO after measuring the weight, thickness, bending, and tensile force of five adhering clothing fabrics using a CLO fabric kit. The visual similarity of draftability was compared by measuring the area of the bending angle and the shape of the wrinkles of the real and digital fabric. A comparison of the bending angles showed that Fabric A was -0.75° and Fabric D was -2.5°, showing slightly lower drape properties than the real fabric. Meanwhile, Fabric B was 2.75°, Fabric C was 2.13°, and Fabric E was 1.375°, showing slightly higher drape properties in the vertical direction than the real fabric. Comparing the widths of the drape shapes, Fabric A was 0.77%, Fabric B was 1.27%, Fabric C was 0.06%, and Fabric E was 1.48%, which showed a slight difference. Fabric D showed a difference of 3.17% and was implemented where the digital fabric spread a little wider. As a result, the stretch fabric was visually expressed similarly to the real fabric as a whole in CLO. For 3D virtual clothing technology to be used widely in the close clothing industry in the future, more research on real clothing is needed.

  • In this paper, we investigated the vertical alignment characteristics of liquid crystals (LCs) on fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs). For comparison, a commercialized homeotropic polyimide (PI) layer was used as an LC alignment layer. We confirmed the successful deposition of FSAMs and the change of FSAMs before and after rubbing treatment through contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy. The optical transmittance spectrum of the FSAMs is similar to that of the homeotropic PI layer, which is a superior optical characteristic applicable to LC devices. When FSAMs were applied to the vertically aligned (VA) LC cell, uniform and vertical LC alignments were achieved. In addition, the voltage-transmittance characteristic of VA LC cell with FSAMs was superior to that of VA LC cell with the conventional homeotropic PI layers. These results indicate that the FSAMs are suitable as the homeotropic LC alignment layer for enhanced LC devices.

  • In this paper, an inverse approach based on uniform load surface (ULS) is presented for structural damage localization and quantification. The ULS is excellent approximation for deformed configuration of a structure under distributed unit force applied on all degrees of freedom. The ULS make use of natural frequencies and mode shapes of structure and in mathematical point of view is a weighted average of mode shapes. An objective function presented to damage detection is discrepancy between the ULS of monitored structure and numerical model of structure. Solving this objective function to find minimum value yields damage's parameters detection. The teaching-learning based optimization algorithm has been employed to solve inverse problem. The efficiency of present damage detection method is demonstrated through three numerical examples. By comparison between proposed objective function and another objective function which make use of natural frequencies and mode shapes, it is revealed present objective function have faster convergence and is more sensitive to damage. The method has good robustness against measurement noise and could detect damage by using the first few mode shapes. The results indicate that the proposed method is reliable technique to damage detection in structures.
