The development of flexible automation in the manufacturing industry is concerned with production activities performed by unmanned machining system. A major topic relevant to metal-cutting operations is monitoring tool wear, which affects process efficiency and product quality, and implementing automatic tool replacements. In this paper, the measurement of the cutting force components has been found to provide a method for an in-process detection of tool wear. Cutting force components are divided into static and dynamic components in this paper, and the static components of cutting force have been used to detect flank wear. To eliminate the influence of variations in cutting conditions, tools, and workpiece materials, the force modeling is performed for various cutting conditions. The normalized force disparities are defined in this paper, and the relationships between normalized disparity and flank wear are established. Finally, Artificial neural network is used to learn these relationships and detect tool wear. According to the proposed method, the static force components could provide the effective means to detect flank wear for varying cutting conditions in turning operation.

In this study, a modified model for prediction of cutting force components in down end milling process is presented. Using this cutting force components of 4-tooth endmills with various helix angles have been predicted. Predicted values of cutting force components are well coincide with the measured ones. As helix angle increases overlapping effects of the active cutting edges increase and as a result the amplitudes of cutting force components decrease.

When the seismic stability of quay walls is analyzed, the magnitudes of force components acting on quay walls during earthquakes and the phase relations among these force components must be properly evaluated. In general, force components include inertia force of the quay wall, lateral earth force, and water force. The magnitude and the phase relation of each force component vary according to the magnitude of the excess pore pressures developed in backfill soils of the quay wall. The dynamic thrust mobilized at the contact surface between the backfill soil and the wall develops as a result of the interactions among these force components. We propose a simple model to evaluate the magnitude and phase variation of the dynamic thrust on the back of the wall in terms of the excess pore pressure. The proposed model can predict the dynamic thrust by summing the magnitudes of farce components calculated from design equations for seismic pressures on the wall. The proposed model was verified by comparing its results with the results from a series of shaking table tests.

This paper describes the design of a 6-component force/moment calibration machine with having the maximum capacities of 500 N in forces and 50 Nm in moments. To be used for the characteristic of a multi-component load cell. this machine consists of a body, a fixture, a force generating system, a moment generating system and weights. We have also evaluated the accuracy of the calibration machine. Test results show that the expanded relative uncertainty for force components $\pmFx,\;\pmFy\;and\;moment\;components\;\pmMx,\;\pmMy\;are\;less\; than\;8.6\times10^{-4}$, and force components +Fz, -Fz and moment components $\pmMz\;is\;less\;than\;1.6\times10^{-3},\;2.0\times10^{-5},\;1.7\times10^{-3}$ respectively.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the potential injury via analyzing ground reaction force components that were resulted from a prolonged-run-induced fatigue. For the present study, passive and active components of the vertical ground reaction force were determined from time and frequency domain. Shear components of GRF also were calculated from time and frequency domain. Twenty subjects with rear foot contact aged 20 to 30, no experience in injuries of the extremities, were requested to run on the instrumented tread-mill for 160 minutes at their preference running speed. GRF signals for 10 strides were collected at 5, 35, 65, 95, 125, and 155 minute during running. In conclusions, there were no significant difference in the magnitude of passive force, impact load rate, frequency of the passive and active components in vertical GRF between running times except the magnitude of active force (p<.05). The magnitude of active force was significantly decreased after 125 minute run. The magnitude of maximum peak and maximum frequency of the mediolateral GRF at heel strike and toe-off have not been changed with increasing running time. The time up to the maximum peak of the anteroposterior at heel-strike moment tend to decrease (p<.05), but the maximum peak and frequency of that at heel and toe-off moment didn't depend significantly on running time.

Changes of the surface and interface tension with temperature for washing liquids and alkanes were measured by FACE surface tensiometer. Using the extended Fowkes' equation, the dispersion and polar force components of the surface tension were estimated. The results were as follows : 1. The surface tensions of washing liquids and alkanes decreased almost linearly with the increase of temperature. 2. The interface tensions of 0.25% DBS/alkane increased slowly with the increase of temperature. In the case of nonionic surfactant solutions, however, the interface tensions with alkanes varied with the number of hydrophilic ethylene oxide(EO) groups. 3. Of the surface tension of water at $20^{\circ}C$, the dispersion force component was 25.3 dyn/cm and the polar force component was 47.8 dyn/cm. As the temperature increased, both the polar and dispersion force components decreased in a similar fashion. 4. The dispersion force component of surface tension of 0.25% DBS solution was 30.0 dyn/cm, and the polar force component was 2.2 dyn/cm at $20^{\circ}C$. The two components decreased with the increase of temperature. 5. As the temperature increased, the dispersion force component of surface tension decreased and the polar force component increased significantly for 0.25% NPPG-7.5EO solution. In the case of 025% NPPG-10EO, both the dispersion and polar force components decreased slowly, but the polar force component is expected to increase from $60^{\circ}C$. However, the polar force component of surface tension decreased with the increase of temperature for 025% NPPG-15EO solution, and at the temperature higher than $60^{\circ}C$ the surface tension is expected to be composed of only dispersion force component.

In this paper, a mechanical probe for CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) with a three-axis force-sensing unit is proposed, which is capable of measuring an actual contact position without the lobbing effect and the pre-travel error. The force-sensing unit detects the external force, which is act on the stylus of CMM during the measuring process. Thus, the contact point of the stylus of CMM can be estimated ken the direction of measured force components. Based on the structural analysis of the proposed CMM probe, the transformation matrix is derived and calibrated so that it shows linear relationships between the estimated force components from the output voltages and the real input forces. And, the relationships are verified through the computer simulation. The results show that the proposed mechanical probe is very useful fur detecting the contacting force components on measuring process of CMM.

This paper presents the development of a deadweight type 6-component force/moment generator for estimating characteristics of multi-component loadcell. Several new methods in moment generation are introduced in order to produce accurate force / moment and to minimize coupling effect between each force or moment components. In order to verify the reliability of the calibration system developed, estimation of the method for generating moment components and cross measurements between force or moment components are carried out utilizing a commercial torque cell and both-ends fixed beam designed in this paper.

The necessity of six axis force-torque sensors is well recognized in the fields of automatic fine assembly, deburring polishing, and automatic fish processing using robotic manipulators. The paper proposes a simple and compact elastic structure of the force-torque sensor which senses externally applied three force and three torque components. Rough surface strain distribution of the elastic structure is examined analytically, and then more accurate surface strain are obtained from finite element analysis. The compliance matrix which is a linear relationship between force components and strain measurements is obtained for the proposed sensor. Some basic principles of measuring 3 force and torque components are also presented.
