  • Virtual work in multibody systems is frequently expressed as the inner product of the virtual displacement and the resultant force at the centroid. But provided that the resultant force is converted into the equipollent forces there is no restriction on where the analysis reference point is placed. There are basically three candidate points : the centroid, joint point and the instant global origin. The traditional fully recursive formulation uses the centroid, but the present work verifies that the instant global origin always shows better efficiency (e.g. 86% CPU time of the centroid for quarter car model) and joint point shows the efficiency between that of the centroid and the instant global origin. A discussion on how important it is to define the analysis reference point properly in a fully recursive formulation is also presented.

  • Test results including the variation of propellant-inlet pressure, pulsed thrust, and environment vacuum with the accompanying thermal responses are presented for the pulse-mode operation of a set of monopropellant hydrazine thrusters producing $0.95lb_f$ of nominal steady-state thrust at an inlet pressure of 350 psia. The test data are reduced into the impulse bit, specific impulse, and force centroid that are the factors typically characterizing pulse-mode performance of small rocket engines. With a scrutiny to the performance parameters, their comparison to the reference criteria of 1 lbf standard monopropellant rocket engine are successfully made.

  • Local buckling is a major consideration in the design of thin-walled cold-formed steel sections. The main effect of local buckling in plate elements under longitudinal compressive stresses is to cause a redistribution of the stresses in which the greatest portion of the load is carried near the supporting edges of the plate junctions. The redistribution produces increased stresses near the plate junctions and high bending stresses as a result of plate flexure, leading to ultimate loads below the squash load of the section. In singly symmetric cross-sections, the redistribution of longitudinal stress caused by local buckling also produces a shift of the line of action of internal force (shift of effective centroid). The fundamentally different effects of local buckling on the behaviour of pin-ended and fixed-ended singly symmetric columns lead to inconsistencies in traditional design approaches. The paper describes local buckling and shift of effective centroid of thin-walled cold-formed steel channel columns. Tests of channel columns have been described. The experimental local buckling loads were compared with the theoretical local buckling loads obtained using an elastic finite strip buckling analysis. The shift of the effective centroid was also compared with the shift predicted using the Australian/New Zealand and American specifications for cold-formed steel structures.

  • On the stability of the cantilever beam subjected to a follower force at the free end, the influences of the translational spring and the moment of inertia of a tip mass at the free end have been studied by numerical methods. The centroid of a tip mass is offset from the free end of a Beam and is located along its extended axis to vary the value of moment of inertia of a tip mass. It is proved that as the constants of a spring supporting the free end are augmented, the critical flutter loads of the above system decrease, whereas they increase without a tip mass.

  • One of the main goals of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to utilize the energy of sensor nodes effectively and maximize the network lifetime. Thus, this paper proposed a routing protocol for WSNs based on virtual force disturbing mobile Sink node (VFMSR). According to the number of sensor nodes in the cluster, the average energy and the centroid factor of the cluster, a new cluster head (CH) election fitness function was designed. At the same time, a hexagonal fixed-point moving trajectory model with the best radius was constructed, and the virtual force was introduced to interfere with it, so as to avoid the frequent propagation of sink node position information, and reduce the energy consumption of CH. Combined with the improved ant colony algorithm (ACA), the shortest transmission path to Sink node was constructed to reduce the energy consumption of long-distance data transmission of CHs. The simulation results showed that, compared with LEACH, EIP-LEACH, ANT-LEACH and MECA protocols, VFMSR protocol was superior to the existing routing protocols in terms of network energy consumption and network lifetime, and compared with LEACH protocol, the network lifetime was increased by more than three times.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the control method of the global bending distortion caused by fabrication process of hatch-cover in a container ship. In order to do it, the transitional behavior of global bending distortion in the deck of hatch-cover during fabrication process was measured by 3-dimensional measuring instrument. From the results, the principal factor controlling the global bending distortion was identified as the bending moment associated with the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the change of the centroid axis of hatch-cover in each fabrication process. Therefore, in this study, with the predictive equations of the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the simplified thermo elastic method, the predictive method for the global bending distortion was established and verified by comparing with the measured result. Based on the results, the amount of reverse bending distortion of main stiffeners was determined to prevent the global bending distortion of hatch-cover.

  • This paper deals with shaking table tests on RC piers to evaluate the seismic performance under near fault motion. Small scale models were fabricated and axial force was applied by introducing prestress at the centroid of the column section. Mass effect of the superstructures was simulated by mass frame which was linked with a pier model by steel bars because of the limited payload of shaking table. Friction of the mass frame when it moves was minimized by special details and it was proved before tests. Scale factor of the RC piers was 4.25. Main parameters of the test were details of reinforcements. After verifying the results of shaking table tests, seismic performance was evaluated by increasing the acceleration of the near fault motion.

  • This paper proposes an approximate method to estimate member forces of columns in a rigid frame. One of the conventional methods, Cantilever Method assumes the midpoint of a column as a hinge and linear distribution of axial stresses regarding the centroid of the column areas. As a result, it shows erroneous results compared to those of matrix analysis of two frames. In this study, a new method is proposed to estimate the member forces in columns and location of hinges in columns, which can be adopted easily by a practicing engineer, and numerical examples showed improved results compared to conventional methods.
