'Jogreen' (Secale cereal L.) was developed for rye cultivars not fast heading but winter hardiness with high yields, which was open-pollinated by ten rye cultivars including 'Chochun' in 1995. Its average heading date was April 15, which was five days earlier on average compared with 'Gogu'. At harvest, the plant height of 'Jogreen' was 117 cm which was taller than 'Gogu' as much as 6 cm. The number of stems was 983 per m2, which was higher than that of Gogu (979). 'Jogreen' did not show both winter kill and powdery mildew, but showed lodging as 3 which is similar to 'Gogu'. The biomass in the dry weight base was 8.1 MT ha-1, and showing was 4% higher than 'Gogu'. The crude protein content of 'Jogreen' was 11.9%, 0.8% lower than that of 'Gogu', and the acid detergent fiber (ADF) and the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents were 36.9% and 64.5%, respectively, higher than that of 'Gogu'. The total digestible nutrients (TDN) content also was low, but the TDN content was 5.09 ton ha-1, which was higher than that of 'Gogu'. The seed productivity of 'Jogreen' was approximately 3.1 ton ha-1, which was similar to the check. 'Jogreen' was found to be resistant to winter kill and can be adapted to after-paddy-rice cultivation in all Korean provinces. 'Jogreen' is likely to lodge, therefore, farmers should follow the recommended seeding rate and fertilization rate.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of storage type and period on the quality of rye hay. The rye "Gogu" was sown on October 15, 2020, and harvested on April 22, 2021 (heading stage). The rye hay was prepared in two wrapping conditions (wrapping and unwrapping) and two storage period (3 and 6 months). In regards to their visual appearance, the forage quality score was higher in wrapped rye hay than in unwrapped rye hay. In all groups, there was no difference in appearance between inside and outside. The moisture content of wrapped rye hay was maintained at the initial level until 6 months. However, the moisture content of unwrapped rye hay was increased at 3 months of storage, and then decreased at 6 months of storage. Crude protein content was higher in wrapped rye hay than in unwrapped rye hay, whereas NDF and ADF contents were lower within wrapped rye hay than within unwrapped rye hay (p<0.05). In conclusion, wrapping rye is effective method for long-term storage that reduces the effect of external environment.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of harvesting time of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam; IRG) in spring on dry matter (DM) yield. IRG cultivars 'Kowinearly' and 'Greenfarm' were seeded at 50 kg/ha and grown on rice paddy fields. There was no difference in growth characteristics between both varieties before winter. However, cold tolerance of Kowinearly was higher than that of Greenfarm, as demonstrated by post-wintering growth characteristics. The heading date of both varieties was affected by the spring weather. The IRG was harvested three times at 5-day intervals beginning from 9 May. The DM yield of Greenfarm was 6,306; 7,335; and 8,109 kg/ha, and that of Kowinearly was 7,498; 9,196; and 10,449 kg/ha at the three consecutive harvests. The delay of the harvesting time for 5 and 10 days increased the DM yield of Greenfarm by 16% and 29% and that of Kowinearly by 23% and 39%, respectively, compared to the yield at first harvest (p < 0.05). Therefore, IRG harvest later than early to mid-May is expected to increase productivity. The feed values of Greenfarm were: 12.2% of crude protein (CP), 34.5% of acid detergent fiber (ADF), 57.7% of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 61.6% of total digestible nutrients (TDN), and 72.3% of in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD). For Kowinearly, these values were 16.4% of CP, 30.4% of ADF, 52.7% of NDF, 64.9% of TDN and 79.0% of IVDMD.

This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of the different cutting height on the chemical composition, energy production and relation of yields of Italian ryegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass swards. It was carried out on the experimental field of Livestock Experiment Station, in Suweon, from Sept. 1986 to May 1987. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Chemical composition and Van Soest fiber contents were slightly different among grasses. But were not same trend with cutting heights. At the late vegetative stage, crude protein and crude fiber content were much more in tall fescue, Ash in perennial ryegrass, E.E. and NFE in Italian ryegrass respectively. NDF, ADF, Hemicellulose, Lignin, Cellulose and Silica contents were much more in tall fescue than the others. 2. DM, DCP, TDN, StE, ME and NEL productions were appeared to high in line with Italian ryegrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. In addition 6 cm cutting height was the most production in Italian ryegrass, 15 cm cutting height was the most production in perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. 3. The much more content of crude protein, the less nonstructural carbohydrate content. The less content of NDF, the much more nonstructural carbohydrate content. Green and dry matter yield before wintering were not influence the green and dry matter yield of the late vegetative stage, but green yield before wintering influenced total green yield.

The objective of this experiment was to compare the dry matter intake, nutrients digestibility, nitrogen and energy utilization of hehage among the orchardgrass(OG) pure, orchardgrass(OG)-red clover(RC) mixture and complex rnixtures(C. mix) by Korean native goat. The results obtained were surnmerized as follows: 1. Crude protein(CP) content was higher in OG-RC and C. Mix diets than in OG pure diets(P<0.05). NDF content was higher in OG pure diets than other diets(P<0.05). But ADF, Lignin contents and gross energy did not differ among all diets. 2. Dry matter intake by Korean native goat tend to be high in OG-RC diets, and low in OG pure diets. But there was no significant difference statistically. Dry matter and cellular constituents digestibilities were higher for OG-RC and C. Mix diets than OG pure diet, but CP and NDF digestibilities were no significant difference among diets. 3. The amount of nitrogen consumed amount by Korean native goat in the OG-RC diet was higher than other diets. But, due to largely relative urinary and fecal nitrogen loss, Apparrently digested nitrogen and retained nitrogen percents were not significant difference among diets. 4. The amount of energy consumed by Korean native goat in OG-RC diet was higher than other diets. But, due to largely relative urinary and fecal energy loss, digestable energy percent was lower than C. Mix diets. But.metabolic energy percent was no significant difference among diets. Therefore, there was no significant differences among sward types for the utilization of nitrogen and energy by Korean native goats.

This study estimated the fermentation characteristics and nutrient value of corn-lablab bean mixture silages relative to corn silages. The effects of feeding corn-lablab bean mixture silages on nutrient apparent digestibility and milk production of dairy cows in northern China were also investigated. Three ruminally cannulated Holstein cows were used to determine the ruminal digestion kinetics and ruminal nutrient degradability of corn silage and corn-lablab bean mixture silages. Sixty lactating Holstein cows were randomly divided into two groups of 30 cows each. Two diets were formulated with a 59:41 forage: concentrate ratio. Corn silage and corn-lablab bean mixture silages constituted 39.3% of the forage in each diet, with Chinese wildrye hay constituting the remaining 60.7%. Corn-lablab bean mixture silages had higher lactic acid, acetic acid, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ash, Ca, ether extract concentrations and ruminal nutrient degradability than monoculture corn silage (p<0.05). Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentrations of corn-lablab bean mixture silages were lower than those of corn silage (p<0.05). The digestibility of DM, CP, NDF, and ADF for cows fed corn-lablab bean mixture silages was higher than for those fed corn silage (p<0.05). Feeding corn-lablab bean mixture silages increased milk yield and milk protein of dairy cows when compared with feeding corn silage (p<0.05). The economic benefit for cow fed corn-lablab bean mixture silages was 8.43 yuan/day/cow higher than that for that fed corn silage. In conclusion, corn-lablab bean mixture improved the fermentation characteristics and nutrient value of silage compared with monoculture corn. In this study, feeding corn-lablab bean mixture silages increased milk yield, milk protein and nutrient apparent digestibility of dairy cows compared with corn silage in northern China.

A 13-month study was conducted to determine the monthly variation of crude protein(CP), cell contents(CC), fiber fractions and mineral concentrations of paragrass [Brachiaria mutica (Forsk.) Stapf.] and stargrass (Cynodon plectostachyum Pilger) and to estimate the correlations among the nutrient fractions and climatic factors. The forage samples collected by hand plucking were found to contain CP and mineral concentrations. i.e. calcium(Ca), magnesium(Mg), potassium(K) and zinc(Zn) above the critical levels based on ruminant veeds. Monthly differences(p<0.05) were observed in all CP, CC, neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF), hemicellulose(HE), cellulose(CE) and acid detergent lignin(ADL) between the two grass species. Monthly differences(p<0.05) were also observed in all concentrations of forage Ca, K, phosphorus(P), copper(Cu) and Zn except in Mg of both grasses and K of stargrass. Species differences(p<0.05) were observed in all nutrient fractions except Mg and K concentrations. Rainfall had positive correlations to CP, P(p<0.01) and CC(p<0.05); it had negative correlations to NDF(p<0.05). ADF, CE, Ca, Cu and Zn(p<0.01). Temperature, humidity and daylength had also some correlations to various nutrient fractions.

This experiment was canied out to study -the effects of different seeding date on the yields and nutritional value of Pearl millet. Seeding dates were $S_1$,$S_2$,$S_3$,$S_4$, and $S_5$, and harvest dates were $S_1$, (7 July) and $S_2$, (18Augst), respectively. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Plant length was not influenced by seeding date at each harvest. The seeding date at $S_4$,showed the longest plant length of 90.4 an on average per year, which was longer by 17 cm compared to 73.3 cm harvested at $S_5$. 2. Total dry matter yield was not significantly different among seeding dates. Total dry matter yield in 1993 increased according to delayed seeding date from $S_1$ to $S_4$. Dry matter yield of 17.3 tonha was obtained in $S_4$. 3. The relative yield of leaf tended to increase with delayed seeding date, and varied from 60% to 69%. 4. Dry matter ratio decreased with delayed seeding date from $S_1$,(20 April) to $S_5$ (30 May), and varied from 15.6% to 12.3%. 5. Crude protein content of leaf at 1st and 2nd harvest and stem at 1st harvest were significantly different among various seeding dates. Avenge crude protein content increased with delayed seeding date from 9.0% at $S_1$ (20April) to 12.8% at (30 May) $S_5$ (30 May). 6. NDF and ADF of leaf at the 1st harvested were significantly different among seeding dates. NDF content decreased with delayed seeding date from 61.9% to 57.8%, and ADF content decreased with delayed seeding date from 34.8% to 32.2%.

An experiment was carried out to determine effect of cultivar and preservative on the characteristics and quality of baled oat(Avena sativa L.) hay after 60 days of storage. Ihe main plots consisted of the cultivars such as 'Foothill' and 'Swan', and the subplots consisted of preservatives such as commercial propionic acid(CA), lactic bacteria inoculant(LB) and control(C0). Bale temperature of 'Foothill' oat hay maintained higher than that of 'Swan' oat hay during storage. Bale temperature of oat hay treated with CA remained lowest during the earlier storage period and no significant difference was found among preservatives during the latter storage period. Visual assessment of bale of 'Swan' oat hay was better in the evaluation of mold, odor and color than that of 'Foothill' oat hay after storage. DM content of Foothill oat hay increased markedly than that of 'Swan' oat hay through the storage period. CFU(Colony fodng unit) of total viable micmrganism of oat hay bales was not quite different between preservatives, but that of lactic bacteria of 'Swan' oat hay and 'Foothill' was different by over 16 and lo4, respectively. Total nitrogen content of 'Swan' and 'Foothill' oat hay was 1.45 and 2.22%, respectively(P<0.05) and effect of preservatives on total N content was higher in the order of LB, CA, and CO. ADIN content of 'Swan' was lower than that of 'Foothill'(P
