Bioavailability and Efficiency of Ten Catechins as an Antioxidant

  • Tea is a pleasant, popular and safe beverage in the world. During the past decade, epidemiological studies have shown that tea catechins intake is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Tea provides a dietary source of health-promoting components to help humans reduce a wide variety of cancer risks and chronic diseases. The antioxidative activity of tea-derived catchins has been extensively studied. The antioxidant effect is a synergistic action between catechins e.g. EGCG, EGC, ECG, EC, pheophytins a and b, and other components in tea leaves, which aye more bioavailable for human body. Green tea has a Higher content of catechins than other kinds of tea. Green tea extract with hot water has high potential and more efficiency to reduce cancer risk than any other tea products or pure EGCG. Protein, iyon, and other food components may interfere with the bioavailability of ten catechins. Interaction of catechins with drug affects the cancer-preventive activity of some cancer-fighting medication. Further studies are required to determine the bioavailability of tea catechins and cancer-preventive functionality.

식생활비 지출규모와 가계의 사회경제적 특성간의 관계 분석 : 도시근로자 가계를 대상으로 (An Analysis of the Relationships of Food Expenditures and Household Socioeonomic Characteristics: For Urban Salary and Wage Earner Households)

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationships between food expenditures and household socio-economic characteristics. Data used were taken from the 1996 National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure Survey. This study revealed that total food expenditures for urban salary and wage earner households were 347,798 won, which accounted for 27.0 percent of the total consumption expenditures and food away from home expenditures marked for 8.4 percent of the total consumption expenditures. Household income, household size, age of household head, occupation of household head, education of household head, housing tenure, wife's employment status, gender of household head, and children's age were all important factors in predicting the food consumption expenditures for urban salary and wage earner households.

가계식생활비 지출의 결정요인 (Determinants of Household Food Consumption: Food at Home and Food Away From Home)

  • 본 연구는 우리나라 가계의 식생활비 지출행태에 관한 이해를 꾀하고자 식료품비와 외식비로 나뉘어 각각에 관한 결정요인을 비교, 분석하였다. 연구를 위하여 통계청에서 조사한 1994년 도시가계연보의 원자료를 사용하였으며, 식료품비와 외식비 지출에 대한 관련요인들의 영향력을 고찰하기 위하여 다중회귀분석이 사용되었다. 연구결과에 의하면 식료품비와 외식비 지출 모두 가계소득과 정적 상관관계를 보였으며, 주부가 취업한 경우 식료품비 지출은 비취업주부가계에 비해 적은 반면, 외식비 지출은 도리어 많은 것으로 분석되었다. 가구원수, 교육수준, 계절, 자녀의 존재 변수 등이 식료품과 외식비지출에 대해 유의한 영향력을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 가구주 나이는 식료품비에 유의한 영향을 미쳤으며, 가구주 직업은 외식비지출에 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다.

한.미 FTA가 유가공품 시장에 미치는 영향 분석: 치즈 및 버터 시장을 중심으로

  • Recently, Korea have experienced numbers of FTAs with other countries, including Chile, EFTA(European Free Trade Association), Singapore, ASEAN(Association of South-East Asian Nations), and U.S. In particular, FTA with U.S. are expected to cause huge impact on food markets as well as agricultural sector in Korea. Many researches have analyzed and discussed about the impact on agricultural sector after Korean-U.S. FTA, but very small number of studies focus on the impact of Korean-U.S. FTA on food markets. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the impact of Korea-U.S. FTA on Korean dairy market. For the numerical simulations, this paper focus on the impact on cheese and butter markets. The results of numerical analysis in the paper will be helpful for the future research, because few (maybe no) studies conduct the numerical analysis to measure the impact of Korea-U.S. FTA on Korean food market.

Development of a Quantitative Analytical Method for Determining the Concentration of Human Urinary Paraben by LC-MS/MS

  • Parabens, the esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, have been widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in cosmetic products, drugs, and processed foods and beverages. However, some parabens have been shown to have weak estrogenic effects through in vivo and in vitro studies. Because such widespread use has raised concerns about the potential human health risks associated with exposure to parabens, we developed a simultaneous analytical method to quantify 4 parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl) in human urine, by using solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. This method showed good specificity, linearity ($R^2$ > 0.999), accuracy (92.2-112.4%), precision (0.9-9.6%, CV), and recovery (95.7-102.0%). The LOQs for the 4 parabens were 1.0, 0.5, 0.2, and 0.5 ng/mL, respectively. This method could be used for quick and accurate analysis of a large number of human samples in epidemiological studies to assess the prevalence of human exposure to parabens.
