  • Food wastewater derived from three-stages methane fermentation system showed high concentrations of sCOD, T-N and $NH_{3}-N$. To treat the organic wastewater, the optimal operating conditions for high efficiency $UV/TiO_{2}$ photocotalytic system have been investigated. In the first process, wastewater was pre-treated with $FeCl_{3}. The optimum pH and concentration for coagulation were 4.0 and 2000 mg/L, respectively. Through this process, 52.6% of $COD_{cr}$ was removed. The second process was $UV/TiO_{2}$ photocatalytic reaction. The optimum conditions for the operation of $UV/TiO_{2}$ photocatalytic system developed in this lab have been studied. In this process, CODcr was removed from 2890 to 184 mg/L and T-N was removed from 2496 to 914 for 24 hours, respectively.

  • Microalga, Spirulina platensis has been cultivated in a pilot scale photo-bioreactor to treat wastewater and to produce high protein feedstocks from swine waste containing medium. 0.31(1/day) of specific growth rate and 0.170 of bioenergeric yield were obtanined from batch cultivation in 30% waster containing medium, compared to 0.71(1/day) and 0.545 from clean culture. An optimal dilution concentration was decided as 20% of working volume, based upon the cell growth and biomass productivity. The removal rate of nitrates in the wastewater was decreased as the adding concentration of wastewater was increased while the decrease of total phosphates was reversed, showing 0.33(1/day) and 0.30(1/day) of rate constants for nitrate removal in 10% addition and for phosphate removal in 30% addition, respectively. The chemical composition and amino acid profile of the biomass were superior to those of commerically available health food product, Spirulina sp.

  • The objective of this study is the removal of chromium from tannery wastewater by electrosorption on carbon prepared from lignocellulosic natural residue "peach stones' thermally treated. The followed steps for obtaining coal in chronological order were: cleaning, drying, crushing and finally its carbonization at $900^{\circ}C$. The characterization of the carbon material resulted in properties comparable to those of many coals industrially manufactured. The study of the dynamic adsorption of chromium on the obtained material resulted in a low removal rate (33.7%) without applied potential. The application of negative potentials of -0.7 V and -1.4 increases the adsorption of chromium up to 90% and 96% respectively. Whereas a positive potential of +1.4V allows desorption of the contaminant of 138%.

  • Wastewater sludge and composted food wastes were examined as the alternatives of a landfill cover for soils to eliminate the emission of VOCs. The benefit of these alternatives is in their high sorption capacity, which is 5 to 50 times higher than natural soils. After sorption is finished, biodegradation is an important mechanism in decrease of VOCs concentration. In order to investigate appropriate VOCs degradation condition, biodegradation batch experiment is being conducted with isolated strain X9-c. Both benzene and TCE were degraded only in soil with 12%(water volume/sorbent volumn) water condition. When the water condition varied from 12 to 48% in compost, optimum water conditions of composted food waste was 36%.

  • The Louisiana crawfish industry comprises the largest concentration of crustacean aquaculture in the United States. Processing plants throughout the culture region annually generate as much as 80 million pounds of peeling waste during recovery of the 15% (by weight) edible tail meat. A commercial oil extraction process for recovery of carotenoid astaxanthin from crawfish waste has been developed. Crawfish pigment in its various forms finds applications as a source of red intensifying agents for use in aquaculture and poultry industries. Crawfish shell, separated in the initial pigment extraction step, is an excellent source of chitin. Applicable physicochemical procedures for isolation of chitin from crawfish shell and its conversion to chitosan have been developed. Crawfish chitosan has been demonstrated to be both an effective coagulant and ligand-exchange column material , respectively, for recovery of valuable organic compounds from seafood processing wastewater.

  • Simultaneous treatment of food waste leachate and power generation was investigated in an air-cathode microbial fuel cell. A TCOD removal efficiency of $95.4{\pm}0.3%$ was achieved for an initial COD concentration of 2,860 mg/L. Maximum power density ranged was maximized at $1.86W/m^3$, when COD concentration varied between 60 mg/L and 2,860 mg/L. Meanwhile, columbic efficiency was determined between 1.76% and 11.07% for different COD concentrations. Cyclic voltammetric data revealed that the oxidation peak voltage occurred at -0.20 V, shifted to about -0.25 V. Moreover, a reduction peak voltage at -0.45 V appeared when organic matters were exhausted, indicating that reducible matters were produced during the decomposition of organic matters. The results showed that it was feasible to use food waste leachate as a fuel for power generation in a microbial fuel cell, and the treatment efficiency of the wastewater was satisfied.

  • This experiment was conducted to utilize the water soluble protein from the fish meal in wastewater as nitrogen source by alkaline protease producting bacteria and to investigate the culture condition of the production. G-12 and G-14 strains having the strong activity of the alkaline pretense were isolated from sea water. These strains were identified as Pseudomonas chlororaphis and Pseudomonas alcaligenes according to physiologycal characteristics, respectively. In enzyme production, galactose and casein for G-12 strain, and raffinose and the water soluble protein of the fish meal wastewater for G-14 strain was favorable as carbon and nitrogen source. An action of inhibition appeared in all of the metal salts used. The optimal temperature of enzyme production was $30^{\circ}C$ for all strains. Optimal initial pH for the enzyme formation in G-12 and G-14 strains was pH 10.0 and 8.0. When these two strains were incubated for $30\~35$ hours in the optimal production medium, the enzyme production reached at maximum.

  • We have previously developed three stage methane fermentation system capable of digesting food wastes effectively and then releasing high organic wastewater as a final product. In this study, we tried to devise an ecological water treatment system, which can efficiently remove the nitrogen and phosphorus contained in the organic wastewater. The system was made of microbiological filters, algae, and waterfleas. Of two species of alga tested, Selenastrum capricornutum showed higher growth rate and more efficiently removed the nitrogen from the wastewater than by Chlorella sp. In addition, the highest growth rate and the nitrogen removal efficiency could be obtained when high concentrations of $Mg^{2+}\; and\; Ca^{2+}$ were added to the diluted wastewater and the molar ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus was adjusted to 10 : 1. In this study the population relationship between alga and water flea was also examined in a test tube. The initial number of algal cells decreased as the waterflea population increased. However, the number of algal cells gradually increased again when waterflea population decreased partly due to the environmental resistance. From these results, it was believed that the ecological water treatment system could be used for removing the nitrogen and phosphorus from organic wastewater very effectively. Moreover, the waterflea cultured by this system as a final predator could be used as a good foodstuff for fishes.

  • Spirulina platensis NIES 39 was grown in effluents from a wastewater treatment plant utilizing activated sludge process at a pig farm to reduce pollutants and to produce feed resources. The addition of 2 g/l NaCl was required for the growth of S. platensis in the effluents with about 100 mg/l ammonia nitrogen concentration. The growth was stimulated by the addition of 2 g/l sodium bicarbonate and 4 mg/l ferrous sulfate. The microorganism grew well at pH 8~11, and the optimum pH for the growth was 10. The algal concentration of 1.1 g/l was attained after 8 days of growth at the optimum condition with the removal of 95% ammonia nitrogen and 34% phosphorus.
