The roots of Juglans mandshurica Maximowicz (Juglandaceae) have been used as a folk medicine for treatment of cancer in Korea. Several naphthoquinones and naphthalenyl glucosides from Juglans species have been reported (1-7). In the course of isolating cytotoxic compounds from the roots of this plant. we have isolated six naphthalene glycosides. four tetralone, one naphthalene carboxylic acid glucoside and nine diarylheptanoids (8-13). The fruits of various Actinidia species are known to be used as a folk remedy for treatment of various inflammatory and analgesic ailments. Effects of the ethanol extracts and fractions from the fruits of Actinidia polygama (Sieb. et Zucc.) Maxim (Actinidiaceae) were studied using various in vivo and in vtro models of inflammation in mice and rats. (omitted)

The roots of Cynanhum caudatum (Asclepiadaceae) have been used in folk medicine in Japan and China for the prevention and treatment of various geriatric diseases and also as a cardiotonic agent. Constituents of this plant have mainly been examined for glycosides: besides two steroidal alkaloids, gagaminine and gagamine which was firstly isolated by us, more than 35 polyoxypregnane glycosides and aglycones have also been identified. Gagaminine inhibits potently the hepatic aldehyde oxidase activity and lipid peroxidation in vitro. The present work deals with the comparison of antioxidative activities of gagamine, a new pregnane alkaloid, three isolated polyoxypregnanes containing a keto group at C-20 with those of gagaminine, a potent antioxidant, in order to explain the structure-activity relationships. The results of this study further prove that the cinnamoyl group of gagaminine is very important for the inhibition on the aldehyde oxidase activity while the nicotinoyl group is necessary for anti-lipid peroxidation. Besides that, the keto compounds having no ester group at C-12 were found to be more active than the others except gagaminine.

Hwa-byung is said as a Korean folk syndrome in DSM- N,and that is translated into ,Anger syndrome', In Oriental Medicine, Hwa-Byung is related with clonic emotional-stress, and include symptoms having the character of 'fire', In this case, the patient had symptoms similar with schizopmenifonn disorder, We treated the patient with Sihoukan-tang, Ssanghwa-tang and Ziunkoron. And her condition was improved through these oriental medical treatment.

Antihepatotoxic effect of dimethyl-esculetin, the major constituent of herbal drug Artemisia capillaris $T_{HUNBERG}$ (Compositae) which has long been used as folk medicine for gall stone and hepatitis in Asian country (China and Japan, except Korea) was investigated on the rabbit intoxicated with carbon-tetrachloride. Ten rabbits were divided into two parts, group A and B in five each. The group A was injected with carbon-tetrachloride, 0.1ml per kg at begining of the experiments for control. The group B was injected with carbon-tetrachloride soon after 7 days treatment of dimethyl-esculetin, 30mg per day. The results obtained in this experiment were as follows.: 1) Antihepatotoxic activity of dimethyl esuletin on the rabbits intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride has shown the serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase activity and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase activity decreased respectively. 2) The component of Artemisia capillaris, dimethyl-esculetin, has shown remarkable antihepatotoxic effect.

Macrophages play an important role in host defense against tumors by killing tumor cells. Our work is directed toward studying the effect of the extracts of Salvia plebeia on induction of antitumor activity in macrophages, since it has been usezd as a folk-medicine for the treatment of hepatitis and tumors. The ability of macrophage treated with the plant extracts to inhibit the growth of tumor cells was assessed. The Extracts of the plant induced antitumor activity and could enhance the tumoricidal activity of macrophages when used in combination with $IFN-{\gamma}$. These results suggest that Salvia plebeia extract contain immunomodulatory factors responsible for the induction of the antitumor activity.

The studies on the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were carried out to develop the domestic natural sources of the underground parts of Caragana koreana Nakai (Leguminosae), which have been used for the treatment of neuralgia, arthritis, and gout etc. in folk remedies. The methanol extract of the root was shown significant antiinflammatory effect in the paw edema induced by carrageenin, and also indicated remarkable preventive and therapeutic effects to chronic arthritis model induced by Freund's complete adjuvant in rats. It also has inhibited significantly the increase in vascular permeability and the number of writhings induced by acetic acid in mice.

Petasites japonicus (Compositae) is a perennial herb which has been used as treatment of antitussive, expectorant, sedatives, paralysis, diurectics in folk remedies. The pharmacological studies of this natural drug have not yet estabilished. So, we examined anti-lipid peroxidative effects and liver protective effect on $CCl_4$ induced lipid peroxidation and hepatotoxicity in rats. In vivo liver lipid, MeOH Ex. revealed significant increase of anti-lipid peroxidative effects according to concentration dependently. In chemical parameters obtained from serum analysis, MeOH Ex. as a increase of medicine concentration (0.25 g/kg, 0.5 g/kg, 1.0 g/kg), GOT, GPT, AlP decreased. In 0.5 g/kg GPT administered group, there was relative in GOT, AlP. Cholesterol decreased in 1.0 g/kg and 1.0 g/kg administered group, BUN decreased relatively in 1.0 g/kg administered group.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic disease of childhood. Although an improved understanding of the pathophysiology of asthma has had a positive impact on the treatment and management of the disease, there has been a gradual but significant increase in asthma mortality. Also, mother's caring type is the essential factor in management of the child with asthma. The purpose of this study is to identify and understand the caring patterns of mathers of children with Athma by Q methodology. As a research method, 35 Q-statements were collected through individual interviews and review of related literatures. 37 subjects were interviewed and the data were analyzed by the PC QUANL program with principal component analysis. The were 3 different caring types classified as follows : Type I was the therapeutic compliance obeying type, compliancing medication and preventing cold etc. Type II was the physical strengthening type, taking Chinese medicine and folk remedy etc. Type III was the environment control type, managing house and environment clearly and ventilating room air etc. Therefore, it needs considering above each type in nursing care of the family and children with asthma.
