The fog water chemistry and deposition in northern Japan were investigated by fog water and throughfall measurements in 2010. Fog water was sampled weekly by an active-string fog sampler at Lake Mashu from May to November. Throughfall measurements were conducted using rain gauges under three deciduous trees along the somma of the lake from August to October. The mean fog deposition rate (flux) was calculated using throughfall data to estimate the total fog water deposition amount for the entire sampling period. $NH_4{^+}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ were the most abundant cation and anion, respectively, in the fog water samples. A mean pH of 5.08 in the fog water, which is higher than those in rural areas in Japan, was observed. The [$NH_4{^+}$]/[$SO{_4}^{2-}$] equivalent ratio in fog water was larger than 1.0 throughout the study period, indicating that $NH_3$ gas was the primary neutralizing agent for fog water acidity. The mean rate and total amount of fog water deposition were estimated as 0.15 mm $h^{-1}$ and 164 mm, respectively. The amounts of nitrogen and sulfate deposition via fog water deposition were corresponded to those reported values of the annual deposition amounts via rainfall.
Fog deposition onto the cool-temperate deciduous forest around Lake Mashu in northern Japan was estimated by the inferential method using the parameterizations of deposition velocity and liquid water content of fog (LWC). Two parameterizations of fog deposition velocity derived from field experiments in Europe and numerical simulations using a detailed multi-layer atmosphere-vegetation-soil model were tested. The empirical function between horizontal visibility (VIS) and LWC was applied to produce hourly LWC as an input data for the inferential method. Weekly mean LWC computed from VIS had a good correlation with LWC sampled by an active string-fog collector. By considering the enhancement of fog deposition due to the edge effect, fog deposition calculated by the inferential method using two parameterizations of deposition velocity agreed with that computed from throughfall data. The results indicated that the inferential method using the current parameterizations of deposition velocity and LWC can provide a rough estimation of water input due to fog deposition onto cool-temperature deciduous forests. Limitations of current parameterizations of deposition velocity related to wind speed, evaporation loss of rain and fog droplets intercepted by tree canopies, and leaf area index were discussed.

For the purpose of collecting fog droplets as a function of size a new sampling method was developed in this study. Formation of 100$\pm$10㎛ thickness of polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) on a nuclepore filter could be successfully realized. Also applicability of particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method to the chemical analysis of size-segregated fog droplets collected on PWAF was examined experimentally with synthetic fog droplets generated from a nebulizer. Absorption capacity of S-PAAS polymeric water absorbent shows marked decreases in the range less than 1 wt% and slight decrease between 1 and 3.5 wt% of every salt concentration. Dependency of absorption capacity on pH shows the maximum at pH 7. No apparent peak which can influence the quantitative analysis of elements dissolved and suspended in fog droplets was found at PIXE spectrum of PWAF blank. PWAF kept the original shape without rupture under the PIXE analytical conditions of beam intensity for 10 to 60 nA and irradiation time of 4∼5 min. It should be said that the proposed new technique in the work is helpful to get more detailed information of fog droplets, to clarify the fog formation processes, and to develop a model of acid deposition process.
Fog water samples were collected at Chunchon, Korea, by using active fog sampler during foggy Period in fall of 1996 and 1997. The average annual foggy days at Chunchon increased from 37 days, for the yearn 1963 ∼ 1973, to 63 days , for the year 1974∼1993 that followed the construction of Lake Soyang. Volume weighted mean pH of fog water was 5.5 with a range of 4.8 to 7.0 in 1996, and 5.0 with a range of 4.1 to 6.6 in 1997. These pH values were higher than those of rain water sampled in corresponding years. However the concentration of ionic species in fog water were 26 times higher than those of rain water. The major anions in fog water were in order of SO42-, NO3- and Cl-, and their average concentrations were 1770.6meq/ml, 346.2 meq/ml, 216 meq/ml in 1996, and 901.8meq/ml, 269.6meq/ml, 141.0meq/ml in 1997, respectively. The major cations were Ca2+, NH4+, Mg2+ and K+, and their average concentrations frere 408.5meq/ml, 280.0meq/ml, 43.8meq/ml, 45.2meq/ml in 1996, and 400.4 meq/ml, 299.0meq/ml, 73.1meq/ml, 44.5meq/ml in 1997, respectively. The fraction acidity of fog water was 0.006 and that of rain water was 0.2, which means fog water was much more neutralized than rain water.
To establish the method for investigating the behavior of aerosol particles deposited on the leaf surface against fog water under natural conditions, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis and wash water analysis by ion chromatography after the washing treatment were performed using leaves of white birch collected from low part of the tree crown and the top of the tree in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Each of collected leaves was divided into two parts according to the treatment performed: leaf surface (adaxial side) was 1) untreated, and 2) washed with deionized water with a pipette. In untreated samples, many particles of various shapes, including soil particles and organic debris, were deposited on the surface. Particles containing S were found on the surface of samples collected from only low part of the tree crown. After the washing treatment, SEM-EDX analysis revealed that soil particles and particles containing S had been washed off with water, although some particles such as soil particles and organic debris still remained on the leaf surface. The major anion such as $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was detected in wash water of all samples, although the peak of S in X-ray spectra was not detected from samples collected at top of the tree. The combination of SEM-EDX analysis with wash water analysis indicated that $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was deposited on the leaf surface in dissolved state and/or in state of submicron particles. These results suggested that fog water could remove soil particles and particles containing S and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ from the leaf surfaces, but not all particles. There was no difference in sampling position in the tree crown. Our study suggested that combination with SEM-EDX analysis and wash water analysis would be effective for investigation of the behavior of particles on the leaf surface against fog water.
Chromium (Cr) films were deposited on plain carbon steel sheets by DC and RF magnetron sputtering as well as by electroplating. Effects of DC or RF sputtering power on the deposition rate and properties such as, hardness, surface roughness and corrosion-resistance of the Cr films were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microcopy (SEM) analyses were performed to investigate the crystal structure, surface roughness, thickness of the Cr films. Salt fog tests were used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the samples. The deposition rate, hardness, and surface roughness of the Cr film deposited by either DC or RF sputtering increase with the increase of sputtering power but the adhesion strength is nearly independent of the sputtering power. The deposition rate, hardness, and adhesion strength of the Cr film deposited by DC sputtering are higher than those of the Cr film deposited by RF sputtering, but RF sputtering offers smoother surface and higher corrosion-resistance. The sputter-deposited Cr film is harder and has a smoother surface than the electroplated one. The sputter-deposited Cr film also has higher corrosion-resistance than the electroplated one, which may be attributed to the smoother surface of the sputter-deposited film.
a-C:H films were coated on windows of mobile telephone by RF plasma chemical vapor deposition equipment made in our company. Thickness of the coatings is about 0.7 micrometers and they have high hardness, low friction coefficient, good adhesion, high optical transparency and chemical inertness. Knoop hardness of the diamond-like carbon films on glass substrate is 2328 kg/mm$^2$. The adherence between films and substrate is good and shows to be 69 N by scratching test. The optical performance is improved obviously owing to coat the film on it. The index of the coated windows is 2.5, transmission of visible light is larger than 90%, and transmission of ultraviolet light decreases by 30% and the ultraviolet light can be obstructed obviously. The coated glass also has self-clean effect and decontamination ability. The films have hydrophobic character and the soakage angle of water drop is larger than 90 degrees. The windows have fog-proof ability owing to eliminate the capillary phenomena in the inner surface. The physics and chemical properties of the coated windows are steady. Study indicates that the performance of a-C:H coated mobile phone windows are improved notably on wear-resistance, corrosion-proof and optical properties and it is excellent mobile windows protective coatings.
