  • In this study, focusing of ultrasonic Lamb wave by negative refraction with mode conversion from antisymmetric to symmetric mode was investigated. When a wave propagates backward by negative refraction, the energy flux is antiparallel to the phase velocity. Backward propagation of Lamb wave is quite well known, but the behavior of backward Lamb wave at an interface has rarely been investigated. A pin-type transducer is used to detect Lamb wave propagating on a steel plate with a step change in thickness. Conversion from forward to backward propagating mode leads to negative refraction and thus wave focusing. By comparing the amplitudes of received Lamb waves at a specific frequency measured at different distance between transmitter and interface, the focusing of Lamb wave due to negative refraction was confirmed.

  • The analysis of operation characteristics of a miniaturized electrostatic electron lens system called an Einzel lens was performed using a simulation tool of FCM method. The potential distributions of Einzel lenses operated both in retarding and accelerating modes show similar features. But the electric fields determined from the potential distributions show opposite directions, which results in different features in the electron beam trajectory in each mode of operation. For the same working distance, focusing voltage in the accelerating mode is higher than that in the retarding mode.

  • This study shows the vibration characteristics of an actuator with six wire-suspensions, used in optical pickups of optical disc drives (ODDs). In this paper, the vibration characteristics of this beam structure is induced mathematically. To obtain vibration modes of focusing direction, the vibration analysis is achieved in lateral and longitudinal directions of the structure. The accuracy of induced vibration characteristics is proved by comparing mode frequencies with a finite element analysis. Finally, it is shown that mode shapes can be modified by changing design parameters in mathematical expressions.

  • Guided waves inspection techniques that are different with inspection technique by bulk waves are widely used in pipe line evaluation due to advantages of long distance inspection. However, most of pipe lines at industrial fields are buried and/or coated. In this case, due to the attenuation effect from soil and/or coating material, there are a lot of difficulty on inspection by conventional ultrasonic technique. In this paper, guided waves propagating patterns are calculated with respect to excitation mode by Normal Mode Expansion(NME). Guided waves patterns based on excited by single transducer and guided wave focusing technique have employed to analyze focusing pattern on a pipe. A longitudinal mode and high order flexural modes are used with various number of transducers to determine sensitivity. Guided waves energy excited by multi transducer with focusing algorithm was successfully focused at a desired point.

  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound has evolved as the essential tool to diagnose and guide intervention procedures in people with neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Image optimization and understanding device operations are core components for ultrasound guided intervention procedure training. All ultrasound machines share the common operative features and there are various buttons for the features in the device control panel. Ultrasound "knobology" refers to the thorough understanding of imaging optimization. This review addressed basic information for the transducers, depth setting, gain and focus control, different modes focusing on brightness and doppler modes.

  • Ultra small optical drive or PCMCIA type needs a focusing actuator because or applying Blue Laser and enhancing compatibility according to disk physical specification. Based on this need, this paper presents a novel focusing actuator adapted for ultra small optical drive of PCMCIA type. The focusing actuator using Lorenz force generated consists of coil, magnets and plate springs of pivoting. The design issues of the focusing actuator are the flexibility to focus direction, the rigidity to track direction and the higher natural mode of the moving part. For settling these Issues, this paper present mechanical design, computer simulations and test results of the realized focusing actuator. Finally, suitability and usefulness of the focusing actuator was demonstrated by the comparison of simulations and test results in a view of the possibility adapted for ultra small optical drive.

  • A structural health monitoring technique for locating impact position in a composite plate is presented in this paper. The method employs a single sensor and spatial focusing properties of time reversal(TR) and inverse filtering(IF). We first examine the spatial focusing efficiency of both approaches at the impact position and its surroundings through impact experiments. The imaging results of impact localization show that the impact location can be accurately estimated in any position of the plate. Compared to existing techniques for locating impact or acoustic emission source, the proposed method has the benefits of using a single sensor and not requiring knowledge of anisotropic material properties and geometry of structures. Furthermore, it does not depend on a particular mode of dispersive Lamb waves that is frequently used in other ultrasonic testing of plate-like structures.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the detection and location of nonlinear scattering source due to the presence of fatigue crack in a laboratory specimen. The proposed technique is based on a combination of nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy(NEWS) and time reversal(TR) focusing approach. In order to focus on the nonlinear scattering position due to the fatigue crack, we employed only one transmitting transducer and one receiving transducer, taking advantage of long duration of reception signal that includes multiple linear scattering such as mode conversion and boundary reflections. NEWS technique was then used as a pre-treatment of TR for spatial focusing of reemitted second harmonic signal. The robustness of this approach was demonstrated on a cracked specimen and the nonlinear TR focusing behavior is observed on the crack interface from which the second harmonic signal was originated.

  • This paper describe numerical experiments with solitary beams in a self focusing Kerr medium with fast response. Through formal analogies, it compare this results on the phase sensitivity of beam collision with known predictions about one dimensional soliton interaction. For incoherent oblique beam interaction, there occurs a non-periodic coupled-mode type transfer of energy, resulting in complete transmission each beam through the other one.
