Purpose: To examine the effect of the solution-focused group counseling program on the nursing students' problem-solving capacity. Methods: The research design was one-group pretest-posttest design in quasi-experimental research. The subjects were 16 sophomore nursing students being in K university located in D city, Korea. The period of this research was from January 9 to February 20, 2002, from January 10 to February 21, 2003. The group counseling program that was developed by Kim, Hyeon Mi (2001) on the basis of the fundamental principles of solution-focused therapy of de Shazer, et al. (1986) and the solution-focused group counseling process proposed by Selekman (1991), LaFountain, et al. (1996) and Metcalf (1998) was used after being modified and complemented for the nursing students. The group counseling was carried out six times for 120 minutes per week. The instruments used for this study were the Problem Solving Inventory developed by Heppner and Petersen (1982) and Scaling question. Collected data were analyzed by paired t-test with SPSS program. Results: 1) Problem solving capacity increased after solution-focused group counseling program, but a significant difference was not revealed(t=0.835, p=0.057). 2) The scores of self-confidence with the problem-solving were significantly increased when it was compared with the 1st and the 6th(t=3.587, p=0.001). Conclusion: It seems that the solution-focused group counseling program should be considered as an effective nursing intervention program for the nursing students by improving self-confidence with the problem-solving. As a results, this study suggests that the specific techniques used in the solution focused therapy should be applied actively in areas of counseling and communication training for the nursing students and nurses.
1. There was significant relationship between personality traits and coping behavior. (1) Type A Group used more problem-focused and emotion-focused coping style than Type B Group (2) Non-sociable group used more emotion-focused coping style especially 'escape-avoidance' behavior than sociable group (3) Emotionally unstable group used more emotion-focused coping style especially 'distancing' and 'escape-avoidance behavior than stable group. 2. There was no significant relationship between personality traits and stress coping effect except emotional stability. 3. There was same inter-correlations among personality, coping style, and coping effect, (1) Type A was significantly correlated with sociability but not with emotional stability. (2) Problem-focused coping style was positively correlated with emotion-focused coping style. (3) Coping effect was not significantly correlated with coping style and personality traits accept emotional stability. 4. There was significant relationship between cognitive appraisal and coping style. (1) When they appraised the event 'could change or did something about it,' that used more problem-focused coping style than appraised 'had to accept.' (2) When they appraised the event ' could control before it occures.' they used more problem-focused and emotion-focused coping style than appraised it 'could not control'. (3) When they appraised the event 'had to gold back.' they used more problem-focused and emotion-focused coping style than appraised it 'had not to hold back.' (4) When they appraised the event 'happened by me.' they used more problem-focused coping style than appraised it 'happened by others.' (5) When they appraised the event 'needed to know more, 'they did not significantly use more coping behavior than appraised it 'needed not to know more.' 5. There was no significant difference except two cases in cognitive appraisal to the problem according to the personality. The two cases were as follows: (1) Sociability group appraised the event 'had to accept.' while non-sociability group appraised it 'could change or did some thing about.' (2) Emotionally stable group appraised the event 'happened by others.' while emotionally unstable group appraised it "happened by me".
The purpose of this research is to find relationships between safeguards' personality traits and stress coping behaviors. The findings then could provide data to adapt safeguards to their duties. For that, personality traits such as sociability, stability and stress coping behaviors and the effects were investigated. In addition, cognitive aspects which were known to influence stress coping behaviors were appraised. The findings of this research are as follows, First, regarding personality traits and stress coping behaviors, the unstable and unsocial group used the emotion-focused coping style more than the stable and social group. The two groups didn't show any significant differences in the problem-focused coping style. The A-type group used both the problem-focused style and the emotion-focused style more than the B-type group. The common characteristic of the unstable, the unsociable and the A-type groups was the heavy use of avoidance behaviors of the emotion-focused coping style. Second, In the correlation between the personal traits and the stress coping effects regarding adaptability, the stability influenced stress coping effects. Third, regarding the personality traits, the coping styles and the coping effects, A-type group showed high correlation with the sociability but not with the stability. The problem-focused coping style showed high correlation with the emotion-focused style. Fourth, the cognitive appraisal on the stress causes influenced the stress coping styles but not the stress coping effects. Fifth, the cognitive appraisal on the same stress causes didn't show any significant differences among the personality traits.
Purpose - Past research has not given much attention to the roles of consumers' social relationship type in the effects of justice type of service failure recovery alternatives on their satisfaction to the alternative exposed to them. Current research aimed at exploring the moderation role of consumers' social relationship central versus peripheral in the effects of justice types of service failure recovery alternatives on the recovery satisfaction, and this research also explored whether the level of satisfaction to interaction justice-focused alternative are significantly different between the two, their social relationship central and peripheral relationship. Research design, data, and methodology - 2(social relationship central versus peripheral) between-subjects design was employed. 50 participants for each experimental group there were. Participants of each group took forceful steps in choosing one between the procedural justice-focused alternative and the distribution justice-focused alternative. χ2-analysis was used to verify that the number of choosing each alternative becomes different between the two experimental groups, and a one way ANOVA was used to verify that the extent to which participants are satisfied to the alternative chosen by them becomes different between the two groups. Results - The number of participants choosing procedural justice-focused alternative at the group of social relationship central was larger than that at the group of social relationship peripheral, whereas the number of participants choosing distribution justice-focused alternative at the group of social relationship peripheral was larger than that at the group of social relationship central. And the level of satisfaction to procedural justice-focused alternative at the group of social relationship central was higher than that at the group of social relationship peripheral, whereas the level of satisfaction to distribution justice-focused alternative at the group of social relationship peripheral was higher than that at the group of social relationship central. In addition, the level of satisfaction to interaction justice-focused alternative was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions - Marketers should give attention to the type of justice when developing alternatives by which consumers' service failure can be recovered. They should suggest procedural justice-focused alternative to consumers under social relationship central, whereas they should develop distribution justice-focused alternative for consumers under social relationship peripheral. And in the process of recovering service failure they also should focus on interaction justice.
Focused items in English sentences are usually accompanied by changes in acoustic manifestation. This paper investigates the acoustic characteristics of $H^*$ in English utterances produced by natives speakers of English and Korean learners of English. To obtain more reliable results, the changes of the acoustic feature values (F0, intensity, syllable duration) were normalized by a median value and a whole duration of each utterance. Acoustic values of sentences with no focused words were compared with those of sentences with focused words within each group (Americans vs. Koreans). Sentences with focused words were compared between the two groups, too. In the instances in which a significant Group x Focus Location (initial, middle and final of a sentence) interaction was obtained, further analysis testing the effect of Group on each Focus Location was conducted. The analysis revealed that Korean learners of English produced focused words with lower F0, lower intensity and shorter syllable duration than native speakers of English. However, the effect of intensity change caused by focus was not significant within each group. Further analysis examining the interaction of Group and Focus Location showed that the change in F0 produced by Korean group was significantly lower in the middle and the final positions of sentences than by American group. Implications for the intonation training were also discussed.
