Surface topographical cues has been highlighted to control the fate of neural stem cells (NSCs). Herein we developed a hierarchically patterned substrate (HPS) platform for regulating NSC differentiation. The HPS induced cytoskeleton alignment and highly activated focal adhesion in hNSCs as indicated by enhanced expression of focal adhesion proteins such as focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and vinculin. hNSCs cultured on HPS exhibited enhanced neuronal differentiation compared to flat group. We also developed a graphene oxide (GO)-based hierarchically patterned substrates (GPS) that promote focal adhesion formation and neuronal differentiation of hNSCs. Enhanced focal adhesion and differentiation of hNSCs on the HPS was reversed by blocking the ${\beta}1$ integrin binding and mechanotransduction-associated signals including Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) and extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, which may suggest a potential mechanism of beneficial effects of HPS. In addition, hNSCs on the HPS differentiated into functional neurons exhibiting sodium currents and action potentials as confirmed by whole cell patch-clamping analysis. The hierarchical topography can direct differentiation of NSCs towards functional neurons, and therefore would be an important element for the design of functional biomaterials for neural tissue regeneration applications.
Using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, we analyzed the change of effective focal volume of a confocal system with light intensity. The fluorescence correlation spectroscopy system was home-built in accordance with the He-Ne laser with a wavelength of 632.8 nm, and two kinds of samples (AlexaFluor657 and Quantum dot655) suitable for the wavelength of the laser beam were used. For each sample, we analyzed and compared the correlation functions obtained while changing the intensity of the light source in a range of 1~50 ${\mu}W$. The result shows that the radius of the focal area increases linearly through the increase of particle number and diffusion time in response to an intensity change in weak light below 10 ${\mu}W$. In the higher intensity region (>10~15 ${\mu}W$), the increasing rate of particle number and diffusion time keep increasing but at a much slower rate. Through this result, it was also found that the radius increasing rate of the focal area was reduced however, the radius still increased slightly.

The common way to obtain a stereoscopic image of a subject at a distance is to place two cameras on the parallel axis rather than crossing axis. To find the IAD and maximum focal length, left and right images are obtained by varying the IAD of cameras and the focal length of the camera lens and the depth budget for the obtained images is analyzed through post production. Then, the database for IAD and focal length of the camera lens with the depth range that does not cause visual fatigue and visual discomfort are developed. These data are used to design fuzzy control and deduce the IAD and focal length of the camera lens to shoot a subject at a distance, and the function of the fuzzy control is confirmed through the actual shooting within the range of deduced IAD and focal length of the camera lens.

For effective analysis of animal ecosystems, technology that can automatically identify the current status of animal habitats is crucial. Specifically, animal sound classification, which identifies species based on their sounds, is gaining great attention where video-based discrimination is impractical. Traditional studies have relied on a single deep learning model to classify animal sounds. However, sounds collected in outdoor settings often include substantial background noise, complicating the task for a single model. In addition, data imbalance among species may lead to biased model training. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose an animal sound classification scheme that combines predictions from multiple models using Focal Loss, which adjusts penalties based on class data volume. Experiments on public datasets have demonstrated that our scheme can improve recall by up to 22.6% compared to an average of single models.
Purpose: We evaluated the incidence and malignant risk of focal breast lesions incidentally detected by $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT. Various PET/CT findings of the breast lesions were also analyzed to improve the differentiation between benign from malignant focal breast lesions. Materials & Methods: The subjects were 3,768 consecutive $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT exams performed in adult females without a history of breast cancer. A focal breast lesion was defined as a focal $^{18}F-FDG$ uptake or a focal nodular lesion on CT image irrespective of $^{18}F-FDG$ uptake in the breasts. The maximum SUV and CT pattern of focal breast lesions were evaluated, and were compared with final diagnosis. Results: The incidence of focal breast lesions on PET/CT in adult female subjects was 1.4% (58 lesions in 53 subjects). In finally confirmed 53 lesions of 48 subjects, 11 lesions of 8 subjects (20.8%) were proven to be malignant. When the PET/CT patterns suggesting benignancy (maximum attenuation value>75 HU or <30HU; standard deviation of mean attenuation > 20) were added as diagnostic criteria of PET/CT to differentiate benign from malignant breast lesions along with maximum SUV, the area under ROC curve of PET/CT was significantly increased compared with maximum SUV alone ($0.680{\pm}0.093$ vs. $0.786{\pm}0.076$, p<0.05). Conclusion: The malignant risk of focal breast lesions incidentally found on $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT is not low, deserving further diagnostic confirmation. Image interpretation considering both $^{18}F-FDG$ uptake and PET/CT pattern may be helpful to improve the differentiation from malignant and benign focal breast lesion.
Purpose: Physiologic intestinal FDG uptake is frequently observed in asymptomatic individuals for cancer screening FDG PET Colonic FDG accumulation is a well-known confusing findings that interfere true cancer detection or cause false positive. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern and intensity of colonic uptake in whole body FDG PET in asymptomatic healthy adults and to correlate them with colonoscopic findings. Materials and Methods: We reviewed retrospectively 64 subjects (age: 27-87, M:F=31:33) who underwent both FDG PET and colonoscopy for cancer screening. FDG uptake patterns were classified as focal, segmental and diffuse. Maximum SUV were measured. The PET results were compared with colonoscopic and histologic findings. Results: In 13 patients FDG bowel uptake was interpreted as focal, in 17 patients as segmental and in 34 patients as diffuse uptake. Six adenomas (17.6%, average diameter=5.0 mm) were found in diffuse pattern, 7 adenomas (41.1%, 5.6 mm) in segmental and 4 adenomas and 1 adenocarcinoma (38.5%, 16.4 mm) in focal uptake pattern. In patients with focal uptake, four were non-adenomatous pathologic lesions (30.8%, 2 intestinal tuberculosis, 2 mucosal ulcer). There is no difference of mean SUV between patients with adenoma and with negative colonoscopic results in each group of intestinal FDG pattern (Diffuse: $1.7{\pm}0.1\;vs.\;1.9{\pm}0.5$, Segmental: $4.8{\pm}3.6\;vs.\;4.2{\pm}1.2$, Focal: $6.5{\pm}4.7\;vs.\;3.5{\pm}1.3$). large adenomas (>1 cm) can be detected more in the focal uptake pattern (4 out of 5) rather than in segmental (1 out of 7) or diffuse uptake (none) and had higher SUV ($6.3{\pm}4.8$) than small adenomas ($3.5{\pm}3.0$) (statistically insignificant). Conclusion: focal FDG uptake is associated more often with large adenoma and other pathologic findings in colonoscopy. Segmental uptake cannot discriminate presence of adenoma from negative results, while diffuse pattern may have more chance to be normal.
Microscopic imaging system often requires the algorithm to adjust location of camera lenses automatically in machine level. An effort to detect the best focal point is naturally interpreted as a mathematical inverse problem [1]. Following Wiener's point of view [2], we interpret the focus level of images as the quantified factor appeared in image degradation model: g = $f{\ast}H+{\eta}$, a standard mathematical model for understanding signal or image degradation process [3]. In this paper we propose a simple, very fast and robust method to compare the degradation parameters among the multiple images given by introducing outlier analysis of histogram.

The application of focused ion beam (FIB) technology in micro/nano machining has become increasingly popular. Its usage in micro/nano machining has advantages over contemporary photolithography or other micro/nano machining technologies such as small feature resolution, the ability to process without masks and being accommodating for a variety of materials and geometries This paper focus to apply the sputtering technology accumulated by experiments to 3d structure fabrication with high resolution. Therefore some verifications and discussions of the characteristics of FIB sputtering results according to focal length were described in this paper. And we suggested the definition of rectangular pattern profile and made the verifications of sputtering results based on definition of it.
In the present study, we performed the velocity field measurement in a microchannel using a focal length variable micro liquid lens. The liquid lens is used as a beam expander in a micro-PIV system to acquire the scatter image of the seeded particle. A thin film-type micro liquid lens was made of PDMS material and it was attached on top of the 700-micron-wide working fluid supply channel trench. As a result, the focal length and contact angle of the liquid lens changed with variations in applied pressure.

It is quite complex to draw the geometry of electron trajectories in electron optics because such trajectories have various aberrations that cannot be easily calculated. However, if we need to know roughly the geometry, the focal length and the principal planes in order to understand the properties of column, a simple numerical solution can be a useful method. We are developing the electron beam machining system based on SEM. In this paper, we show rough geometry, focal length and principal planes by a numerical solution for electron lens I in our column. These results will be utilized in developing a simulation program for electron optics.
