In this study, the effect of polyol structure(OH-value, functionality) on the reactivity, mechanical property and cell morphology of polyurethane foam and the possibility of replacing HFC-36smfc was examined by evaluating how each blowing agent(CFC-11, HCFC-l4lb, HFC-36smfc) affects the reactivity, mechanical property and cell morphology. Results of the experiment showed that as the functionality and OH-value of polyol increased, there was an increase in the temperature profile, reaction rate, density and compressive strength. However. as the functionality and OH-value increased. the ceil size became smaller The use of different kinds of blowing agents did not appear to have and significant influence on the temperature profile, reaction rate, density and compressive strength. The foam using HFC-365mfc produced more uniform cells compared to the foam using HCFC-l4lb.
Nickel-based and iron-based alloys have been developed and commercialized for a wide range of high performance applications at severely corrosive and high temperature environment. This alloy foam has an outstanding performance which is predestinated for diesel particulate filters, heat exchangers, and catalyst support, noise absorbers, battery, fuel cell, and flame distributers in burners in chemical and automotive industry. Production of alloy foam starts from high-tech coating technology and heat treatment of transient liquid-phase sintering in the high temperature. These technology allow for preparation of a wide variety of foam compositions such as Ni, Cr, Al, Fe on various pore size of pure nickel foam or iron foam in order for tailoring material properties to a specific application.

A production of $\beta-Carotene$was attempted in a fed-batch culture of Blakeslea trispora by controlling both foam and dissolved oxygen in the presence of surfactant, Span 20. Results obtained from the shake flask cultures indicated that a high concentration of dissolved oxygen was needed for both cell growth and $\beta-Carotene$ synthesis, and the optimal concentration of glucose was found to be in the range of 50-100 g/l. In order to maintain the dissolved oxygen concentration level at higher than 50% of air saturation, pure oxygen was automatically sparged into the medium with air. Foam was controlled by bypassing air from the submerged aeration to the headspace in response to the foam that was caused by Span 20. High agitation speed was found to be detrimental to the cell growth due to shear damage, even though it provided sufficient dissolved oxygen. On the other hand, a low aeration speed caused stagnant regions in the fermentor because of improper mixing. Thus, for the fed-batch operation, agitation speed was increased gradually from 300 to 700 rpm to prevent cell damage at the initial stage of fermentation and to give efficient mixing for a viscous culture broth as the culture proceeded. By controlling dissolved oxygen and foam, a high concentration of $\beta-Carotene$otene (1,190 mg/l) was obtained in 6 days of the fed-batch culture of B. trispora with 2.5% of the dry cell weight, which was approximately 5 times higher than that of the batch cultures.
For the preparation of high resilience polyurethane (PU) foams with polyether type cell openers which have different ethylene oxide (EO) content, molecular weight and chain structure, the influences of tell opener structure on the kinetics, rheology, structural stability, open cell content and mechanical properties of the obtained foam were investigated. It was observed that urea formation reaction was delayed with the increase of EO content and incorporation of ester linkage in cell opener molecule and was relatively independent on the molecular weight. With the rheological studies, the decreases of viscosity and storage modulus were confirmed for the increase of EO content and molecular weight, so that the resulted foam had low structural stability and high open cell content. The cell opener having ester linkage in molecule exhibited the lowest values of viscosity and storage modulus and the obtained foam has high open cell content. However, the structural stability increased due to the larger intermolecular interaction of ester linkage. The hardness, tensile strength, tear strength and elongation of foam were deteriorated with increase of EO content and molecular weight of tell opener. On the other hand, the cell opener having ester linkage in molecule improved the values of tensile strength, tear strength and elongation.
Aluminum foams sandwich panel (AFSP) has been used in engineering field, where cyclic loading is used in most of the applications. In this paper, the fatigue life of AFSP prepared by the bonding method was investigated through a three-point bending test. The mathematical statistics method was used to analyze the influence of different plate thicknesses and core densities on the bending fatigue life. The macroscopic fatigue failure modes and damage mechanisms were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that panel thickness and core layer density have a significant influence on the bending fatigue life of AFSP and their dispersion. The damage mechanism of fatigue failure to cells in aluminum foam is that the initial fatigue crack begins the cell wall, the thinnest position of the cell wall or the intersection of the cell wall and the cell ridge, where stress concentrations are more likely to occur. The fatigue failure of aluminum foam core usually starts from the semi-closed unit of the lower layer, and the fatigue crack propagates layer by layer along the direction of the maximum shear stress. The results can provide a reference for the practical engineering design and application of AFSP.

A Kelvin foam plate - widely used in the energy and transport industries as a lightweight structural material - was examined to estimate its Young's modulus using ultrasound. An isotropic tetrakaidecahedron foam structure was designed in SolidWorks and printed using 3D printer with an ABS plastic material. The 3D printed foam structure was used to build a foam plate with a 14 mm thickness ($50mm{\times}100mm$ in size) for the ultrasonic test. The Kelvin foam plate, a significantly porous medium, was completely filled with paraffin wax to enable the ultrasound to penetrate through the porous medium. The acoustic wave velocity of the wax-filled Kelvin foam was measured using the time of flight (TOF) method. Furthermore, the elastic modulus of the Kelvin foam was estimated based on an elastic structural model developed in this study. The Young's modulus of the produced Kelvin foam was observed to be approximately 3.4% of the bulk value of the constituent material (ABS plastic). This finding is consistent with experimental and theoretical results reported by previous studies.

A proprietary device is adopted to break out the membrane of cell in the rigid polyurethane foam. As it is known, the membrane of cell is hardly tearing-off thoroughly in a mechanical way due to both its elastic characteristic and micro sized pores. In this study, a novel experimental approach is introduced to burst out all gases inside the cells of the rigid polyurethane foam by abrasively grinding micro-cells completely into fine powder. The biggest advantage of this approach is to be capable of releasing all gases out from the cell even in the micro pores. As clearly reflected from the repeatability, the accuracy of the result is highly improved and high confidence in the data sets as well. For the measurements of not only gas composition but partial pressure for each gas simultaneously as well, a precision gas mass spectrometer is used in-line directly to the abrasive grinding device. To control the starting point of the polyurethane foam, all samples were prepared on site in the laboratory. Manufactured time is one of the most critical factors in characterization of cell gas composition because it is known that one of gas composition, especially, carbon dioxide, is diffused out dramatically in a short period of time as soon as it is foamed.
The polyol was synthesized from soybean oil. Soybean oil was epoxized with peracetic acid, and was reacted with methanol in a sulfuric acid catalyst. OH value of synthesized polyol was 186(mg KOH/g). The polyurethane foam was synthesized with silicon type B-8409 as a surfactant, distilled water as a blowing agent, dimethylcyclohexylamine as a catalyst, and polymeric MDI. The density, the compressive strength, the compressive modulus, and the cell structure of the synthesized foam were investigated. The foam was prepared with changing the mole ratio of MDI, and the amount of water, surfactant, and catalyst. As the MDI index was increased, the density and the compressive property of the foam were increased.

It is important to uniformly supply the fuel gas into the reaction activity area in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Recent studies have shown that the cell performance can be significantly improved by employing metal foam gas distributor as compared with the conventional bipolar plate types. The metal foam gas distributor has been reported to be more efficient to fuel transport. In this study, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed to examine the effects of metal foam flow field design on the fuel supply to the reaction site. Darcy's law is used for the flow in the porous media. By solving additional advection equation for fluid particle trajectory, the gas transport has been visualized and examined for various geometrical configuration of metal foam gas distributor.
