  • This paper deals with dynamic instability of slender rocket-propelled flying bodies, such as launch vehicle and advances missiles subjected to aerodynamic loads and an end rocket thrust. A flying body is simplified into a uniform free-free beam subjected to an end follower thrust. Two types of aerodynamic loads are assumed in the stability analysis. Firstly, it is assumed that two concentrated aerodynamic loads act on the flying body at its nose and tail. Secondly, to take account of effect of unsteady flow due to motion of a flexible flying body, aerodynamic load is estimated by the slender body approximation. Extended Hamilton's principle is applied to the considered beam for deriving the equation of motion. Application of FEM yields standardeigen-value problem. Dynamic stability of the beam is determined by the sign of the real part of the complex eigen-values. If aerodynamic loads are concentrated loads that act on the flying body at its nose and tail, the flutter thrust decreases by about 10% in comparison with the flutter thrust of free-free beam subjected only to an end follower thrust. If aerodynamic loads are distributed along the longitudinal axis of the flying body, the flutter thrust decreases by about 70% in comparison with the flutter thrust of free-free beam under an end follower thrust. It is found that the flutter thrust is reduced considerably if the aerodynamic loads are taken into account in addition to an end rocket thrust in the stability analysis of slender rocket-propelled flying bodies.

  • This paper presents an approach to optimally design the air-bearing surface (ABS) of the optical flying head for near-field recording technology (NFR). NFR is an optical recording technology using very small beam spot size by overcoming the limit of beam diffraction. One of the most Important problems in NFR is a head disk interface (HDI) issue over the recording band during the operation. A multi-criteria optimization problem is formulated to enhance the flying performances over the entire recording band during the steady state. The optimal solution of the slider, whose target flying height is 50 nm, is automatically obtained. The flying height during the steady state operation becomes closer to the target values than those fur the initial one. The pitch and roll angles are also kept within suitable ranges over the recording band. Especially, all of the air-bearing stiffness are drastically increased by the optimized geometry of the air bearing surface.

  • Dynamic stability of a flying structure undertaking constant and pulsating axial forces is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of the structure, which is idealized as a free-free beam, are derived by using the hybrid variable method and the assumed mode method. The structural system includes a directional control unit to obtain the directional stability. The analysis model presented in this paper considers the nonlinear effect due to rigid body motion of the beam. Dynamic stability of the system is influenced by the nonlinear effect. In order to examine the nonlinear effect, first the unstable regions of the linear system are obtained by using the method based upon Floquet's theory, and dynamic responses of the nonlinear system in the unstable region are obtained by using direct time integration method. Dynamic stability of the nonlinear system is determined by the obtained dynamic responses.

  • Magnetron and Ion beam sputtering were used to texture the air-bearing surface of magnetic recording sliders. Flying height measurements and Laser-Doppler interferometry were used to compare the 'flyability' of textured and untextured sliders. Lubricant redistribution on the disk surface caused by slider/disk interactions was investigated using scanning ellipsometry (Surface Reflectance Analyzer (SRA)). The results show that slider surface texture causes only small changes in the flying height of sliders but reduces slider in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations. Textured sliders were found to cause less lubricant depletion on the disk surface than untextured sliders.

The equations of motion of the structure, which is idealized as a free-free beam, are derived by using the hybrid variable method and the assumed mode method. The structural system includes a directional control unit to obtain the directional stability. Unstable regions due to periodically pulsating thrust forces are obtained by using the Floquet's theory. Stability diagrams are presented to illustrate the influence of the constant force, the location of gimbal, and the frequency of pulsating force. The validity of the diagrams are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the dynamic system.

  • The investigation to evaluate the possible effects of fish behaviour on acoustic target strength was carried out during the 1997 and 1998 hydroacoustic-demersal trawl surveys in the southern waters of Korea. The swimming speed and the target strength of individual, acoustically resolved fished swimming through the sound beam were measured using the split-beam tracking method on board R/V Kaya. The results obtained can be summarized as follows:1. The alongship and athwartship angles between -3dB poionts of a hull mounted 38 kHz split beam tranducer used in these surveys was >$3.76^{\circ}\;and\;6.74^{\circ}$ respectively, and the equal energy contour obtained from the measured beam pattern showed approximately the circular pattern. 2. The swimming speed measured off the south coast of Sorido in 23 January 1997 ranged 0.10 to 0.80 m/s with the average swimming spped of 0.36 m/s, and the target strength ranged -64.8 to -31.7 dB with the average target strength of -52.7 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Japanese scaled sardine, Sardinella zunasi and Konoshiro gizzard shad, Konosirus punctatus, respectively.3. The swimming speed measured off the east coast of Kojedo in 24 March 1997 ranged 0.10 to 1.10 m/s with the average swimming speed of 0.40 m/s, and the target strength ranged -64.8 to -51.5 dB with the average target strength of -59.2 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Swordtip squid, Photololigo edulis, Konoshiro gizzard shad and Japanese flying squid, Toddarodes pacificus, respectively and the swimming activity of these species seems to be controlled at speeds between 0.20 and 0.60 m/s. 4. The swimming speed measured the south coast of Kojedo in 25 March 1997 ranged 0.10 to 1.40 m/s with the average swimming speed of 0.51 m/s and the target strength ranged -64.3 to -47.7 dB with the average target strength of -55.1 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Swordtip squid, Blotchy sillage, Sillago maculata and japanese scaled sardine, respectively and the swimming activity of these species seems to be controlled at speeds between 0.20 and 0.70 m/s.5. The swimming speed measured during morning twilight in the southeastern water of Cheju Island in 11 July 1998 ranged 0.20 to 1.0 m/s with the average swimming speed of 0.53 m/s, and the target strength ranged -65.0 to -47.0 dB with the average target strength of -57.1 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Swordtip squid, Black scraper, Thamnaconus modesutus and japanese flying squid, respectively and the tile angle ranged$ +28^{\circ}\;to\;+2^{\circ}$ with the average tilt angle of -8.1$^{\circ}$ showing the downward migration.

  • Flexible behaviors in new aerospace structures can lead to a degradation of their control and guidance system and undesired performance. The objectives of the current work are to analyze the vibration resulting from the propulsion force on a Single Stage to Orbit (SSTO) launch vehicle (LV). This is modeled as a follower force on a free-free Euler-Bernoulli beam consisting of two concentrated masses at the two free ends. Once the effects on the oscillation of the actuators are studied, a solution to reduce these oscillations will also be developed. To pursue this goal, the stability of the beam model is studied using Ritz method. It is determined that the transverse and rotary inertia of the concentrated masses cause a change in the critical follower force. A new dynamic model and an adaptive control system for an SSTO LV have been developed that allow the aerospace structure to run on its maximum bearable propulsion force with the optimum effects on the oscillation of its actuators. Simulation results show that such a control model provides an effective way to reduce the undesirable oscillations of the actuators.

  • A few characteristics of membrane structures which the author thinks important for design are described on the basis of his experience in research and design of this kind of structures. Different in behaviors of air-supported and air-inflated structures are first explained for a better understanding of these structures. Attention is drawn to unfavorable behaviors of an air-beam when it is reinforced by diagonal members. The shallowest membrane structure which can be made as an airdome is pursued, and its application to a metal membrane dome is shown. Attempts which have been made by the author seeking for the possibility of membrane structures made of metal sheet, plastic film with and without reinforcement are described with realized examples. A 100m long jumbo carp is explained as an example of a flying membrane.
